 A following? Not me Kimbo.

If you play good dance tunes to the friendly, up for it, crowd at the Cracker - you can't go wrong really.

See you at the Xoo Bar.

Blimey what a hornets nest. I dont know i go to work, come home and Soul Source has turned into civil war.

Firstly WELL DONE HELEN.

I say this because invariably people dont like to leave negative feedback regarding an event and i dare say the best policy is like Thumpers mum said " If you cant say something nice, then dont say anything at all" Helen PMd me and told me her feelings regarding "Duffy". I then PMd Helen back, and we settled it. Helen wasnt going to post, but considering the fact that Helen has attended the Cracker every time since she came in the first place to see Moldie and Chris. I am GLAD that she put up her post, as i value hers and the opinion of anyone who takes the time and trouble to attend and there are enough people who have voiced their opinions on the Cream Cracker that hadn't even been.

The Cream Cracker is not for DJ's egos or to try to impress other DJ's promotors etc, i would just like it to remain for the reason i set it up in the first place. For a cheap night, with cheap beer etc, that plays the tunes we all know and love and is the reason we do this week in week out, and to dance and hear tunes that make our hair stand on end and make us want to lose ourselves for 5 1/2 hours where bugger all matters in the world except the tunes (whichever genre they are, but oldies at the Cracker) and all go home at 1am ish totally soaked in sweat and CREAM CRACKERED, while we still have the ability to enjoy tunes, that admittedly have been discovered by someone else, and blimey am i thankfull to them.

When Mellers played at the Cream Cracker he would play Niles Berkley (?) and it would set my pressure gauge off. I dont like to do modern, whichever it is, or rare, failed disco B sides or tunes that wouldnt be out of place being played in a gay nightclub in New York in the 70's. As Bryn has stated already there are thousands of BRILLIANT tunes (tried and tested admittedly) that need to be and can be played.

I advertise the Cream Cracker as a venue that plays, Classic Northern, RnB and Early Crossover. Trev and John McDade DJ'd for me on Saturday evening and both of them are well into the modern scene. However they know the kind of stuff we play at the Cracker and they catered accordingly. I also say to the DJ's if you are approached by anyone who asks you for a specific tune, and you have it please try to include it in your set if you have time etc... As I frikin well hate it when i ask a DJ for a tune and he looks at me like i'm a Twat, its not as if i've asked for Freda Payne or Robert Knight.

In Johns defence he was asked a few times for the Duffy track, so in his own judgement (he was the DJ at the time) he played the tune, at the end of his set. Admittedly it filled the floor

The tune IMHO has no place at an oldies night and i personally think it is a fad that will expire in the not too distant future, however it has been played at numerous events and it has had a mixed reaction. The tune is a good one and i have had first hand experience that the tune and video is bringing our scene to the attention of the younger public(which we may or may not want).

EXAMPLE On a job yesterday, and playing a cd i'd put together. Young girl, about 17 says whats this music its quite good, i looked over at her thinking initially GOOD!!! then i said Northern Soul. To which she replied whats that. I tried to explain and she looked bored and bumused, i have that effect on women, just ask Karen. I then said have you seen the Duffy video, to which she said yes its brilliant and the dancing is SO cool.

The Cream Cracker is an oldies night and perceived by some to be a same old same event, which isnt strictly true, buts thats NOT the issue here.. I do ask DJ's to play who have the same tastes in the music that we cater for, but sometimes a tune will slip through that will cause controvasy.

Thankyou for your initial post Helen and what i wrote in the PM stands 100%.

With Regards

Kev and Karen

hi kev & karen

A top night had by all !.... just to say thanks again for letting me have a spin and for the great review! i must admit was a tad nervous bein a beginner but thoroughly enjoyed it and have got the bug !

was pleased when some chap ran up after i played THE CAPITOLS" got to handle it" to ask who it was as its a great tune not often played and LITTLE RICHARD "dont wanna discuss it " went down well .. was very surprised at all the positive feedback afterwards .... loved all the other sets but bein honest seemed alot more 70s played than previously in november but hey im a purist 60s guy really ....

Special thanks to marky mole (the master i am but a humble apprentice) and netty for the lift, tunes and beer !

I feel the cracker will gain momentum with word of mouth as a "quality" soul night and cant wait to get on the decks again !

KTF

cheers all

Saying that the Cracker is a good nite out n worth a vist for sure

Great Crowd, lovely floor, Kid Mohair did a great set there at Christmas along with the dynamic duo (Chris n Moldie) and Kevkent was superb on Sat So they get great guests in too usually....And Kev fills the floor right to the end of the night.
