I didn't win the 45, so I never got chance to try it out......

What do you think? Should we all get together and shun paypal? Give this our business? I've only had a glance at the details, but it seems much cheaper than the 4% that paypal are charging.....

PayPal's been OK for me, it's Ebay that have screwed me up!

You didn't get the following E-mail from Ebay ? One way of putting their fees up, by forcing you to accept Paypal. I have always insisted on other payment methods for items over £50.00. Paypal is too open to abuse and is stacked in favour of the buyers. How many sellers get ripped off every day ?

In March we announced that we'll require all sellers on eBay.co.uk to offer PayPal as a payment method on their listings. We can now confirm that the requirement will take effect on 3rd June 2008. We're making this change as buyers are more confident and likely to buy on eBay, and sellers more likely to see their listings convert into sales, when PayPal is offered as a payment method. It also means we can provide protection to buyers should things go wrong. Currently, over 95% of listings on the site already offer PayPal.

As a seller I would be worried that my ebay auctions would not attract as many bids.

And how about their sellers protection? I just lost $74 to a paypal fraudster in Spain. I could supply proof of shipment but not that he received it as it was not registrated so it didn't matter. Nor did it matter that he opened the dispute 7 days after payment sent when it's two weeks shipping time between the US and Spain and that he has a background of paypal disputes. I was on the phone with them today and they could not even tell how many % of his transactions lifted to disputes before his account is being reviewed...what a service and what beautiful policy.

Paypal's fees are not much different to any merchant service that allows you to accept money by credit card.

When I used to sell using my own website, some shopping cart software and a merchant service (worldpay) I used to get charged a monthly fee as well as the fees, it was hardly worth it but I used the site as a demonstration site for selling the shopping cart software so I put up with it.

I got defrauded whilst using that too, someone in the Philipines used an American's credit card to purchase 10 cd's from my site which I sent as all I saw was the payment into my bank account. About a month later Worldpay just had the money back. Luckily about 3 months later the CD's turned up undelivered.

It must be hard for Paypal to decide who is the fraudster- seller or buyer, and they do provide fairly detailed guidelines. I don't doubt that they are not always diligent though.

I actually like the service but I'm not too happy with eBay owning it, I'd rather use an independent service if there was one.

From now on if I sell anything on ebay & using paypal as a method of payment I send them all recorded delivery by second class to shave a few pence off. Overseas I've always sent registered etc since been ripped off by a German or swiss guy for an Inell Young 45. Frustrating but they have you by the balls at times.

I DON'T SEE HOW THEY NEED IT BETWEEN TWO BRITISH BANKS.

I RECEIVED £6.49 FOR A RECORD THE FEE WAS 42p THE CONVERSION FEE WAS ANOTHER 30p I ENDED UP WITH £5.77, IF YOU SELL A LOT OF RECORDS IT MOUNTS UP DOSEN'T IT,

IT'S NOT MENTIONED ANYWHERE ON PAYMENT DETAILS EITHER,

ALL PART OF LIVING IN RIP-OFF BRITON I GUESS.

On the subject of Ebay, Paypal and fees, the amount that ebay take off you is just f*cking phenomenal, I sold that Bari Track for £625, out of that it had cost almost £4 to list it (bold, subtitle included) then they took £55.76 as a fee for selling it, and of course paypal charged £21.45, so Ebays cut was £80

it makes me laugh when they came out with the statement that what people wanted was INSERTION FEES reduces, no we didn't, it was final value fees...and then they went and added anohter 3% or something to the final value fees.

Is there still no alternative?

That's 13% all in all. If you had recieved the payment outside of PayPal, eBay's cut would've been 9%. That's not very much in my opinion considering the exposure and service that eBay provides.

I know other websites and dealers that sell rare soul 45s on behalf of others who charge more. There aren't too many comments about that on here though.

Yeah I charge more - I charge 15%. But I do all the work. What do ebay do apart from let me post it on their site?

Don't think thats gonna work for much longer because now that sellers cannot leave negative, the buyer will just leave a negative because of the postage

Well seeing that Ebay brought Paypal a while ago it is unsuprising that accepting Paypal is going to be one of their terms and conditions.

Paypal's terms are always open to exploitation, however as said before, if a tracked service is used then there is usualy no problems, at least your item is insured.

Though for low priced items not always an option as you would never get any bids.

Inregards to Paypal & ebay fees, not sticking up for them as remember the days of 5% going down after £30 and onwards.

Try using an international Auction House, Sothebys for example, 15% plus 17.% VAT so in comparison their fees are still cheap seeing that they are hosting an international Auction site.

What I Did find suprising was the Paypal invest Account holders Funds in the Stock Market however provide no source of interest rates for people who hold funds in their accounts. I sell bit's and bobs on the bay and use my Paypal account to fund my record purchases so sometimes I can have a bit of cash knocking about in my account, lets hope we don't have a stock market crash.

I've put up my first set of sales since the new policies have been introduced - & no it's not NS related, just some old magazines that may be worth a couple of bob. I'm hesitent due to the extra fees with it all being paypal, plus the possibility of these fraudsters. Over 2+ years I've been involved in buying & selling, I have had no dramas...mind you, I always post vinyl registered. After this set of auctions I will decide if I'll bother again as I don't wanna be f*****g ripped for 13% of the total sale - sheesh. Espicially if you're getting into sales reaching $100's. I'm keen to see how it goes & will report my outcomes.

you may be OK re the final fees

only certain categories have the 9% final value fee... so it would depend where you list it.

also if you list records on ebay.com, then the FVF is lower than 9%... or have I dreamt that?

I'm actually over both of them, from both fronts, recently sold a record to a guy in the states, he paid the wrong amount, didn't reply to my e-mails, I refunded his original payment, re-invoiced he then paid that, then has been hassling me about delivery, I sent it 5 days prior to his 1st enquiry, he then threatened to 'go to ebay' with a complaint....I on the other hand I have bought some scooter parts from a guy in France who tells me it was shipped on the 28th April, he gave me a consignment number with the French postal service but when I put in the number it says that it doesn't exist, I've e-mailed him several times with no response....gonna give it another week.

Regaining monies from sellers only works if they have money in their account....as for the 'new' feedback where sellers can't give feedback, it's just bollocks....from both sides of the coin there are good & bad sellers/buyers....feedback is a very important way of gauging the possibility that the other person is a fraud.

Touch wood, but I've never had any problems with Paypal or Ebay. If people don't like the fees why not just set up your own web sites to sell stuff, sure you get free web space with most ISP's. Or failing that what about Martin Thomsons site, he offers free listings.
