Thanks to Grapevine have got a decent clip of this unissued track from Labeat master tape!

Heard Keith Money playing last week it at the most excellent just gone Dublin event and have to say it pricked up me ears, and after playing this clip a few more times, it certainly does take on the form of a "gets even better with each hear" killer track

Believe 4 djs playing this track out and about, Keith Money , Ady C and... two more (ack the other two names have gone spongy at moment will add once 100% sure right)

Seems its due to be released in future along with other unissued tracks on a forthcoming Labeat CD, so keep a eye on the Grapevine website and of course on here for info on that release

Mike...just how good is this?, who says that the days of finding stuff like this are long gone?..magical!!

It has qualities but it certainly is not "awesome", nor is it a "killer" IMO. It is OK, not that much more, and those girlie vocals almost spoil it. It's not exactly on par with "I Am Nothing", now is it?

I Am Nothing is a fantastic record but if you listen to it 'critically' you'll hear that the guy is about on a par with Danny Somebody New Moore when it comes to vocals

Sounds like a throwaway B side and he's a bad vocalist.

Wow, I don't see why anybody would be critical of this. This and "I am Nothing" make the hairs on my neck stand up. I'll be first in line when this gets a 45 release(but I won't DJ it out, wouldn't be proper)

And why is that?, would you not want your punters to enjoy and perhaps the only chance to dance to unless the dj's with the original acetates were on?, daft really depriving punters of a chance to dance to this great discovery, i'm sure the owner of the original would'nt mind, i'll be playing it anyway.

i agree most punters go to hear the music and dance (and social side) but many don't care what label djs play.

I totally agree, he sings with soul (i.e. he conveys emotion through his voice) but it is pretty obvious that he is a technically 'limited' vocalist, to put it nicely. "I Am Nothing" is a magic sound and is all about atmosphere IMO. I was told the flip was good but I was very disappointed when I heard it, it was not much to write home about I think.

Yes, exactly, "I Am Nothing" is really good whilst this unissued tune is pretty OK, it's nice, but it doesn't really stand a comparison with "I Am Nothing". It's better than some other things though and since you are not supposed to judge new discoveries by the criteria used for established tunes (apparently), I guess it's pretty good.

i'd judge them by whatever criteria you want...who has the right to tell you otherwise?

i agree that 'i am nothing' is a superior song but maybe it suffers from having been heard for so many years

i agree also that he sounds a bit limited on this but to be fair if it's pure technical proficiency we're after we might as well listen to pavarotti

there's something about this track which really gets me: it's like terminator soul...once that beat starts up it absolutely will not stop

Having heard this played out for the first time at the weekend - have to say it sounded top notch. A thumbs up from me

PS. Pete - when you think of a fish, do you just think of a mouth that opens and closes with nowt but bubbles coming out of it Reckon I'm in for a playful punch when JoT reads this

Re - acetates and tape etc

As for tracks like Al Williams - it's not really 'cricket' for DJs to suggest they should decide if they can play them or not. Soul etiquette (stop laughing at the back) would suggest that the person who finds the tape source should have first say on who gets copies and plays them out. If they decide to release it / license it etc then obviously that's a different matter. It's a decent track but will soon become played out if every man and his dog start playing it.

I know the above probably sounds a bit eccentric and edge warped but this is the northern scene - and it's meant to be that way.

This 'oh but the punters should decide' is the biggest red herring around. That line is normally spun by DJs - not punters - in any case.

No Dj has got an original acetate, they are all cuts/emi-discs done from the re-mastered tapes are they not! So in reality no different to getting a cut done from the cd when it's out

I'm sure most CD reissue companies would agree with that. Especially as there were no original acetates. There might be a proviso or two if there were an original acetate but that's a whole new subject.

Is Al Williams of La Beat fame the same vocalist who recorded "The Other Side Of Your Love" on Crajon with Denise LaSalle / Gene Miller in the early 1970s? The vocal on that record is superb.
