This is a tough choice because there have been some awesome previously unissued gems played over the last 30 years or so, I was thinking about "Suspicion", "Some day the sun will shine" and second best of all "The magic touch"...but the best of the lot has to be one of the first wave of unissued things Popcorn Wylie gave to John Anderson:

BETTY BOO - SAY IT ISN'T SO

what a f*cking record, never fully appreciated at the time and released to early. An absolute gem.

Inspirations - Gotta Find A New Love

Ben E King - Gettin' To Me.

Like the JJ Barnes "Everybody Needs Somebody" Motown acetate - anyone got a soundfile of this?

link

Just put it up in sounds

This has been mentioned here before but well worth a listen, different version of Porgy & The Monarchs

The Martha Jean Love cover-up is a fantastic record, that would have been a massive sound at any point in the scene's history.

Don't think I've heard that. I haven't heard half of the tracks people have mentioned, shame a few more clips couldn't have gone up

JJ Barnes was ok - nothing special, certainly not one of the best unissued Motown's; Wee Willie Walker was playing at 78 for some reason; Sy Hytower lasted 10 seconds before I turned it off and I got bored of Art Gentry after about 25 seconds.

So you were right as always!

Pete, have you got a full soundfile of Eddie Holland "Daydreamer" that you could post up? It would be very much appreciated.

Just been listening to Eddie Holman's "Hold Me In Your Arms" on Grapevine again, and I have to say what a simply amazing record this is. I've never really thoroughly listened to the lyrics before, and they really make the record a masterpiece of regret and understated emotion. I'm guessing the reason it was never released at the time is that at over three minutes long it was deemed too long to be a single.

Shame that it was dropped from allnighter playlists as soon as it was released on Grapevine. Before it came out it seemed you couldn't avoid it: it was played about ten times at Cleethorpes 2003. Oh well...

enclosed is a sample of the version I had years ago which ...... THE VOLCANOS

Here you go..

Many thanks Pete. God, I love this record. Early Motown just has a mystique that much of the later material lacks.

This might be an unreleased demo version of Needless To Say by Bernard Williams though I have it listed as Tears Tell The Whole Sad Story

link

I've another demo without the horns somewhere. Also a version by the Tropics.

I really like Little Anne "Who Are You Trying To Fool".

Billy Garner "Brand New Girl" is also rather impressive, if you like to feel like you've been kicked in the bollocks when you're dancing.

The "Follow The Wind" acetates are awesome. It was pressed six times, each one with a different mix, the above soundfile is not regarded as the best one though. In fact the vocal on that one is rather weak. I'll see if I can sort out a file of the best one.

Yeah, it is a bit like that. A 'few' years before that though.

It was..had this on tape, slowed it back down when I put it on the PC and identical...we/ce discussed and compared on here before.

link

Always thought that the very ending - the fade out - vocals are very slightly different Chalky. Have it on an old tape from RS on Hallam. Will dig it out for a listen.

Might be the memory going but I thought they were two separate takes

There's summat like 9 takes altogether, hoping Ady might have read this to say summat. I'll give Gilly a call if not.

We did discuss this somewhere on site before so all the info should be there.

Perhaps not a good idea to post the Liitle Eva version up here, the Colletta Woodson version does kick arse though, but I guess you'll have to trust me on it. :)

I know the general attitude to it nowadays, but has anyone mentioned Frank "Bloody" Wilson yet.

In all seriousness, I don't think a lot of us understand these funky sounds - I don't anyway.

Loads of good stuff on this thread but i'm surprised no ones mentioned Candle In My Window, wasn't that unissued? Both sides good as well. I liked Ronnie Walker's more sober sounding version of Trouble that came out a while back too and whilst it's not necessarily the best unissued Motown track, I love the instrumental break in I've Got To Get Away by Tommy Good.

I agree with Gareth, Eddie Holman "Hold Me In Your Arms" is great and must be one of the best unissued northern soul tracks ever, a bit monotonous but stilll brilliant. I rarely think unissued tracks are as good as the best stuff that actually was issued but there are some superb tunes.

Moses Smith "Try My Love" superb northern. Weak vocal effort IMO but with a backing this good it doesn't matter too much!

Nelson Sanders "It's Real" great mid-tempo Detroit

Metros "What's Wrong With Your Love" the version with horns is great, the other version not as good IMO.

All versions of Jesse James "Love Is Alright" are very good IMO. Butch's version sounds like the one that came out on CD as well as on Soul City. Doesn't Kenny Burrell have the other version, with organ and alternate vocal take? I actually prefer the version with organ instead of strings, sounds very special out loud. The instrumental is also good.

Thats the one I sent up.

Agree with you John, Carla Thomas "I'll Never Stop..." is a very special record indeed. Couldn't believe it when I first heard it, a comment which applies to a lot of the unissued stuff like Lorraine Chandler, John Edwards, Peggy Gaines, Maxine Brown, Johnnie Taylor, TKOs etc. that got their first airing at the 100 Club.

I actually think we're quite spoilt these days in that there's a wealth of great stuff that wasn't available to deejays 'back in the day.' It's always interesting to speculate how big some of these records might have been at the major venues of yesteryear: imagine a packed Casino hearing "You Only Live Twice" for the first time: a spine-tingling prospect.

Well I keep reading through this to think of a title and find somebodys covered it, my top 3 are mentioned Betty Boo, proper Northern Soul, loved it from first time, Chuck Jackson WWTL, spine tingling and reminder of great days, but tops for me is the oft mentioned Diane Lewis, possibly in my all time top few records of anysort!!

One that would have made as No 1 for me was Searlings Charletta Lies, unissued Sussex record I thought, but believe it was found to be issued, anyone confirm?

Grapevine have been throwing some nice unissued stuff lately (assume it still counts if cd only) the Anita Robbins track off the recent Most Wanted cd I think would sound great out although it is a bot left field vocally, and the Syl Johnson track of either Sound/ Talk of The Grapevine would sound great on one of those camping weekends John and Alison seem to love.

Oops just remembered another worthy of mention, Popcorn Wylies Hanky Panky, superb dance music,

Cheers

Jock

No, but that's probably because it was released as a demo  :wicked:

Might be splitting hairs a bit, but if the stories you hear are true it was more likely stolen as a demo after the rest were destroyed. Whatever the stories are, it still wasn't officially released until the UK issues in 79. I know that it goes aginst the general concensus in the "scene" nowadays but no matter how over hyped, over played and over here it is, in my opinion it is still a bloody good track.

and you are entitled to that opinion, personally i grew tired of it very quickly at Wigan and it's never really been a favourite for me sorry.

Dunno, kind of wah-wah synth noise sounds like it's been added on years later

i think you'll find they're steel drums

Anyone know when it will show the light of day anywhere? Ady reckons it will appear on a Kent comp.... eventually.

I hope so...... the girlfriend is going mad to get hold of a copy!

:wicked:

kin ell Pete..tough question as there's so many....

Diane Lewis - You Ain't Got A Chance must be up there.

Kae Williams - Our Love Is Dying top tune too  :wicked:

Suspicion must rate as one of the best unissued Motown along with Temptations - C'mon  Back To Me Baby.
