one of the best clubs ever for me

colin curtis playing jazz in the downstairs room at the far end (warren boogaloo on the dance floor givin it some fancy jazz moves - eh warren?)

main room not to my taste - too oldies oriented - except for the odd guest spot

but upstairs in the modern room was just fantastic (really, it was the sam and arthur show)

best memories:

richard searling charging in with a face like a smacked arse and accosting sam cos the week before cos we had persuaded sam to uncover a few top sounds of the time (can't remember them all now - remember daybreak was one) and after he had played his set downstairs someone showed him a fanzine we had knocked up in a hurry giving the real artists/titles/labels which included about four records he had just played as c/u's spose it did make him look a bit silly in retrospect

the "pajama party" (i remember sam dj-ing in pajamas that belonged to arthur which he had "comandeered" when he stayed over shortly before )

colin curtis coming up one night and telling me that he didn't think that the music was any different from what he played at the mecca (yeah, right )

but most of all - excellent new records everytime, great venue, and a brilliant friendly crowd

He resurfaced last year and sold his collection via flyers left out at the 100 Club...I know Mick Smith had a lot of them.

How long did the Locarno go on for then, I stopped going in 1979 because they switched it to the Top Of The World, Stafford, I got so fed up of the police pulling me in every time I went that I packed it in altogether

Hi Pete i bet Mick had some nice stuff for sale he was an avid vinyl man, i`m not to sure when the Locarno finished but it must have been around 80/81 & i remember the police pressence just got out of hand & like yourself i gave up going. I think it started up again in the middle of the 80`s but not sure.

Do you remember a guy called Pat from the Birmingham area, i used to meet him at Birmingham new street every week on the way to the Casino, i met him again at this years Prestatyn with black Simon from your neck of the woods.

does anyone remember the incident at the reading alldayer (either 76 or 77) with chris hill lead everyone from the funk room into the northern room and put a funk record on the turntables (I think it could have been "aint no stoppin us now" ) and some chap in a vest and baggie pants jumped up on stage took the record off the turntable and smashed it ? well that was cockney mick, after that incident (because the northern soul crowd was wayout numberd by the funk crowd) reading all dayers started having funk in the main room and northern in the small upstairs room than I think camberly and the rest of those funk dayers started, anyway cockney mick used to dj at the locarno, I remember him giving me a lift to birmingham after yate a couple of times, he had a flashy ford cortina if my memorie's correct.

Saw Mick last Saturday night at Bisley, great guy, always been around as long as I can remember. Went to Bisley with him in 70s after the Shades of Green in Camberley, when they used to have Friday all nighters. I remember the incident at Top Rank, Reading, all looked like getting nasty at the time!! Mick must be one of the biggest soul fans I've known, had a great record collection. Well remember the Locarno all dayers especially after Yate, 78/79 ish, heavy weekends, but happy days!!!! Cockney always had a flashy cortina by the way.

Left Brighouse on a rainy Saturday in 1977 and got the train down to Plymouth where we (me & Karen) moved in to a bedsit.

Jumped on a coach the day after to a Sunday All Dayer at Birmingham Locarno.

That's all I can remember!
