  1. why would the same seller sell one a few days later for $2400 when they got $3750 with 19 bidders a few days earlier? I guess I am misunderstanding how ebay works ? e.g. could it be that one of the bidders from monday made an offer (maybe nearer $3750, possibly their previous max bid) ) which was accepted or cant this happen? if there is a boxful then i might get one yet!!
  2. I wasnt surprised at the price in the current market for a minter but only having bought a few from the US myself isnt there a risk of an extra wack of duty on top & then vat.
  3. Thanks for the info. It was supposed to be mint/"probably previously unplayed" copy but a lot of money with the $ at .77 & potentially import duty etc on top! fabulous bit of soul tho!
  4. Did anyone see how much the Flash Mckinley I'll rescue you went for on Ebay early hours of today? I thought it was tonight so missed it....... Thank You

only one bad do 'experience' that springs to mind (not counting a couple of local pub dos where you know what to expect). Been to this do before once & enjoyed it but as it was about 140 miles away I phoned to make sure it was on, told yes it will be a 'cracker'etc.... Got there to find about 3 people + the organisers, who explained it was quiet because nearly everyone had gone to a particular weekender and they weren't sure whether to put it on or not! could have told me before!!

maybe dj fees should be reduced by a % for every repeat play & all dj's paid out at the end of the event......
  7. This one brings a smile for me...... Chaumonts I need your love...
  8. You could try rarenorthernsoul.com they do the white cardboard sleeves and also do brown or white inner sleeves that actually fit easily into the outer card sleeves.
  9. Johnny Howard, and for me this was quite an easy decision = just more energetic/aggressive..

Bootlegs = just wrong, criminal and the playing/acceptance of them just encourages more crooks to make them. When it comes to re-issues (legal ones) v ovo then I guess there is an argument along the lines of...…… came to dance to it, couldn't tell without looking at the label, most people dont care etc.... which is I suppose a 'logical' argument. However for me soul music is not about logic is about the heart and knowing the record is original, whether playing or dancing makes it for me.

I covered mine with 'home & legacy' as part of the home contents cover and it wasn't really any more expensive than my previous home contents (which wouldn't include the value of my records outside the house). I would say it is worth asking up front (before you have a loss!) as to what proof they would ask for as 'Home and legacy' suggested at least a complete log with all details and values (I do mine on excel) and ideally a photo of each record. Takes a lot of time to do and then keep up to date but insurance companies are good at not paying out. It would be interesting to know of anyone has any experience of actually making a claim for loss of records?

Totally agree on the dishonesty part. Surely if only originals were played then all dj's would have to put together a 'rich and varied' set. It is because of boots/re-issues being played that you get to hear the same sounds....

Not necessarily. One just requires a heap of cash, the other doesn't. Commitment, time and passion were all in abundance back in the days when none of us had massive amounts of money to lavish on our collections or DJ boxes. Just as I'm absolutely sure that some of the guys and girls DJ-ing at small, lesser known events nowadays have just as much commitment, time, and passion as the ones with boxes worth six figure sums. In fact, they probably have more commitment, (and thicker skins) as they also have to deal with insults, opprobrium, and derision from the self appointed soul police and vinyl snobs. I'm talking about now not back in the day as i thought you were when you said about pensions and inheritence spends on records... I dont have a problem with non ovo at pub/small type events (re-issues not boots), but if I have to pay & or travel to an event I simply want to know what I can expect. I dont think I have ever seen an event or a dj advertising the fact that boots/re-issues will be played, so if they think there is a good argument for it then they should just be upfront about it. This is a well worn debate and the arguments have been aired many times on both sides. I would just like transparency before i pay my money.

or you could spend a couple of hundred quid on a box of boots and call yourself a DJ. Can I suggest that one requires a bit more commitment, time and passion than the other - decide for yourselves.
  15. Edwin, seems much more committed emotionally.
  16. Intruders & ballad = yes. the flip on intruders is nice but prob not for a niter.
  17. I think the biggest indicator of is that although we still break into the chemist on the way to a do.............. we now steal all the ibuprofen.
  18. I guess everyone would look back on their younger days and conclude that things are just not as good, the excitement , the unknown is no longer there. But my attitude is don't compare your life now (including attending do's..) with how it was, compare going out now with the alternatives available to a 60+ year old - the worst soul do is still better than bingo, tea dance or whatever. I mostly go out in the south and usually just all dayers or nites (I do a few all niters up north each year) and my experience is that there are very few dressed in baggies etc... and although top500 records are played at every event they are not in the majority. I never dreamed that I would be doing what I do now at 60+ when I was 20, 30 or 40... I am so f***ing happy when I go out and long may it last.

in the pike picture you appear to be wearing the colours of the Peaches record label (Admirations you left me...) if deliberate a great choice for a pike photo.
  22. just choked on me sandwiches listening to these - to be fair i only got a few seconds into each of them....
  23. Interesting re; the colour variations.... fascinating how a record with more than one release & under 2 diff names is apparently so rare. Anyone got any real idea how many of these about. JM book reckons less than 25 Admirations and less than 10 aspirations although I'm sure i remember a post saying they thought rareity was the other way round. (Talking about you left me/i want to be free of course). Absolutely fantastic record.

  25. jjB (but only just) has that smoother ( almost Marvin Gaye esque..) quality to the vocals... (at least to my ears).
