I Don't Do This - Sidney Joe Qualls
Correct and it's legit. It came out about 7 years ago now.

Bretby County Club- 20 Year Anniversary
Bretby was my first allnighter in 1996, having not taken much interest in northern soul for 10 years. It was Chris King's 40th birthday bash with three rooms and a marquee for record dealers. It was a fantastic night. I remember hearing stuff I hadn't heard for years like Detroit Executives, Marie Knight, Ad Libs which I never appreciated before. I didn't expect to hear anything I'd know in the modern room but heard Mary J. Blige, Blackstreet, Maze, Incognito and sother great stuff. Gavin Page was on form. Everyone was very friendly and it reinspired me to get back into it, so I have a very soft spot for Bretby.

Playing Funk Records At Soul Venues
Rose Batiste. Yes Pete, it's one of the all time greats but I just use it as an example that even the most fantastic records eventually wear with time. To hear something a bit different is good. Maybe these funky type tunes don't fit in with the typical northern soul beat but there's been plently of exceptions over the years. At least it's moving forward a bit in time!

Playing Funk Records At Soul Venues
The northern soul scene has got to progress somehow. The punters, records and media are getting older and older as each year passes by. Even "Hit and Run" is 45 years old now! It's amazing the scene has survived this long and it ain't going to survive much longer if it doesn't continue to evolve. Playing the funky type tunes is a good thing imo.

Smokey Robinson
I love "Being With You" too. I think of it as a great soul record that just happened to achieve commercial success at hit no. 1. I love his solo stuff best. Baby That's Backatcha, Cruisin, Tell Me Tomorrow, All My Life's A Lie are all fantastic. The best songwriter ever imo!

By Any Other Name
Is that right? The Triumphs on Okeh of "I'm Coming To Your Rescue" fame? Well I never!

Grapevine 2000 Label .... By Steve Plumb
Yes, I agree Mark. I remember Dean Johnson reviewing the Sheba Potts-Wright CD in his Blues & Soul page at the time, so that must have shifted a few copies

Price Guide For Lp's
Thanks for putting that up John. I always emjoy reading those type of lists. It's quite southern soul biased but I guess that's his favourite type of soul. It's funny to see LPs I've got in there that I've never considered putting in a top LP list such as Bobby Womack "Womagic" and The Dells vs. the Dramatics. I'll have to dig them out and give them a thorough listen again.

Soulboy - The Movie. You've Seen It So . .
I've finally seen it and thought it was much better than I expected it to be. Some great tunes, story was quite good, dance off was crap obviously but overall I enjoyed it. I don't understand what all the fuss is about.

TV One - Teena Marie - Unsung Episode Online
I feel very upset writing this. She was so talented! Beautiful ballads, great happy uptempo tunes, a belter of a singer and excellent live. Here's a clip of her singing Cassanova Brown, which was her encore, at the IndigO2 earlier this year. Amazing performance, amazing woman. RIP Teena.

Patrice Rushen, Haven't You Heard On Elektra
Not really. Good song though.

Ns In Film
The Love You Save (May Be Your Own) by Joe Tex is in Death Proof. Excellent film and excellent song (not really northern though)

Dereck & Ray - Interplay Rca
That's when I heard it first too. I bought a UK RCA 45 at the time and used to clap my hands like a madman but it hasn't come out of the old record box for a long time.

Dereck & Ray - Interplay Rca
I don't know why you're asking about the format. Do what you want mate. You don't need anyones approval. The only problem with playing it out is that it's rubbish

Modern Soul 45S
You could try the usual retailers Soul Brother, Crazy Beat, Simply Soul Mail Order. What sort of 45s are you thinking of? Personally I haven't bothered much and prefer to get a full CD with the other tracks on it for the same price. Exceptions I suppose are things like Sonja Grier and Carlton Smith.

Marvin Gaye - This Love Starved Heart Of Mine / Desperate Situation (Motown Pic Sleeve)
I was there that night too. It was my first ever all nighter up north (well up north for me ). Wasn't Tommy Hunt there too? I got very pissed on Caffreys but had a cracking time. I ended up swapping my wife's 45 for a Goldmine CD as I hadn't see the full range before. I had given up listening to northern soul for 10 years before that but it got me going again.

Donald Byrd
Sounds about right. It's not hard and was very popular at the time. Excellent record I never tire of hearing
