  1. I think it's terrible too. Doesn't resemble soul music at all.
  2. RIP Syl. Lots of great songs to chose from
  3. I was at that Teena Marie gig too, which was fantastic. Sadly her last ever UK performance.
  4. I haven't been to see a gig but have been to the bar on another night. I think it's quite a small venue so don't think you can go far wrong.
  5. Some of that stuff was very big down south at the time of release when it wouldn't have made a northern soul do. NS has become a much broader church since and consists of all sorts of sub-genres. Even it only gets a NS spin 30 years later and some folk get to hear it at an NS event, it gets tagged as NS. Also, record sellers love to add a NS tag to it, because some daft folk will pay alot of £££ for something which, sometimes, is around in big numbers.
  6. I think Garland Green beats both of them (amongst others)
  7. Is that the first CD appearance for the Mel & Tim track?
  8. Thanks for that. I've enjoyed all those films and am really looking forward to the Aretha Franklin movie. There's been many rumours of an Otis Redding film over the years and I'd love to see that done well.
  9. Yes it's an original, co-written by Beverley herself. I like it too.
  10. Thanks both. Mickey, yep lots of other good stuff out there too. I enjoyed the Will Downing and Kim Tavar albums too. THere's so much great UK soul out there at the moment and my mix has mostly UK acts, which wasn't deliberate. I dodn't bother with the Sheree Brown after hearing the first single. Mal, yes quite. I'd like to see her wear it live 😅
  11. Now that we've finally reached May almost after a seemingly never ending lockdown, I was thinking about the great music I've enjoyed at home so far this year. Some of it is brand new like Myles Sanko, Stone Foundation, some released on a 45 for the first time like the wonderful D.C.R., Sean Oliver, Natasha Watts, some remixed like Teena Marie and Incognito and others previously unreleased like Phillip Ballou. None of them played out loud and live at an event. Hopefully, it won't be much longer.
  12. I've had to listen to this a few times before I really appreciated it, but this a really classy CD from beginning to end. Although I knew the Isaac Hayes track from the Sweet Taste of Sin CD from 20 years ago, hearing it again sounds an absolute deep soul classic to me. You can't help thinking, when you hear songs like this, that he really must've been going through this anguish in real life. The pain is so evident in the last minute or so. 13. It's pretty good. Personally, I think the vocoder effect when you sing "why..." will put quite a few soul fans off, but overall I like the vibe. Good luck with it Beth.
  14. This is quite brilliant. 365 is a stand out for me. The whole package is such a good reminder of how great she was.
  15. The best song I've heard on an advert recently is Candi Staton's "A Little Taste of Love" which featured on a short lived Sainsbury's ad.

I'm getting a bit confused now. Mine has the star and U4KM-901-1C-A1A in the deadwax. Which one is it?
  17. Some good tunes there. Cookin' on 3 Burners came out in 2009.
  18. Loving all the clippings posted.
  19. I saw the show in Greenwich and it was amazing. I would never have thought that even 5-6 years earlier that the subject could be successfully made into a stage show, but it was so well done. Much better than most tv/film efforts.
  20. I went a couple of times in 2001/2, mainly for the modern room. Really enjoyed it. Well worth the trip up from Kent. On fact quite a few of us southerners travelled up on both occasions.
  21. Back in the early / mid 80s, I was surprised when the occasional new record started to get played in the northern soul rooms. Although it took a bit of getting used to at the time, these sounds soon became the most popular of the night. Some got mainstream recognition, some became anthems and others not really discovered until over 15 years later. This mix includes some big well known names like Harold Melvin, Detroit Spinners and Gladys Knight, northern soul stalwarts like Chuck Jackson, Barbara Lynn and Mary Love to the usual obscure artists that nobody has ever heard of since.
  22. Album of the year imo is Ledisi's - The Wild Card featuring this dancer. A real solid album with lots of great tracks. She's been pretty consistent for 20 years now.
  23. They never played together in the UK, but they did in the States. I saw Luther 3 times and Anita twice during that period and they were separate gigs.
  24. Sweet Things is the much better record imo. Proper uptempo Detriot Northern.
