  1. Hello Dave & Pete, My questions weren't meant to be taken as having a pop, so to speak (that's the problem with the written word). From what you wrote, I still think alot of it is connected to our youths. As Dave stated that he bought his 1st records in '65, I know that for the only way to own alot of American music (whether it was soul, blues or whatever) was to get it on new (at the time) British releases. All I'm trying to say is that I feel that the older UK releases seem to be held in greater esteem (or with even greater affection) than the newer releases. From what Pete said about stuff being only on catalogue for a few months, I get the impression that some at the time were probably available in greater numbers than say for instance, the current Kent Select series. Whereas the new releases nowadays will sit with record sellers (or remain for sale on ebay for evermore ), I'd imagine back in the day stuff that didn't sell (and let's be honest there were agreat deal more record buyers back then, than there are now) was just returned to the distributors to be disposed of. Most record shops then would probably push what was popular, which explains why theres so many Beatles and Cilla Black records at car boot sales nowadays and so few Walter Jackson uk demos . I wonder if currently out there is some 14 year old who has just bought a copy of Lily Fields Changes, who in say 30 years time will be proudly showing it off to other record collectors (if there are any then) with the same affection as lot of people have posted on here. As I wasn't buying records until 1979 (couldn't buy them in '65 as I wasn't born until '67 ), I don't have the affinity with UK releases that some others have, but I stand by what I say about connecting them to our youth, rightly or wrongly.
  2. It's been a couple of days and still no replies to these questions? Was it something I said?
  3. I haven't read all the posts on this thread, I know. I posted earlier about not seeing the attraction of collecting British, however I have some questions to ask of you all. Please bear with me. 1. Do you only collect UK releases, which were released in the 60's & 70's (stuff like Phillips, Stateside, Cameo etc.,)? 2. Do you also collect the newer UK releases (such as Kent, Grapevine 2000, Joe Boy, etc.,) 3. If you only collect the 60's & 70's releases, why not the newer stuff as well? 4. (Please forgive me if this question maybe going over very old and well worn ground ) Why if it's seemed acceptable to play (this is only an example) the UK release of say, Walter Jacksons Uphill Climb, but maybe not the Kent release of Unique Blend's Yes I'm In Love. Both were/are legitimate UK releases, but for some reason most if not all ovo fans would find one acceptable and the other not (imho ), why is that? In my previous post I stated about can't seeing why buy something UK instead of US (or along those lines), since then I've been thinking about this thread. Now I have a few Kent singles and buy the odd one here and there (to be honest would like a complete set), but is buying something British more to do with us trying to keep a link with our youth? I mean there's quite a few posts on here about buying stuff as new UK releases back in 68,69,70,71 etc., but very few about buying a new UK release these days 2008, 09, 10? This is just somethings that have been puzzling me and I just wondered what all your thoughts on the subject were/are?

Playing Devil's Advocate here, are we talking about the 100 Club or the 6T's Rhythm 'N' Soul Club?

Under 25?? You're having a laugh ain't you? Depends on where you're hanging it out! Back to the 100 Club. I'll admit to being one of those who just attends the anniversary do's, although I don't sell the records. I live about 20 miles away from the 100 club, but unfortunately I'm a lazy git. I have never had the stamina to remain awake for an entire allnighter, as such I tend to bale out early. To do this I drive up there, last couple of times found car parking no problems at all, just the bloody traffic (even on a Saturday night) stresses me out. I work on the trains and as has been mentioned when it finishes at 6.00am, means a long wait for the first train home. Might seem little issues but still a deterent. As for the club itself, right here goes. Sound system not the greatest in the world, I'm not a dancer, but I do enjoy listening. Membership, tricky one, I prefer it when it's like minded people (soulies/mods whatever you want to call 'em) and if I'm honest some of the recent lookbacks have put me off attending abit. Passer-bys don't send off for anniversary tickets do they? Also the hours, I used to enjoy queuing up outside waiting for the 1.30am start, knowing everyone waiting was a member and that the passerbys would have to keep on walking. Would the bar closing at 3am, like the old days, improve things? Finally, it's the 21st century, decent bogs wouldn't go amiss.

When I've made payment, it states/asks if I'm paying the fees. I make the payment plus I cover the fees, the payment is still sent as a gift and as far as I'm aware no seller has paid fees on those transactions. If they have they've never came back to me to query it .

Not so. I have sent payment as gift and I've never got any credit balance , payments taken from my debit card linked to bank account. Also I've never had any problems buying from people on here, amongst others kjw, Pete Smith, Godzilla, Chris Anderton, Pikeys dog, Mark Bicknell, celthomas, etc.,
  8. Unfortunately for the seller, I don't think he'll be able to shift this now, not for £25 anyway. Especially now it's got an official release on Kent. Link to kent records site
  9. Hope you get sorted soon James.
  10. Got my copy last year at a car boot sale, for £1.
  11. I'd favour US over UK releases, the exceptions being stuff that hasn't been released in US. How can anyone find those boring white Chess/PYE Int promos attractive ?
  12. Bit concerned after seeing the other scan , so can anyone put my mind at rest at confirm that this hasn't been booted?
  13. WDJ?? I've gotta promo copy, but it certainly isn't white (see below )! Last copy I saw for sale was about £75, had mine about 5 years now and paid about £25-30 (memory not what it was )
  14. Is the paper trying to tell us something? Big article on Northern Soul and an advert for fires offering "Pensioners Discount"!
  15. I bought my (later MCA distributed) copy at Exmouth Scooter Run 1985 and I wouldn't sell it for all the tea in China.
  16. I got one of these at the time, think Trevski's right, it was only a tenner or so (might have only been $9.99).
  17. Well that depends, what does she look like?
  18. With comments like that, is it any wonder why there's so few youngsters getting involved in this scene.
  19. If it's for charity, think you're targeting the wrong audience. What I mean is if it was advertised as a charity Motown & Soul night, then you're probably have more success with the general public. Also you'd have more scope for playing a wider variety of soul from your collection. If you advertised it as a Northern Soul night (cd's), it's doomed to failure. Remember there's an awful lot of people who like soul & motown who are not members of(or even look at) this site. Northern Soul Night to have any credibility has to be OVO. Charity Soul Night nobody will care what it's played off, or at least they shouldn't because the main aim is to raise money for charity, isn't it?

Out of all the records I buy from Ebay I'd say a good 95% (probably closer to 99%)are from the US. Also I find that most of them undergrade as well. I was going to mention favourite sellers, but come to think of it want to keep 'em to myself!
  21. Think, the nearest event is Bisley (just off j3 of M3), but that's still outside London by about 15 - 20 miles.
  22. If I'm buying and sellers states add 4% (or whatever) for paypal, I work it out. If I'm still happy with price I pay it, no problem. Some sellers state no extra for paypal, in which case I'll send as gift to avoid them losing out on charges. I might be paying a touch extra, but the amount I pay for a record it's usually only amounts to an extra £1 to £2 anyway. I can live with that. I honestly can't see a problem with this issue, same as sellers on ebay. If it's listed what the charges are to be then you have to take that into consideration, it's not rocket science is it?
  23. I don't know about Little Britain, more like Benidorm?
  24. Too much information!
