  1. Although the Jam have nothing to do with Northern Soul, back in the early '80s my mate John Orritt used to sell Weller Northern cassettes as he was getting into the sound. Paul
  2. Are you sure he didn't have his Ipod plugged in, because At the Crown Hotel In Ryde That I was at last week, all I heard was crackin' Northern Soul. Oh yeah and Rufus Lumley "Stronger than me" But apart from that It was brilliant. You didn't play my request for Nolan Porter either. Great weekend boys . Paul

I agree, great quote that sums it up. I don't know whether to be flattered or what, but last weekend I went to the Isle Of Wight Scooter Rally weekend. I don't get around much any more to Northern dos and haven't for 20 odd years. I was having a good old bop to some class oldies when I was approached and the bloke said "did you go to Wigan" I replied in the affirmative and that I stopped going in '76 when I joined the Navy. He said I could tell by the way you dance. Does this mean I looked like a pilled up 18 year old(i'm not) or was there a particular style?. It may have been the flayling hands that did it. Paul By the way, to all the DJs at the Crown last weekend, Thanks for a great time.
  6. I always liked it, but when Dave Evison(I think) played it at the Casino in about 74/75, it cleared the floor. A couple of years later it was massive? Paul
  7. First allnighter was Va Vas, must have been beginning of Sept ish 73 with the Ormskirk crowd, Mandy Edis ,Porky, Steve Marchant Tommy Allinson. First record I heard was Alice Clarke "You Hit Me", but the one that blew me away was Mel Williams. I went back a couple of weeks later, but by now I wasn't old enough! I was 15. Waited then & started going to Wigan In November 73. Don't get out much nowadays, but just had a great weekend in The Isle Of Wight Crown Hotel in the company of Mischief, John Buck, Mick Lloyd & anyone I've missed. Also met Soulie64(I think) & had a good drunken verbal . Thanks for the memories Paul
  8. Living near Ormskirk I new Pete from the early Wigan days. A couple of stories. I remember him outside Wigan waiting to get in, and were stood next to the kerb. A car comes along, Pete just jumps in front of it & shoputs BOO!. Luckily, the driver stopped before it hit him. For Pete Smith, yes it was the same guy. He used a recording studio, for his emidiscs, also used by the top DJs at the time. The owner used to tape all the sound that the other people got pressed up and give it to Pete. That's how Pete had all the top sounds on EMIs. I have others, but I only knew him for a short time on the scene, as I moved on & joined the Navy. I last saw him at Stafford in '84 when Gene Chandler Was on, and had a good verbal with him. great guy. Paul
  9. Yep, hadn't noticed it before definately Detroit Land Apples. Not that I ever doubted you Pete! Paul
  10. I quite like what they do. I'm toying with the idea of going to see them on the Isle Of Wight on Saturday, but I'll probably just got to the Crown Hotel for the Northern. Paul
  11. My Crazy baby Looks ok as per your description exactly. And the Johnny Mae Mathews also looks ok. Thanks for you help. Any idea on rough Values nowadays? Paul
  12. Thanks for the info, here here's a bit more detail Details on the run out are hand scratched 67c-130950 11 about 1/4 of the way round clockwise is a W (this is viewed with the bottom of the W nearest playing surface). On the oposite side is LW(with the W inside the angle of the L) then there is a ( skinny)TA. These details are similar to my Crazy baby issue(but this also has a strange tiny stamp in the runout almost like a "turnip" with an S in it!. this Coasters issue is matt while the JMM has a slight sheen. The JMM has been around since at least 72/73 although I only acquired it in around 75. and I know the Coasters has been discussed previously, but I would like an opinion on its origninality or not Paul

As a general rule of thumb, if I have it, then it's aboot Paul
  14. Has this ever been booted as an Atco Demo? Also has anyone any information. The writer credits are Melvin Davis. It uses the same backing track as The Platters "Going Back To detroit" written by Dixon, Scott, Jennings. Anyone know the story. Anyone know an approx value for the pictured demo? Oops posted the track by accident! Paul
  15. As I think that this task would be impossible, has any ever had a wants list, found everything on it and sat back satisfied? Paul
  16. Thing is Tone, as you know, pop records have always been played on the scene and still are as oldies & new discoveries. Unfortunately at Wigan there were periods when they appeared to be the norm and not the exception. Paul
  17. I know I did go to an oldies at this time so this could have been it. Strangely for this Martha gig I was also at that side of the balcony but at the back corner. probably for the first time. Don't know what gear I had! Paul
  18. That was probably about the same for me! Paul
  19. I would say it was probably '79, as I didn't go to Wigan Very much as I had joined the navy in 76. I was there for Martha though and I remember my mate with me and that would place it very late 78 but more likely early 79. Paul

Well I'll have you know, I've got a demo copy of Doomsday(Voc & Inst) on the limited Tomorrow label signed by Evelyn Thomas herself, and given to me by the actual (alleged) writer of the record. I think his name was Ivan Latrean. As it says "not for sale" on it, I won't part with it so no use asking Paul
  21. Bought mine in Pompey Paul
  22. I've always been a big fan of the Dynamics version of this, but it's the first time I've heard it by Dusty. Brilliant. Just got a couple of Dusty(and dusty) albums out. She was a great performer. Paul
  23. I had forgotten how absolutely fantastic this record was. Thank you for pointing me back into my record box for a truly brilliant re-discovery. Hairs on the back of the neck time or what!!! Paul
  24. I Love it. Great clip. In my opinion as important as the Gerry Hall and other great clips of forgotten soul. Paul

Unfortunaltely mine looks like being the counterfit. It hasn't come as much of a surprise. I just wasn't sure. But It still is one of my top memories. Thanks for the info Paul
