Sam Dees 6 Copies Available
Following on from somebodies wants posting a few months ago asking for Little John on Gogate where I added a snippet of an old letter I'd found........ Well in the same bundle of old letters there was another one dated 1988. For your amusement I present And the funniest bit was I didn't buy them. Bear in mind though at that time Sam Dees was only worth about a tenner so after adding postal costs etc etc it was hardly worth bringing them over. It never even crossed my mind to buy 'em and sit on 'em for 20 odd years or so........ I would imagine some of the bigger record dealers might do that. Mmmm with hindsight maybe that's why I never became a millionaire hahaha..... derek x

Any Info On James Lately
Unable to furnish any hard facts regarding Mister Lately all I can add is a neat little anecdote: Many years ago I'd only just heard the Temple release for the first time via the usual tape swop. I remember I was stood about somewhere talking about records, Chris Shepherd was also there along with a few other lads. The Temple 45 came up in conversation and one of the lads started to tell a story about how Chris got his copy. With Chris looking suitably embarrassed it turns out many years before a mate of his had given him the record for free saying summat like "You like that sorta slow stuff don't ya? Have this - it's too slow for me". We gasped with admiration. Derek

Village Choir "talk To Me Sometimes" Dcm
Will always be indebted to Jim Eddlestone from Lincoln for putting me onto this fabulous record via a tape swop circa early 90's. His comment summed it all up "wait till the bird starts singing near the end". Derek

80's Flyers
Hey up Chalky - as I'm a borderline obsessive hoarder you won't be surprised to know that I've got carrier bags full of old flyers secreted in various rooms upstairs. Once I've moved all the unwanted stuff I never knew I needed I can pull some old flyers out and give them some air. Probably got spares as well (don't ask....) if I have, I'll post them down to you. Otherwise it will have to be scans I'm afraid. Derek

Putting Your Money Where Your Mouth Is
Got my copy for a couple o' dollars from the floor of a garage somewhere in Philadelphia mid 1990's. Didn't know it but it looked pretty interesting. You wouldn't leave it would ya. Flogged it to an old buddy of mine (Craig Butler of Brighouse) for summat like £30 or so middle of last year. Then only a week or so later Mister Manship's auction ended and the news broke of the figure it realised. Once I'd stopped crying I shrugged mi shoulders and thought nah thirty was a fair price what the hell. And finally Andy Rix once told me that the flip side "If I was an orange" was used in a TV commercial or summat. Derek x

El Camino - I Have To Go Here One Day
You've gotta be joking eh?.....I can't even jump off the top board at the swimming baths. By 1:25 I'd have feigned injury, turned round and rung a taxi. It's just so wrong. No, No, No, No, No, No............. Derek

Aaarrgghhh! Wombat Im Gettin' On Life?
Source: Popsike with jukebox strip (file under 'Popular') For the record I can smugly state that I have never owned (or even considered the thought of even owning) the said record. Phew my conscience is clear and I can sleep easy tonight. I remembered it as being bad but couldn't recall what it sounded like. Then YouTube quickly reminded me that my first impressions were correct. About as soulful as a bag o' crisps and as white as the driven snow. But as a pure dance record - at that time - that could move a big dance floor you can see why it went massive. And finally for the record I can state that I have never owned (or even considered the thought of even owning) the said record. Derek x

Derek Pearson saying it for soul all eras all styles Saturday 30th March 2013 21.00-22.00pm. Bradford Community Based Radio BCB 106.6FM Once more we carry on regardless saying it for soul by playing a weird and wonderful selection of them old soul 45s. Music other stations can’t play or won’t play. On tonight’s show it’s with great pleasure that we welcome into the BCB studios for the very first time Cliff Steele that most well known DJ/Collector from Northampton. In amongst other places he DJ’s at Cliff is currently one of the residents at the influential Lifeline all-nighters. I’ve known Cliff a long time and due to him working on a contract up north I was able to persuade him to venture over the Pennine’s into the studio for his radio debut. If you would like to hear the show live there’s 2 ways to go about it — if you live within say 10 miles of the BD1 based studio tune your radio to the 106.6 frequency on your FM dial and you should be able to get it. Failing that go through the wonders of the World Wide Web on www.bcbradio.co.uk and hear it streamed live out of your PC. You can also listen to some previous shows (up to 2 months maximum) by accessing the BCB home page www.bcbradio.co.uk then clicking on the Listen Again button (top left corner of the page). Scroll backwards on the calendar to find the relevant dates. Then click on the date and all the specialist shows between 8pm and 4am will be shown. On finding my name you have the choice to either listen to it or download it. My regular schedule on BCB Radio is 2 weeks on 2 weeks off so the next pair of shows will be on Saturday’s 20th & 27th April. Guests on those 2 weeks will hopefully be Colin Wood and Matthew Simpson. Is Curtis Mayfield Move On Up Uplifting
Mmmm it's interesting you say that - 'Move On Up' was before my time and I always sort of assumed it was initially a big underground northern hit which then crossed over into the pop charts. So wasn't 'Move On Up' played much as a new release then on the northern scene? And the reason this thread caught my eye was that only a few days ago after I'd been out walking mi dog near Shipley I called into a co-op in Saltaire on mi way home for some bits n bats. As I was bending over to examine the fresh bread 'Move On Up' came on over the in house radio. It still sort of shocks me somewhat to hear it in places like this but I do feel an element of pride knowing that our scene helped to make it the classic it is. And just like The Beatles its the sort of track you'll hear every now and again on the radio or where ever till the day I die. To be honest I could never dance to it as it's so bleeding fast - does anybody know what its BPM is? Still love to hear it though - uplifting is such a great word to describe it. And from a collectors point of view - it wasn't a hit on release in America, that's why US copies are pretty rare and a lot more expensive (seen demo's @ £50 last year). Derek

Best Record On Ebay
Phew I thought that only happened to me...... I distinctly recall having this mad month sometime back end of last year where I suddenly remembered and thought about searching for a particular record. A record that I hadn't looked for before so it wasn't in my saved searches. I stumbled upon at least 4 records I would have eagerly bid on and wanted to win. One record I rated at £50+ went for £30-ish whilst another I thought was about £125+ just scrapped above £50. This weirdness hasn't happened since. And NO it isn't good fun 'cos I wanted them hahaha. Billy Woods, Let Me Make You Happy
Just checked Popsike to find only one Sussex original documented. BILLY WOODS "Let Me Make You Happy" (Sussex 213) End price: USD 5750 End date: 2007-07-11 Start price: USD 100 Start date: 2007-07-04 Number of bids: 19 Description/Condition (from the seller): Here's one of the rarest NORTHERN SOUL 45s from the 70s - Billy Woods' "Let Me Make You Happy" b/w "That Was the Love That Was". I found this record in a box of exclusively BUDDAH label related 45s that I uncovered while cleaning out one of my record stores' storage areas. There were hundreds of records on the Sussex, Buddah, Kama Sutra, Cobblestone and Smobro labels, 95% of which were promos and none of which appeared to have been used. They probably were from a label rep who retired in Virginia Beach, Va. I recall winning them at an auction there years ago and simply must have forgotten about them. This record is in beautiful VG+ ('a' side') to VG++ ('b' side) condition, with the important 'b' side being the cleanest. It appears to be unused, but does have a few very light sleeve scuffs. It's a "DJ" copy that is clearly marked "NOT FOR SALE", and has bright, clean, centered labels. It comes with the original Buddah label inner sleeve. And also at the risk of answering my own questions (hahaha) Popsike made me reckon the Billy Woods on Verve is the same geezer we’re on about — check the label on “I don’t want to lose your love” to see Sussex Productions Inc. It's all good fun innit. Derek

Billy Woods, Let Me Make You Happy
Has anybody ever seen a discography of the label complete or otherwise? Where about's does the Billy Woods 45 fit in time wise? Is there anything else on the label which suffered the same or similar fate as "Let me make you happy"? And finally is this the only known release by him? Where did he come from? And where did he go? Derek

Billy Woods, Let Me Make You Happy
Word was and I don't know how true it is that JA picked up a finger full. When he went back the rest had gone ... but where? I've said it before and I'll say it again.....of all the people who need to be interviewed at great length for a book John Anderson is top of my list. He's probably found, seen and looked at more records than any other person dead or alive. He's probably forgot more than everybody on this forum put together knows. If he said yes - I'd switch the tele off, lock the front door and set off to Kings Lynn now. Derek The scene that we're all a part of was built on and around that man.
