Stephanie Mckay, Vocal To Double Barrel Dave Ansal Collins
I've heard this played at a Northern do - the Metrodome in Barnsley to be exact, and it was by a female DJ - Sam Evans I think she's called? Great record but wrong place, wrong time IMO - however, it was funny watching the Roxy Threads and Circle Skirts doing the slidey side to side dance to a uppy-downy record... a bit like watching a piece of film with with the wrong soundtrack.

American Record Distribution 60`s
John Anderson has a great tale about a big distributers just outside Philadelphia, where he was buying tea-chest size crates, contents unchecked as they were coming in off the trucks returning them.

American Record Distribution 60`s
There were plenty of shenanigans going on with distribution. The cut-out resale scam, where records were bought at sale prices then taken back to another distributer for a full refund was rife (and a way the mafia laundered a lot of money) - to the point where drill holes / cut corners and label paint/stamps were introduced to prevent it.

Traveling Tips? Memphis 13-25 October
Rent a car online for the best rate, bearing in mind that they will try and sell you 1001 different insurance add ons if you book when you arrive. Also rent one with an 'empty tank' - that way you can return it empty - and they won't charge you the earth to refill it. You can turn right at red lights so long as there isn't a sign on the light telling you otherwise (obv giving way to any traffic).

Dj'ing Abroad
I've never heard of this happening. U.S. flights - you can carry just about as many 45s as you can fit in your hand luggage - it's down to size not weight. It's the budget airlines you've got to be careful with - they like to scrape every penny they can in additional charges, hence the weight limits.
-
Dj'ing Abroad
You can get about 60 - 70 through as hand luggage on most budget airlines, even in a sturdy (and heavy) Swanflight box (just under 10 kgs). There are loads of 7" record "bags" on the market it's just down to personal preference.

Is The 'Upfront' Soul Scene Disappearing Up It'S Own A*se?
Here's a true story that I've been dying to tell, and this thread is as good a place as any, and it sums up the 'parallel scenes' for me... A female friend told me this - she's been attending Northern nights since the 70s, mainly an Oldies fan but not close minded.. and it made her cringe. Whilst at a local 'oldies' do she was approached by a woman in her 50s wearing a circle skirt etc, who complimented her on her dancing. She got chatting to this woman, and was told that it was the first Soul night that she had attended and that her friend had told her about Northern, and she was planning to visit her first Weekekender (Skeg) but only ... cue muted trumpet... wahwahwaaah....after her friend had shown her how to dance 'Northern'.. In a nutshell it's full of middle aged Divs, who are aware that it is a 'sociable' scene, and think that they are taking a dip in the fountain of youth by singing along to Lynn Randell. And for that reason I'm out.
