Wander into a venue snd they are playing Devonnes I wanna be loved its upfront , however if they are playing April Stevens then not upfront . Hope that helps . If they play both we are fooked

From the likes of Idris Mohhamed to Fats Domino a broad church so much more than just music. For me NS is a culture you either get it or you dont . The politics and sqabbles are all part of it . As long as this daft scene puts a grin on your face its doing its job .

See they have the usual suspects dancing . We can now eat shredded wheat , catfood ,eggs and kfc in our B and Q kitchen washing it all down with a pint of Lambrini safe in the knowlege that we are correctly attired

I can remember watching early skinheads dancing to Prince Buster in a similar style so I allways thought it had come from that culture

Northern soul is unique and peculiar all part of its charm . An analogy I have used in the past is that you can stare at a print of the Mona Lisa and wonder at the genius behind it but its not real it lacks provenace and a tangible link to the artist , the same with vinyl .

The Northern soul scene has allways been about so much more than the music to me . Its culture ,ettiquette politics ,bikering ,lifestyle , an obsession with the obscure and rejected and dare I say fashions over the years have created a unique and enduring subculture . This is ours we have created this in spite of the mainstream media . It baffles them they have no control so are allways destined to get it wrong . It saddens me and amuses me in equal measures . The feckless evangelical soulies need to give their heads a good wobble despite their cosying up to the media it has never done us any favours and never will .

Hi Pete True there are lots of brilliant people out there that are busy documenting the music many of which are on this site and provde a great resource for all to use . Long may that continue . What gets peoples hackles up is the crass missrepresentation of the Northern soul scene as we have just witnessed . Its got nothing to do with age or ownership simply put its wrong Mark .

The music has been well documented for years . A music that was rejected or poorly promoted in its day and discovered by our contemporarys without the media who dont get it and never will . Forty odd years ago I would never have envisaged that there would still be a scene and thats precious to me and we should be protective of it . The silly fame whores that get off on the media thing know the value of nowt and just want their 15 mins , youtube is full of videos that add no value to the scene and leave us open to ridicule . Its all gone to shit .

Just enjoy what we have the future dont matter . The handfull of kids around its just an alternative fad for them by 2060 I bet they wont be reminising about how the soul scene shaped their lives for the last 40 years . At the end of the day its a youth culture that has somehow exeded all our expectations have fun .

The people that need to know allready do, so any intrusion is unnessary no matter how well meaning . The media have never done us any favours we should not do them any .
