A woman came in on YT a while back saying if I was to email her, then she would tell me (claimed to be a relation, maybe daughter?) she didn't reply
  3. The Soul Scene has more so-called members than the Chinese Communist Party. (let me break it down into category's) 1, A large % love to go out for a drink and enjoy a bit of 'Northern' ''Do I Love You'' KTF t shirt. and handbag. 2, All of the above except the handbag 3, Those who only know maybe 6 records, and only want to hear 6 records. (long standers) 4, Those who don't like to hear anything new. (until it's been accepted by the masses, then it's in you're Top 500) (this may take several years) 5, The 1000s of Northern Soul devotees who are life long fans...from their armchairs in front of a computer. Surely one has to attend venues to be part of it ?

it was me who asked Dave Hamilton about the Topper/Mauci backings, he shrugged his shoulders and said he didn't know what I was talking about. 1990

  6. So sad, they want to knock everything down these days, UK and US I did a couple of spots there, i remember playing Melvin Davis. A'int No News. Ke Ke. and taking it off halfway through saying over the mic ''your'e obviously not ready for this one yet'' (1992) but a great forward thinking venue.
  7. R.I.P. Dr Edward J Wolfrum View full article
  8. This evening brings the sad news of the passing of Dr Edward J Wolfrum. Ed was the man behind the screen, the engineer for Motown, Golden World, and United Sound Systems studio, and from the very late 60s running his business from home under the name of Audio Graphics until recently. It's a sad day for music, in the UK we know and take for granted songs such as The Tomangoe's. I Really Love You. Washpan. Norma Jenkins. The Airplane Song. Maltese. The Utopias. Girls Are Against Me. La Salle. Marva Whitney. Savin' My Love For You Baby. Federal. Edwin Starr. Stop Her On Sight/Headline News. Ric Tic. Larry Wright. Sweet, Sweet Kisses. Ago go. Brothers of Soul, Candice Love.. and hundreds more. The passing of Ed has a personal connection with myself, I, Chris King, and Guy Hennigan visited his house in 1985. And later trips I made with Andy 'tats' Taylor, Rob Wigley we found the un-released version of My Dear Heart. Barbara Mercer, and Gwen Owens. You Better Wake Up (before we break up) Candy. Ben Knight. Popcorn Wyley's Sweet Understanding. Got 3 Golden World acetates. Gwen Owens. Hit and Run, Heart Trouble, and Daddy-O. Visited Ed +Sue Wolfrum with John Kingan in 94 Each time went out for dinner, alongside Artie Fields (Top Dog) and heard some wonderful stories, and not all musical. Rest on Ed, you did your bit, and more Gonna miss you Gilly

For a very long time I've wanted to collate stories about the crazy things one has been involved in, witnessed, or been told about. Situations, events that seem to only happen on the Soul/Northern Soul scene that anyone outside the soul fraternity would find hard to believe could possibly happen. You don't have to give name details, you decide, but be respectful as someones past is better left in the past. Two people I know many years ago, that because finding the caravan at one of the weekenders that you departed from some 8 hours previously on you're way to the venue was not so easy (and in the dark) to locate on you're way back. It's just a sea of trailers, and all looking similar, not an easy task at times. So, these two friends thought it a good idea to obtain a large amount of sauce packets (like the ones at the fast food outlets) and as they made way to the event left a trail of the contents on the grass, hoping that would guide them back to their abode. Of course it may still be dark and on this attempt it also rained so this crazy idea failed. Like I said, no one would believe this story outside of the Soul people, in fact this is so mad I'm not sure people within the fraternity would think it true, but it is.! Any stories you have please send to my dedicated email; no.way@btinternet.com PLEASE DO NOT CLOG THIS THREAD UP WITH STORIES, SEND THEM TO THE ABOVE EMAIL ADDRESS. Many thanks Gilly
  11. sorry, The Superlatives
  12. I can tell you ''Popcorn'' Wylie's cousin was in that group, i met him by chance but cant remember his name x
  13. great record, one here
  14. Well I don't drink but sure like to meet one of the days. your a good fellow, i already know that.
  15. nice of you to say, think you are aware in my respect to you, yea I'm no author but I've tried to tell a story of their legacy, something the music media seemed to have missed, D. Ross this, D Ross that, Temptations.... if the Masqueraders had been at Motown, media would have something to write about. And as for these cock wavers who only buy records £1000 min, or it looks like £10000 these days only stopped for a minute and look into the background of the people who made these £10000 records, and gain a bit of knowledge, and respect. best Gilly
  16. Yes, still got a few left, they are trickling out steady but hey above a 1000 sold, not bad, I thought of only having 300 or so printed. When the venues open up again I'm hoping to shift a few, either way I aint bothered. Ive done something that I never thought i could do. Non of what i did as regards the production of the book is world standard, i know but i had to learn to use a computer, learn Word 365, learn how to insert photos, and so much more. That 1st printer done me for a £1000 i had to start again, luckily i found through Phil Dick one Ian Gregory (the guy that does most of the Soul events flyers) what a special guy he is, i may have quit if it wasn't for him. And Jordan Wilson who put me in touch with the eventual printers too. For whatever reason i think friendships have been strained, and that hurts, i love my friends and thought it kinda sad this has happened. One thing that pisses me of is those so-called US experts who despite living in the same town as who i write about, they know best but wont buy my book, i say to them ''why didn't you go and visit these people when they were alive instead of waiting for the British invasion'' Also people who ask the same questions week in week out, buy the fuckin book, its only the price of 2 packets of cigarettes. Both these are Facebook related by the way, not Soul Source matters. Anyway, cheers my friend, one thing for sure i'm not dropping the retail price of my book, that aint fair on those who have supported me.

  18. Another story is about when the Capitols recorded 'Cool Jerk' (it was originally going to be called 'Pimp Jerk' but that title wouldn't have been acceptable back then.) The group were booked to do the first session of the day, the venue was at Golden World Studios (one of the last recording sessions at that studio under Ed Wingates ownership before Berry Gordy JR purchased the studio, then to be called 'Studio B') The track and the vocals will be laid today, on hearing that first take Ollie McLaughlin said it needed 'more kick to the rhythm', so they set up extra microphones in order to add some hand claps. Providing those will be Sam, Richard, and Don Norman Storbell (the group members) Deon Jackson, his cousin Rusty Bayliss, Telma Hopkins, Joyce Vincent, (those two girls would later become Dawn who with Tony Orlando sang chart hit 'Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Old Oak Tree)' and the source of this story the one and only Sharon McMahan Bobby Babbitt is on bass guitar, (not James Jamerson as a lot think) Johnny Griffith on piano. George McGregor in drums, I know Ed Wolfrum was the engineer on that session. Other guys in on that backing track, I'm sorry I don't know. Thank you Sharon McMahan for this story, like I said at the top of the page, yes you ought to write a book, and soon. Well there you have it, a few more stories that didn't make the book on time. If you have already bought the book you will be able to relate to the stories within, and I thank you all. If you have not purchased a book, and like what you read here on Soul Source, let me just say the book is full of this kind of shit, and is only the price of a couple of packs of cigarettes, (even if you don't smoke.
  19. the reason is explained in the book as best I can establish
  20. ''Popcorn'' told me about a wedding in Detroit one time, i don't know of he was in attendance or not, but this is how it goes. At the wedding reception some guy barges in holding and pointing a gun, he knew who he wanted to shoot (the groom) he took aim towards the intended victim at which point the best man stood in front of the groom declaring ''if you shoot him, you're gonna have to take me out too'' The gunman shot and killed them both. Nice Wedding ! ''Popcorn'' having given me a lift to the airport for my return flight there was two guys having a row between one another. I thought I'm not standing here, this is not my argument. So I walked quickly between them to enter the main building. When I got inside ''Popcorn'' appeared through another door and proceeded to give me a right telling off for walking between the two blokes who were arguing. I thought I was doing the right thing by getting out of the way, ''Popcorn'' explained that only a few weeks earlier someone had been shot in doing exactly what I had just done in the crossfire of two guys having an argument (not the same two blokes as far as I know) The lucky lady survived, she was a niece of Jackie Wilson. A few more tomorrow, missed stories from the book
  21. Good mate thanks, and to you both also
  22. Only as I write in the book, although I spent a few hours with him, music was of little interest to him, and being told how big his name is in the UK even less of an interest. Still proud that I managed a visit though.
  23. Back in November 2020 I hoped to have my book out by Christmas of that year, at the time I blamed it on the pandemic, not true. It was the printers themselves that messed me about, so I had to find a replacement printers and quick. Though getting it out by Christmas was impossible, we did manage to meet a January release. Because of me racing a few things got missed, so I have now published on here a couple articles omitted at the time of going to the printers; A lady I met in more recent times having had the pleasure of her wonderful stage appearance at the UKs Cleethorpes's Soul-Weekender, a lady who is more noted for her musical writing ability having 100 registered songs with the BMI, readers, please welcome the child prodigy, song writer and singer Sharon McMahan. Let me tell you not only is she a lovely person, she can also tell some unique stories from her memory bank and with fine detail. She said ''I ought to write a book'' and I agree, she should. Whether Sharon decides to, or not to set about that task, I'm going to pinch a couple of her stories she relayed to me recently, with her permission of course. Ollie McLaughlin made a point of travelling to New York every year and with him he took songs to 'Tin Pan Alley' to try and get deals on them. He would call on Sharon, usually once a week to check if she had any new material for him. Most Saturdays Ollie could be found at United Sound Systems recording one song or another and Sharon often joined him so she could 'watch and learn.' Don't forget Sharon was only a young girl at the time. She goes on to say, Ollie stopped by, it was a Tuesday and said he wanted a song with an English feel to it and he would call back on the Friday to pick it up. As Ollie drove off she said she ''kinda panicked a little bit'' how would she come up with something so quick? She stepped onto the porch of her mothers house where she lived and noticed two doors down Hubert a guy from the neighborhood calling round to his girlfriends house, she shouted over to this Hubert ''give me a title for a song?'' Hubert paused for a second and replied ''Some Day We're Gonna Love Again'' she said ''That will do'' went back into the house, sat down at the piano, and the rest is history of course. The song was first recorded by Barbara Lewis, and then by The Searchers, the latter becoming a hit. OK i have a few more and will post them up in the next few days. If anyone wants a book still contact me via gillybook@btinternet.com or message me on here. I've sold over a 1000 so far but still have a few left, there will be no re-prints.
  24. Fantastic, all in all £521 raised, wicked. Thank you Drew3
