Just Looking For Love Just Looking For My Love
  2. Two tunes for me sum up Wigan Casino & strangely enough they are both by "non-soul" artists & this is in no way derisory. Afternoon Of The Rhino - Mike Post . I have never seen a dancefloor in my life as packed or as animated as when this was at its height of popularity at Wigan. Similarly with Can't Help Loving You - Paul Anka. It filled the floor when covered up as Johnny Caswell - nothing changed when we found out who it really was.
  3. Liked the Lee Dorsey "Coca Cola" ad. Some great musical memories for me on those first 2 podcasts. Ronnie Mcneir, George Blackwell & Bobby Hutton - I had some fantastic times, mates & places & they are/were all centered round those records & their like. Genuinely Pete your knowledge of what "Northern Soul" really is shines out in your choices.
  4. Well Pete you know f**k all about modern soul but you know yer Northern - really enjoying your selections - nice one mate.
  5. Paul Metcalfe is the man to talk to. 01253-318267 is his number.
  6. Fantastic slab of Motown/Northern Soul - would be great to dance to, I imagine, but it never gets played out anywhere does it ? If ever there was a case for CD decks at a venue, then this is surely it !!!
  7. If anybody ever tires of the vocal of "Alone With No Love" - they must be tired of soul music....................& possibly life itself !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  8. Each to their own but I had "No Time" for it myself.

RIP Teddy. Respect for a job well done sir. You have left us with a wonderful legacy. "Be Sure" off his self titled 1977 album is a masterpiece.

Of course I know what you mean Mark. Please don't get me started on "mash ups" I see them as I saw "tailor mades" on the NS scene thirty years ago - totally pointless ! & harmful to people trying to push "bona-fide" new music. However, somebody must like them as people up & down the country dance to them every weekend. Me ? - I'll stick with Kenny, Steph, Heather etc. - they provide me with as much soul music as I need in 2010. There is still a fantastic modern scene chugging along quite nicely IF you know where to look !!!

TBH ladies & gentleman this thread has just degenerated into a posting of modern soul lists & youtube clips. The thread is supposed to be about "modern anthems" - much as I like & have played Maxine Inniss - Dawn Tallman etc. I don't think they are anthems & certainly not in the same league popularity wise, play wise & even that widely known about as records by Jesse James, Corey Blake, Gloria Scott, Bobby Sheen, Percy & Them, Eddie Billups, Bessie Banks etc.etc. There are lots of fantastic modern soul records out there that I would love to see gaining "anthem" status - wanting it to happen & it actually happening are two different things. However, I also understand there can be a fine line between"anthem" & "played out."
  12. Girl I Need You - Artistics (2 Good Sides) Cloudy Day - Doug Gibbs I Can't Make It Anymore Spyder Turner (2 Good Sides) Time - Edwin Starr (2 Good Sides) Soul Improvisations - Van McCoy. I reckon even Plumby could sell you them for less than 50 quid including P&P.
  13. One record, which could never, ever be described as NS, played at The Ritz/Mecca over 32 years ago hardly constitutes an "invasion" of gay disco music. Not having a go at you Webby but it angers me when people (not you) make sweeping statements about the music that is or isn't played on the NS scene & then they never back them up with any hard facts.
  14. Looks like a "school disco" in a sports hall with the geography teacher with the dodgy beard overseeing things !
  15. On this thread there is a reference to "gay disco" being played on the Northern Scene. Can someone please give me the titles of some of these records & where, who & when has played them.
  16. [/quote.] I don't know about anyone else but one of the great things about Soul-Source is the fact that the site covers soul/R&B/northern NOT pop/rock and all the other associated mainstream rubbish. It's our own little oasis, so to speak. Yet, recently we have been subjected to threads covering artists and their so called 'connections' to black music that, in my view, have no relevance to our scene. First it was Hendrix now Elton 'F***ing' John. I, for one, have absolutely NO interest in these people and don't think they have any place on Soul-Source. I'm sure others have their own opinions ...let's hear them.
  17. The people who would mention the seventies (wash your mouth out) are all out at work. The ones who have mentioned the early sixties have just had a visit from their grandchildren (Xmas holidays) & they have helped them post on this thread. PS - This very tongue in cheek - I wish all soulies a very Merry Xmas. BTW 1974 !!!!!

Don't think The Joneses recorded for Fantasy. Think the album you are after is Water & Power by Water & Power on Fantasy - brilliant album with the superb Mr Weatherman on it. The Joneses album on Epic is available below - it's the one with Who Loves You & Lies on it. https://www.funkishere.com/search1-0-1/2/label/epic.html
  19. https://www.juno.co.uk/products/Ur-Daddy-Loves-U/346734-01/ This has been featured at one or two venues this year - it's a rework of a tune from Gil Scott Heron's "Winter In America" album. Incidentally Mario Biondi has covered Winter In America on his new CD.
  20. Salsoul - wonderful label with some of the best tunes ever made on it. Like all the selections mentioned apart from perhaps Spring Rain & Night To Remember - mainly because they were hammered to death in the seventies. Love Double Exposure - Ten Percent is a wonderful piece of music - a true anthem - absolutely top notch. Like their versions of Baby I Need Your Loving & Newsy Neighbours - worth checking out methinks.
  21. All the sevens are a bit "muddy" in the mix. Should try to get the album. Quite hard on Brown Door original but it did get a re-issue on Kon-Kord. The album mix is longer & the sound quality is far superior to the single
  22. Sounds very "Grazin' In The Grass" (Willie Bobo version) in parts - which is no bad thing. Always loved the funk driven Northern sound anyway - like it.
