  1. OMG! i have only just heard about ted,s passing...what a void the man will leave, i didnt know ted we had banter on the web years ago but what a smashing bloke, i truly am gutted..condolences to his family and close friends...terrible.
  2. yes this is the 2nd time its happened to JM as far as i know, its a bit of a blow to his business for the time being, and all the work Paul Royle has put in, but knowing john he will bounce back with a solution. Interesting to note that JM,s Rock, Pop & Ska channel is still up as is Paul,s Beat Ballad Heaven channel ? So god knows what,s happened ?..Fingers crossed they,ll sort it out.
  3. yes he actually passed the day before...a giant of a man in soul music R.I.P. his 1960,s releases & his work with Maze will live forever i,m sure.
  4. This is very sad news indeed..My fondest memory of chris was when i was flogging about 400 45,s and he came round to my house for a gander. He bought the lot that i put in an old suitcase for him to take away in his jag with a pile of "Blues & Soul" mags. My regret was he offered to take me into Nottingham to meet Popcorn Wylie who was on at Hinckley which sadly i couldnt accept, a big regret now years later. When we met up at his gigs we had a laugh about the suitcase.Great lad & Jock that will be missed by this fellow Nottingam native... R.I.P. mate and condolences to his Family...God Bless
  5. yes very sad a true legend!..was playing his motown compilation from 2004 today...what a class act...R.I.P.
  6. Bruce isnt my cup of tea but i respect him as a top performer for what he does. in his defence he was a soul fan in his teens with his m8s and bought lots of 45,s and this album was conceived in lockdown as he wanted to do something totally different. It shows his respect for the music as he highlighted on the Graham Norton show a few weeks back. I always believed the first Soul Demo turned up in Nottingham..(Rob Smiths ?) and discovered by DJ Jonathon way before searling or winstanley, but who knows?
  7. sad news, the guy had a great voice
  8. so very sad to see the passing of this legend...RIP JOE... Grammy award-winning R&B singer Joe Simon has died aged 85, according to reports. The artist, who sang the 1972 hit Power of Love and was sampled by hip hop group OutKast, died on Monday in his hometown near Chicago, US music magazine Billboard said. Simon was known also for US R&B chart-topper The Chokin Kind in 1969 and 1971’s Drowning in the Sea of Love. His 1975 track Get Down, Get Down (Get on the Floor) Simon’s highest entry on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, peaking at number eight.

  10. the first time i encountered people, mainly guys dancing on their own was at the beachcomber club in nottingham 1966. mainly becuse the girls couldnt be arsed to dance as much as the enthusiastic guys! and slowly over te years this seemed to become the norm? came into its own big time at the dungeon/Nottingham-iron door/liverpool-2nd twisted wheel/manchester-whitworth st...as is known the first location was braznose st.
  11. he ,s more into jazz funk than soul m8!
  12. i used to go to a club in Nottingham with John Robertson who played for NFFC...he loved the soul soul sounds then!!! he was an apprentice and we used to go to the slipper club on central avenue, west bridgeford,Nottingham...not a bad dancer then either! not seen him in years after the Glory run...

  20. hi barry, i,m a forest fan (for my sins m8,i know the rowing clubs are still there) LOL! did you know les from redifusion or sherry?
  21. i used to buy my records in the 60,s at SHARMANS on arkwright st,the meadows, and rediffusion, downstairs where les ? was the manager and a great lass called sherry worked. i used to live for saturday mornings to see what was imported! these shops were the only ones importing soul/ska to my recollection well before selectadisc opened up.
  22. not been around that part of city for years. live miles outside now, whats happened to the beachcomber? apartments or a warehouse?
  23. hi lads, bit slow here but reading these threads is bloody fantastic!!!! i went to all these great venues! the dungeon was a special place for me,where i met the late derek allen,a great bloke with a knack for filling floors as a dj years later. i was talking to kev roberts about the beachcomber & dungeon last week in SOUL ON THE COSTA-SPAIN,and mentioned about them in soul folklore! nottingham,my beloved home city is built on bunter sandstone, which made the aforementioned clubs accoustically perfect! a dj,s dream! the dungeon went on to become THE CLUB and is buried under the broadmarsh shopping centre. if i ever won the lotto,i would re-open it up. and i have to agree with earlier threads that if it had stayed open it would have been as big if not bigger than the wheel. anyone know where stu morris is these days? last time i saw him was years back at a forest match.
  24. well constructed article about the BEST northern/jazz/funk jock ever in my humble opinion. years ahead of his time alex
