  1. My tale of selling up, not selling up, selling, giving and regret. Around 15yrs ago I considered selling up, I hadn't played any vinyl for years, the vast majority of my collection was and still is Motown, early sixties , Atlantic, stuff from soul packs, general chart soul from the 70's and early 80's, I didn't think I had anything of great value , a bloke I met in my local pub a few months earlier showed an interest , came and had a look at the records said he'd make me an offer, I got cold feet went to his house to tell him I'd changed my mind ,he wasn't in but his wife said he'd be very disappointed he had just drawn out two grand, far more than I expected to be offered. Move on to about 7 yrs ago (which is frightening in itself a it seems like yesterday) I needed money for a holiday, a good mate and respected Dj came and had a look ,not wanting to fall soft again and knowing him to be a genuine guy I told him to take what he wanted and give me a fair price, I was happy with what I got even though I had no idea what I had sold, sold some more to another Dj mate and regrettably gave some to another. Move on again to two years ago and illness meant I had time on my hands ,off work for eighteen months I fixed up a deck and started playing my vinyl, this is where the regret kicked in, not so much for the ones sold at least I got something but the ones I gave away. Not a Northern night passes were I don't say to my mate "I used to have that" or "I think I've got that" only to get home and find I've either sold it or given it away. Move on to today and I'm back in the game so to speak, buying vinyl again on a small budget so some of the stuff I sold and would like to own again I can't afford, that small budget has slowly increased as the bug has bitten deeper, thanks to some of the audio threads on here I'm buying a mix new releases, bits and bobs of stuff I've always liked but thought were out of my price range but have been happy to find they aren't. I'm still in a quandary over Ovo, does it matter if I'm only playing them in the house, should I buy stuff on Kent, Outtasight etc when there's enough original releases for the same price that I like, does it really matter, probably not and enough people have told me that. Finally as a believer in Karma, the respected Dj and still a good mate finding out I was buying again has gifted me several great sounds ,as he says you were good to me back then.
  2. I don't know where this rates as regards a jump in price I read the Wants thread on here last week not something I normally do and saw someone was looking for Eula Cooper Try, I thought I'm sure I've got that somewhere, got it in a soul pack back in the day, can't remember ever playing it past the initial don't like that but it's been there gathering dust for years. I was intrigued so looked it up on Discogs and Popsike ,fluctuated over the years from around £80 to the last one sold last Feb for upwards of £400 with an average of around £230. Still no wiser as to the reason for the price, is it a minor rarity or is it being played out, any of you more knowledgeable guys know. Haven't decided what to do with it as I don't like the record but a couple of hundred quid could seriously diminish my wants list.
  3. My mate works in a couple of charity shops and gets some pretty decent British stuff on a regular basis. Trying to find something is a thankless task as he tells me you are up against dealers and collectors with time on their hands who do the rounds of the charity shops sometimes several times a week. It's a case of just being lucky, it's always worth asking have they anything in the back as stuff is brought in all the time. You never know next time it might be your turn to be lucky......we live in hope. I did get a couple of early Expansion cd's the other week, obviously not rare or anything but nice to find in a charity shop.
  4. It looks at home in the Pyrenees, perhaps it hails from there.... I'll get mi coat 😊

  10. This one seemed to have no fear Martyn, we were outside the workshop when the driver waiting for his truck suddenly said where did that come from, when I turned around the bird was perched on one of the parcels, it flew out of the back of the truck onto the drum store roof, sat there for a few seconds then flew back into the truck and perched about two feet behind me on another parcel, I started to talk to it and it flew toward me landing on my shoulder, the apprentice just got the photo before it flew off, when I went inside to show the lads the photo our female mechanic who was working on an engine said it had landed near her ten minutes earlier and been flying around the workshop. I'd have been gutted if it had flown off before Harry the apprentice had the chance to take the photo, I'm sure it will certainly never happen again.
  11. It was quite a fat little thing Steve, I tried to edit the photo so the bird was clearer this was the best I could manage.
  12. Minding my own business repairing a shutter at work today when this little fella flew into the back of the wagon, perched itself on one of the parcels and decided to sit on my shoulder, lucky for me the apprentice was stood outside the truck and just had time to take the photograph before it flew out... and no not as someone has said I'm not wearing a new wig of overdone it with the Grecian 2000 it's a wooly hat
  13. First time at the Ukranain Club Ashton, brilliant night with far too many tunes new to me to pick out one though as a prodigious downloader they played a fair few I knew as well, wonderful to hear them played out at a venue instead of a cd or laptop. Managing to dance to three records on the trot for the first time after my heart bypass, sadly not managed it since. Rediscovering the joy of playing vinyl at home . (downside reading the "what system do you have" thread and finding I'm probably ruining my records on sub standard equipment, just as well I have nothing of any great value as the funds aren't there to upgrade.
  14. On the subject of demos don't know if this adds anything to the pot or will even be of interest, in the early seventies I dated for alas too short a time lass who's older brother was a Dj at the Nevada in Bolton. She knew I collected Soul records and on my one and only visit to her house she let me into the caravan her brother used in the garden, can't remember why the caravan was there but that's by the by, the floor of said caravan was littered with demos of all genre's of music, literally hundreds of records. She told me to help myself, not having dated her for too long I showed admirable restraint thinking I would get a second chance of picking some stuff. I came away with several JayBoy Demos, a few Motown green and whites and some deep soul stuff by the likes of Dee Dee Warwicke and Irma Thomas on Atco and Atlantic respectively. From memory the Nevada was a general dance hall and skating rink so whoever sent out the demos wasn't concerned with sending out just the potential pop hits of the day as I think it very doubtful either Dee Dee or Irma would have got played there.

  16. Bit of background and a lot of rambling before getting into the soul,I love music, always have done from an early age, we always had brass instruments in the house as my Dad played in several brass bands, one of big regrets not learning to play myself even more so as my uncle was bandmaster in the local Salvation Army and used to teach, watching variety shows on Tv with my mum, I used to enjoy Petula Clarke oddly especially when she sang in French, Frankie Vaughan, Tommy Bruce, Dusty etc. Having older brothers and sisters who listened to the pop music of the day and bought a few records introduced me to the Small Faces, Kinks etc. Got a guitar for my tenth birthday and like a lot of things in my life I just didn't have the will to progress further than pissing about, always been a problem applying myself with any conviction to anything. Reading this thread before setting off on my walk to work one morning this week then listening to my mp3 on the short walk several tunes came up that brought me back to this thread, strangely one in particular which also took me back over fifty years was from Mireille Mathieu singing in French, hadn't a clue what she was singing about but the emotion in her voice was magnificent followed by Bettye Swanns slow version of This Old Heart Of Mine in which in her spoken intro she says something along these lines (we all know this song but do we really listen to the words) this led me to ponder on how much attention we pay to the lyrics in a song or is the emotion enough, and what it is I love about a particular tune. Is it the voice, the instrumentation, a particular section of a tune, by this time my head was full of what I was going to write in reply to this thread. Days later most of that has gone. So what is it I love about the music. It would be easier to say what I don't like, there's tunes from every facet of the music I love bar one, I can't explain it very well but it's a particular group harmony sound that just does not do it for me. What does it for me, where do I start, the brass, not only the sound but seeing a brass section in a live band swing from side to side , up and down (you know what I mean) has always brought the biggest smile to my face. Only the other night switching the tv over and catching the end of Nigella cooks something or other my ears pricked up, could that be Jr Walker, don't know that tune, out with Shazam, Tally Ho, must have that somewhere and I did, it was like I'd won the lottery (well not quite). On my walk to work Earl Wright ,not heard it in ages then comes the Sax break, brilliant. Julian Covay, the whole thing, music, lyric, voice, a record I've never owned but always loved and maybe that's another thing I love about it all, the wanting, no doubt over the years I could have obtained the record scores of times but does the not owning increase the pleasure of hearing it, (proper rambling now). Basically I could have answered with one word EVERYTHING, apologies for rambling and possibly not even answering the bloody question. No doubt I'll be back to press the edit button.

Finally back to work after long illness so still have to be careful with the pennies hence this cheapie dropping on the matt this week
  18. Satin for me, like Scootboy I prefer the absence of the LaLa's in the backing, anyone tell me which was the original release and why the Satin one is titled differently and why the variations on writing credits other than Floyd Smith.

Cheers Joey, the one you mentioned is probably the one I was thinking of, as for not lasting long that has jogged my memory, seem to remember my mate foolishly wearing his on a scooter ride thinking he'd look cool , yes it rained with predictable results, cheers for the reply.

Question not just for Joey ,this has bugged me for years as no one else seems to remember these, probably a memory thing and age related, does anyone remember Levi's bringing out a white jacket, could have been a similar style to the denim ones but not sure ,the fabric though had a feel and texture akin to paper, damn sure my mate bought one from Stone Dri in Bury, Thompsons Arms Ken, I remember going in there after seeing The Temptations at the Free Trade Hall I think, waiting for the bus home, a very nice young man came round selling a paper, my girlfriend at the time asked what's he selling bless her, I told her I'm pretty sure it Isn't the War Cry.
