  1. As Frankie says thanks for taking the time to post, be sad to see it end. Merry Christmas to you!
  2. New to me what a great tune, cheers,
  3. I've bought very little for many years and as my taste has changed what I'd like to play now I don't own so I'm left with what I've got after selling plenty over that period, so mine would have to go like this. Joe Tex You'd Better Believe it Undisputed Truth You Got the Love I Need James Brown Hey America inst. Linda Jones Can't Stop Lovin'My Baby Emotions Stealing Love Lack of Afro Recipe for Love Johnny Moore You fixed It The Nite -Liters Cherish Every Precious Moment Dynamites Still Can't get You Out of My Heart Lorraine Ellison I've Got My Baby Back Inez and Charlie Foxx Baby Drop a Dime Lenis Guess Workin for My Baby Brooks and Jerry I Got What It Takes Metros Time Changes Things Connie Francis it's Gonna Take Me Some Time and that folks is why I never make a Dj
  4. If you are unsure have you considered a temporary halfway house that could help you decide and could also find the right dog for you, my local animal sanctuary is always on the lookout for dog walkers, if there was one near you I'm sure they would be more than happy with an extra volunteer .On the plus side you'd get interaction with different dogs maybe bonding with one particular dog which you could end up giving a home to. You may also find having a dog isn't for you saving you the heartache of finding out too late after you have gone and bought a dog.
  5. Now you've thrown that thought into the mix I'll have to stick with Johnny Moore You Fixed it For Me, either that or suffer the wrath of she who must be listened to
  6. That's the phrase I was searching for in my post Robb, well put Sir!!
  7. That's a great question a bit like name your top three, what would be there one day could be gone the next, I've been giving it some thought since you first posted and still haven't come up with an answer. I do know it would be down to gut instinct as I held each record in my hand slowly whittling the pile down , I can see in my minds eye piles of records in line gradually reducing, keep to the right, sell to the left. There's now tunes spinning in my head, Gladys Knight Just Walk in Shoes, memories of a magic night in Manchester early seventies, Look What You Done to My Heart rescued from the tip by my mates Dad who was a dustman, Moody Woman ,Little Misunderstanding, Brooks and Jerry being lifted out of a brown box in Ralphs Records aghhhh..... I've gotta stop thinking about it

Found it on Popsike Vance, not a site I've looked at before, sixty quid in 2011 so must be a small profit there somewhere.

Just about to leave a charity shop last week after wading through for the second time last weekend a raft of Jim Reeves and James Last albums the woman behind the counter placed a bag in front of me saying "noticed you looking through the records have a look at these they've just come in", I reached in with the first lot out being some 78's, hoping someone on here might be of help as the first one was Sam Cooke Only Sixteen in as someone quotes " it's birth sleeve". I've asked a few people and looked on the net without luck ,don't know if it's collectable or worth sod all, anyone any idea? Rest of the bag was.........yes more flippin Jim Reeves and James Last.
  10. Always loved this one, thanks for posting , I can't recall ever hearing it in the last few years at least.
  11. Hey no apologies needed great that you take the time to post the results and much appreciated.
  12. Which in far fewer words is what I was clumsily trying to say
  13. I think you make a very valid point going off my own experience. I have never really been aware of record prices until I joined this site, my knowledge has increased thanks to the guys on here though I'm largely still in the dark as to what most of my remaining collection is actually worth, not much I suspect mostly in the £5 to twenty quid bracket I would guess. I suppose a few years ago I could have gone on various sites and checked current prices but as we know today that probably would not be a good guide to follow. A couple of examples to illustrate my point, after hearing on YouTube a Johnny Taylor I quite liked I looked on Ebay to see how much it goes for, turns out it was the b side to Disco Lady, having that on the shelf under the stairs I dug it out along with about fifteen others that I thought I'd check out the B sides plus a few A sides too. One of the records I checked out on You tube was by the Delfonics which from memory I thought was going to be uptempo but turned out to be one of their ballads, when I saw the post was one of Manships I thought well it must have some worth which turned out to be £15 quid four years ago. I'd have happily sold it for a quid if asked, whether Manship got £15 quid or not is by the by, my point being I placed no value at all on it .Another I dug out was Spaceark Do What You Can Do, not a tune I particularly care for, don't know where it came from so out of interest looked it up on Discogs. Were it not for the knowledge I've gained on here regarding the current unrealistic high prices I'd have been a happy man, I would have looked no further than the one that is for sale with an asking price 5p short of £100, being a tad wiser I clicked on the one for sale to find a low price of £30 and a high of £70., again personal taste without checking I'd have been happy to get a tenner for it never mind the £30 low. Further to illustrate your point my second thought was it legit or a pressing, if it had been one of my kids hoping my records were worth a fortune they would have been unaware of pressings so maybe would have just slapped everything of ebay as originals. A case of a little knowledge being a dangerous thing as they say. I think you are right in what you say that there are lots of people out there sitting on collections, not necessarily large collections totally unaware of the value of what they have stored in the loft Back in the seventies I had several mates who were into "soul music" who bought much the same as me, I know for a fact the majority of them lost interest in the music but for whatever reason didn't want to sell their records. I haven't seen some of those mates since those days but I wouldn't mind betting they held on to the records for sentimental reasons if nothing else.
  14. Great memories, saw Graham Central Station in Manchester on the Warner Bros showcase tour that included Tower of Power and the Doobie Bros, last minute decision to go to the first night got free tickets from Warner Bros outside the Free Trade Hall, five rows from the front, Cheers for posting
  15. Possibly the wrong forum, just came across this on YouTube, not sure how well known it is probably well known but it made me smile, mods feel free to remove if deemed unsuitble https://youtu.be/iA64mhwfoZc
  16. This is more a view of how you might feel after selling rather than any kind of advice, I have never been more aware of the prices of what I have or have had than I am now but for me the price of the record has never been a factor. I've sold records in batches over the years when circumstances dictated, new cricket bat for the son etc when money was really tight, later selling because they weren't getting played. The taking of pictures is a great idea, I'd love to be able to remember what I once had, the first time I sold anything it was to someone who I thought I was doing a favour thinking he had no idea like me of prices, turns out he was well aware he was ripping me off and got more than a few originals that now go for big money, if only we knew then what we know now . Second time I sold was to a good mate who only wanted British, I now wish I'd done the picture thing back though obviously the technology wasn't around to make it as easy as it is now. Third time was not that long ago to a very good mate, I wasn't concerned about getting market value as I knew the records were going to be used in his Dj's sets, I didn't actually look at what he bought because I knew I'd have emotional connection with certain tunes and go through the no I'll keep that scenario. My only advice would be hold a few back, the ones with a strong emotional memory, time or place. You don't say whether you are still active on the scene, if you are be prepared for a tug at the heartstrings when you hear something played you once had. It might just be me but not an event goes by where I don't find myself saying I think I had that . I get the occasional wish I'd never sold anything but then again I never got a large sum to soften the blow, if you sell piecemeal you could end up sitting on a collection of stuff that no one really wants after all the good stuff has gone, with that in mind you might realise a better overall price going with a dealer as the will take the whole lot. I was once offered three grand for mine, baring in mind I didn't know prices and assumed most where worth only a pound or two I was quite surprised at the offer, he actually got the money out of the bank but a sleepless night had me changing my mind. I now wish I'd taken the money as I have going on for eight or nine hundred something or nothing records sat under the stairs which get an occasional airing consisting of general 70's chart soul, Motown, pressings plus a few worth forty quid or so. I don't envy you but I wish you well and hope you achieve a worthwhile sum from the sale, get a small keeper box for those tunes that hold something special in your heart, it will soften the blow in the coming months should you regret selling.

  18. Fabulous voice, great record.
  19. Only found this recently trawling YouTube , thankfully haven't had cause to wallow in someone else's misery since I met my wonderful fiancé though there were many times prior to that when this would have got a spin
  20. Thelma Jones I'd Rather Leave While I'm In Love
  21. Still on the fence Vance and the grass is no greener on one side or tother, my heart is still pulling for the 60's don't know why I'm dithering it aint' gonna change the world one way or another, quote made me smile,
  22. Great poll, sorry in advance for the ramble there is a point at the end, really got me thinking, having started my soul journey around 68 seeing the poll my gut instinct was the 60’s probably down to being young and the memory of discovering all the fabulous tunes for the first time, the excitement and sheer joy of finding new tunes and swapping discoveries with mates not realising that feeling would never really fade, the excitement of hearing something that blows my mind lasts to this day. It seemed back then nothing could be better, there was a wealth of back catalogue to swim through, tunes recommended by older mates who were starting to go to clubs, listening to the Mike Raven show etc. I still get a curious tingle when Clarence Carter does that laugh on Looking for a Fox .Recently after selling and giving away some of my collection I thought I’d better initiate a keepers box which turned out to be quite an eye opener, I have long since got rid of anything of value so that wasn’t a consideration and would not have been anyway so my choices came down to what memories the record invoked, several went in the box purely because holding the record made me smile, end result a pretty even mix of 60’s and later stuff including stuff that made the charts, New York City etc which depending on your point of view may or may not be soulful but that's another question. So to the poll, well I find myself undecided, sure I think there was a lot of pretty middle of the road stuff in the 70’s as the production became more sophisticated, less earthy as Liam says but there’s still a shit load of soulful stuff there. If I did it semi scientifically and listed my favourite artists there would definitely be more 60’s there than any other period but would that make it more soulful, not sure, my heart wants to hit the 60’s button but my head is saying Whoa there, what about Al Green, Millie Jacksons Caught Up saga, Aretha etc. Where’s the both equally button!
  23. Was that the thread suggested and started by Len where he asked for recommendations as to who people would like to hear about, think it covered three people one if my memory serves me right was Nev Wheerey another I think was Ted Massey, it died a death for some reason , some great stories came out, maybe Len will read this thread consider re starting it.
  24. Sorry for your loss, it's a hard time but I'm sure your memories will keep you warm, I was just thinking about my own mum before I logged on as I cleaned the cooker, she loved a clean white cooker top so every time I clean mine I think how she must be smiling down saying "good lad"
  25. I might be being a bit thick here but checking this out on the old You Tube saw the Frederick Hymes faster version which I knew and noticed on the record it is credited as being written by Frederick but on the Tonny Hymes it is credited as written by Tonny, being they have the same surname and sound kinda the same though I'm not 100%sure on that could they be the same person?
