  1. I have to say I find this post rather dictatorial and insulting to many who buy soul records. It's up to them what format they choose to buy their music on. I happen to be one of those people you dont think exist, who are buying 7''s of certain records they purchased as 12''s, the reason I say certain records is because not all 12''s have an instrumental break that adds any musical listening pleasure to that which exists on the 7''. There are shed loads of indie logo 12''s which had a decent song and vocalist, but because of the low budget and drum programing the instrumental break was shite! So why would you not want the 7'', folks dont just buy records in order to do some amazing mix in a club, they play them at home very often alongside something that does not have the same bpm. There are of coarse many fantasticaly produced twelves on both major and indie logo's which I could do with going on even longer if i'm honest. I love the recent joey negro mix of Patti labelles ' it's allright with me', it could go on for 12 minutes and I would still be happy. Please dont tar every record with the same brush, assuming it has to be better on a 12''. Not forgeting there are several on seven which are in fact the same duration as the 12''!. I have over the years listened to some great dj's mixing in clubs, however they often managed to do it with records where the most soulfull vocal part was in fact at the end, but because they were hell bent on a seemless mix we got to hear half the record (might as well played a 7'') and missed the best bit out. Before you ask, the reason I never got the 7'' in the first place is lots of tracks never came over here on that format, or if they did in very small quantity. Many seem to only show up in small quantity often just as demos.
  2. Same track as Act 111 on Harley, used to play it at downtempo gigs in Norwich a few years back. Nice track. Andy
  3. I may still have the lp if that is any use, but would need time to look, sorry I do not have or have seen the 45. Andy
  4. Played it at a gig in Norwich last week, with good interest shown. Hopefully this excellent background info and promotional drive will give it the exposure it deserves, nice one. Andy

  7. I personaly don't get out to as many gigs as I should, however if I get even the slightest wiff that boots are being played at any soul night then I don't go, for the simple I want to listen to interesting sets made up of music thats inovative, new to me, 'not heard that for a while', something that stimulates my little soul cells. That policy applies to all genres with me, northern, crossover, sweet, deep and off cause new releases .People who play boots just dont have that in their locker, in many cases the reason they are playing a boot is because their knowledge is so backward they failed to buy an original ,when in many cases it was cheap. So as bad as they are, it's not the boot that's the real problem , but the person playing it. I would hate to think how many so called soul collectors are buying records simply to dj with. As Chalky mentioned, far to many second rate soul gigs run by guys who are also spinning and to far up their own arse to go and listen to someone else, in reality they want to listen to themselves with a pat on the back to boot, excuse the pun.
  8. I feel very privileged to have his Gala 45 ' In search of love'. To my ears one of the truly great falsetto lead deep soul masterpieces, sadly overlooked in deep soul circles . Thankyou Ronnie. R.I.P
  9. Not sure who was lead on the broadway Express material, but Lloyd Parkes was in the group. Lloyd was also in the Blue Notes, the Emanons and also the Epsilons along with Mcfadden and Whitehead. Which reminds me, I have an unreleased promotional tape of Cecil Parker material I need to convert on to CD AS i have not listened to it!.
  10. Many a great singer on those Philly logo's like TSOP, WMOT unfortunatly lived in the shadow of Teddy Pendergrass. David Morris and Booker Newbury from the group Sweet Thunder also spring to mind.
  11. Yes, the performance Morris managed with the Attractions on 'Some of your time' is just class. Good shout, pity his output was more limited than some of the superb artists mentioned above like Levi. Had best flag up Bobby Womack before I forget. I have always enjoyed the well rounded tones of Garland Green, JJ Barnes and Mike James Kirkland (Bo Kirkland). Andy
  12. I could never get on with that Karen Striblin version, those backing singers sound like they have fallen down a mine shaft desperatly trying to get some ones attention.
  13. Great little 45. Several copies at various grades on discogs.
  14. Great group, however it would seem their first 45 'I'm still your friend' has not been included, pitty as it was IMO one of their best, so not really the entire catalog. I do hope the copies of 'Mellow music' are not identical to the copy I have, as it's no different to being robbed.
  15. If i got fifty quid for every person I know who back in the eightees used to call certain records disco but now have them in their play boxes because they have a recognised value of over a grand I would not have to work for several weeks. Piss poor appreciation of black music and no mind of their own. Just using soul music for braging rights.
  16. I'm sure Rod Dealove used to play ' The harder you love', but do not recall what format it was on. Great track. Andy
  17. Have you actually listened to all the LP? Only one track has heavy breathing and muttering, it's the first track on side one, which in my opinion is not very good and I have never had by the Moments. Not all the Moments original versions do I prefere either. all though in general most would accept the productions are much better, the version of 'This old house' is in my opinion is far to over the top by the Moments for the sad subject matter on offer. Much of this material was recorded by other All platinum outfits anyway, of which I am sure many on here prefere different takes. Categorically saying something is better like some leading authority is not helpfull, let them choose.Vanity projects on others material is not very odd, it's relatively common. The original poster of the thread was discussing the authenticity or the origin of the press not the music held within.
  18. I have managed to find the LP, however it looks the same as all the ones on popsike. Discogs usually identifies differences between originals and re-issues, but nothing. If your friend on facebook knows the difference (assuming there is one) please let me know. Thickness of the jacket is sometimes a clue, but i'm in the dark as much as you. Andy
  19. Had a brief look this morning, but unable to find it. Sorry I am not able to be of more help. If that inner sleeve is not the correct one anyway then maybe it was not re- issued after all. I'm a little pissed off I cant find it as there were a couple of tracks I would like to catch up on.
  20. The copy I have does not have one of those plastic Mofi inner sleeves as shown in the photo. That company was not founded untill 77 and were mainly involved with audiofile reproduction ie re-issues. The original LP came out in 75. I was not aware there was a re- issue, but it looks as if there was. Some half tidy sweet soul on there.
  21. Bobby hutton 'Come see whats left of me' Philips white demo m- 200 ON HOLD Stone wall classic , of which there are few in this kinda nick. Jacqueline jones 'A frown on my face' Loadstone m- 400 Crossover of the highest order, hardly ever being offered for sale in recent years in this condition. Prices in uk pounds (our keyboards gone TU and unable to do a pound sign) PAYPAL FOR PAYMENT , FULL REFUND IF NOT SATISFIED. Thanks for looking. Andy
  22. I find many of these boots rather amusing, as they seem to be 50 times rarer than the original, especialy some of the beach/Carolinas stuff. There is also a boot of ' Look on the good side' by the Invitations, which is probably several thousand times rarer than the original. Never seen the offender shown above though, how weird.
  23. Yes, Jay Player was the big title at the time. however Benvik did not use that design Excusively, I have a 45 by First Class on that logo titled ' Love is real', however that's just a plain yellow. There are also other labels that used exactly the same design like Macdad records in New Jersey, so perhaps there is a connection there with the First Class group?.
  24. Lonnie Hill ' Cold cold winter in the ghetto' on the Urban Sound logo would seem a reasonable choice or Herman Atterways ' Merry christmas girl' on the B.E.T.A logo. Andy
  25. Really enjoyed that Futures ' Who would have ever thought' ? acetate and the Mighty Sceptors sounded great. Great stuff. Andy
