Still Diggin

I find many of these boots rather amusing, as they seem to be 50 times rarer than the original, especialy some of the beach/Carolinas stuff. There is also a boot of ' Look on the good side' by the Invitations, which is probably several thousand times rarer than the original. Never seen the offender shown above though, how weird.

Yes, Jay Player was the big title at the time. however Benvik did not use that design Excusively, I have a 45 by First Class on that logo titled ' Love is real', however that's just a plain yellow. There are also other labels that used exactly the same design like Macdad records in New Jersey, so perhaps there is a connection there with the First Class group?.

Lonnie Hill ' Cold cold winter in the ghetto' on the Urban Sound logo would seem a reasonable choice or Herman Atterways ' Merry christmas girl' on the B.E.T.A logo. Andy

Another fine example being the Pinch of perfection ' All thats left is memories' on the G&W logo, as stated above carrying the QCA pressing runout.

The track I was on about is from 79 on that purple/ white reactivated logo distributed by fantasy. It would have thought it was cut around 79 as it does have a disco vibe. John manship has a copy for sale and the vocal is very similar to my ears, However as you say the Hot Sauce lady is also from that range.

Often wondered who the Rhonda 'Touch me up' on Stax actually was, as her vocal is rather similar to the Rhonda Davis on Duke.

Lets not forget the Tex- mex connection to our various associated scenes as well. In fact the 45 by Joe Jama 'My life' on the optimum logo was one of the most wanted and biggest northern tracks several years back. With groups like Sunny and the sunliners 'Should I take you home' on Keylock , Dimas111 ' I won't love you again' on Clown being firm favorites with the low- rider Scene. While it could be argued that in many respects the latin influence on the tracks mentioned is minimal, it is without doubt a hybrid of mexican and black american music.

Anyway is it just me or does the lead singer sound remarkably like the King Moses fellow who recorded 'I've got this feeling' on Pet?. Or if it's not him and someone knows who it is it would be nice to know. Woops just realized it states Charles Mclintyre on the 45. Still could be the guy on the pet 45 I suppose. Andy

Perhaps the reason it was described as latin is because they were Mexicans from east LA. I can hear a lot of latin in that record. Even that opening brass known to every man and his dog on the northern scene is played in a key and style associated with latin music not black american.

Really good read, but some what bitter sweet in a way. One night in the early 80's at clifton hall in Rotheram there was a guy who had a small batch of records for sale, all northern classics, but records that even back then you hardly ever had a sniff at. From memory he had the Jades, Little Joe Roman, Lynn Vanardo, one of the Amy- bell 45's Bernard Williams or Morris Chestnut and yes That Inspirations first Version along with a couple of other things. I Took the Lynn Vanardo. All though I did not ask myself, i'm sure someone else asked about the Inspirations 45 and it was not an arm and a leg. Now had I took that one instead of the Vanardo 45 and kept hold of it, then maybe I could get my dodgy knee fixed with out the pathetic wait with the NHS!. Some great memories from the past, not too sure about that one.

Are, somebody with the same opinion on stafford plays as me!, now that's unusual. The 'no melody and poor lyrics bit' did ring a bell.

John Anderson had a bin back in the day, it was full of scratched 45's he would not even think about listing, with many titles fifty times rarer than the Constellations 45 being talked about, with many in considerably better shape as well. He sold mint copies of that for £15 to every man and his dog when I was going up there, so I have no idear who thinks it's a grade A rarity. I was looking on discogs the other night and was shocked at just how many different titles there were of 45's that were once easy to find, but only have one seller listing it at a crazy price. Given the number of US sellers on there, maybe we should think again at how cynical we should get with regards to how much others are prepared to pay for records only fit for framing on the wall.

I seem to remember reading some time ago that Bobby had infact passed away. However the obituary mentioned above has a birth date of 1947, however discogs has a birth date of 1954 which ties in a little better with the start of most artists recording deals, ie Mainline records ' This cant be happening to me' 1975, later picked up by Avco. Although discogs has no listing for the Mainline 45 only Avco, I am pretty sure it was his first as I have a copy. So maybe the obituary above is a different person? Andy

I am not sure where the book is now, but I remember seeing a member listing for the group on Kent, I believe one side was ' Freedom is justice' or something like that. Pretty sure he was in that group, not the Fantasy or Minit outfits. I will have a look over the weekend. Andy
