The Brits
I understand your viewpoint Ian but since when was the NS or soul scene about commerciality? It's about uncommerciality isn't it, the music that doesn't fit in with the mainstream and challenges the listener and gives more back, creates passion, offers more. So what if a tune sells a million, Phil Collins sells more than that on a bad day I expect. If it's a gateway to truly great soul music all good, but let's not be fooled into believing that its anything other than that as it is a pop record that will be about as memorable as all the rest of the pop shite that had its 5 minutes then disappeared thank god. It's not exactly Mel Britt is it, but it could lead to people hearing Mel Britt for the first time and going 'wtf is this'. Everyone starts somewhere and should be welcomed, but not at the expense of a watered down soul scene catering for pop music, when it loses what it is all about. It will survive. Hard to get the point over without sounding patronising or elitist, which is not the intention at all, just the opposite. IMHO again of course m8, hope to catch up soon for a beer!

The Brits
I've kept my mouth firmly shut til now but... There is absolutely zero common ground between 'happy' and 'move on up' Ian. Happy is not even a soul record, it's just another pop record with a motown-style beat if you like, just as Culture Club 'church of the poison mind' or Vanessa Paradis 'Be My Baby' were. I really can't see how it represents anything to do with soul music other than it's the most commercial end of it possible. It's become almost sacrilegious to not like this recording and you are deemed as some kind of killjoy if you don't want to jump up and down and sing it at the top of your voice. I'd rather listen to the many new releases over the last 10 years and more that shit all over it from a great height personally. The NS connection is a marketing mans dream come true, I'm really not at all interested in that angle, the scene existed before it and the Brits and it will afterwards. Young people getting into soul music - fantastic, it's great music. Pop music masquerading as soul, no thanks IMHO Cheers Sutty

How did they not use the line "I think its time to go, Nad"

Sean Oliver
Ok. I just played the Canadian 12 listed as 'can I flow' and... It plays 'Funny Love'!, so it appears that the label and sleeve are misprinted!

Sean Oliver
My point was that there is no UK release, Boomtang is a Canadian label/production co out of Toronto. Whether they did 2 different issues/promos is a different matter I guess, but what is more revealing from their website is they probably are not that bothered as they produced 'the hamster dance' and made a packet ;)))) oh oh and they are the same people that did 'love trip' which I never connected. And Charlene Smith 'feel the good times' so I have 3 12's by them ( and one isn't the hamster dance)

Never happened, numerous people have tried to amend discogs to no avail John, it's an error

Portable Record Players
What you need is a professional setup, such as mine for example. Not only can you play your 45s on it, it's got a built in centre adaptor that pops up, and you can tape them as well if you splash out on the tape deck. Just make sure you ask everyone in the room to be quiet while you do it and you definitely don't want anyone eating crisps within 20 feet

That label has so obviously been removed, there's even small tears left on it, what a scammer!

Northern Silent Niter?
oh dear, talk about a misconception. The concept of a silent disco is that people listen to the DJ through wireless cans, not their own iPod ROFL

Engraved Messages On Vinyl Out Tracks
Scratching in the run off is done at the time of the cut by the cutting engineer, the lacquer he has cut is then sent off for mastering at the pressing plant. It has nothing to do with the pressing plant or the value of the record, it's whoever was in the cutting room at the time that asked for the words or symbols to be scratched in. Often it's just the catalogue number to identify the master lacquer. A pressing plant may then have their own stamper that also goes in the run off to identify where it was pressed. Porkys Prime Cuts is one of the most well known UK scratches as stated above. George Peckham was a top man in the cutting room... If you booked it before the lunchtime pub session, after which it could go either way Cheers Sutty

Top Tips For 2014
https://youtu.be/R6Qjbxzl99Q back in ye oldene days when I was foolishly booked to play records to an unsuspecting public, this was something I spun occasionally and people danced. I've done my research and nobody has ever mentioned it in this forum and there is no googleable content of any other claims to it being 'massive' anywhere. It's a cheap LP on Buddah, and I think it's got the longest title of any record I own... 'God has blessed our hands... A musical tribute to a people's struggle for equality'. And most bizarrely, he's got Rance Allen playing guitar and not singing on it. so there cheers Sutty

James Brown Tracks
and the instrumental is on 'slaughters big rip off' under the title 'straight ahead' to complete the trio cheers Sutty

Info Wanted - London Record Shops / Markets
Music and goods exchange is over priced with bad condition generally since they closed the soul and dance and moved into that small space. Music exchange in soho has a section of about 8 shite common albums and no 45s. Selecta disc is new releases only. Sounds of the universe is new release with a small selection or originals downstairs that are not particularly exciting, and they don't change that often, I've seen the same lps in there for 5 years+ unsold. The only place left on berwick at is the reopened reckless records but it's a shadow of its former self. Used to enjoy an hour or two wandering round nothing hill and soho, I don't usually bother going there at all anymore, it's a waste of time unless you are super lucky, which I've not been for a few years and nobody I know has either. Flashback is worth a look but their 'filing system' is a bit odd, but nice people and you can turn stuff up, but you need to sent some time in there as there's a lot of tat. Be prepared to get on your knees and dig it's a good old fashioned record shop. I'm afraid the days of finding gems in good condition at a reasonable price in Central London are mostly gone now, not surprising considering their rates and bills alone must be extortionate, Sorry! Cheers Sutty

Casino Classics Cc5 - Blue Vinyl : Offers ? ? ?
When Okeh records signed Major Lance in 1962 with the belief that 'colored music on vinyl is the future' they certainly never saw how wrong they would get it, for clearly it was 'music on colored vinyl' that was the future. We must express our thanks and respect to Eric Morecambe who later made sense of the situation with his infamous 'all the right words, but not necessarily in the right order'. If I could predict one outcome from all this, it's that this thread won't stay open long enough for the sale to go through

Future Of Northern Soul
Surely not Portugal Ian, that hotbed of tasteful inspirational soul we have all grown to love over the years! Good to see Ronaldo nominated for another Grammy for his fancy footwork as well, they'll be wanting to join the EU next and turn up in their 1000's at Dover claiming our benefits and spunking it all on white lightning and cheap mp3s of chart-topping northern soul music whilst dressed as extras from a Jackie fashion shoot. I'll give it six months tops before our airwaves are irreversibly poisoned by this tripe and the government imposes forced riverdancing for under 12s

John Manship's Tease Auction
Remarkable, the record was passed onto DW in the late 80s from RS who had previously got it from Robin in the early 90's, yet it's been in the same collection for 30+ years, which puts it before 1983 and around the time it was first discovered by someone else before Robin had it, so changing hands several times yet still remaining in the possession of one person and going back in time as well as forward simultaneously Or something. The fact it managed to traverse time itself several times makes it a unique item for any budding H.G. Wells fan, i'm in and so is Professor Brian Cox! ;)

The Motown 7S Box Set: Rare And Unused
Downloads are shoddy, no tagging of artists or box title, no artwork, no thought at all Records are all in there and play fine but try telling that to my iphone!
