  1. I agree with Neville’s comments on the fake groups although I did not get into Soul until 1968/9. My first fanzines were Home of the Blues and Collectors Soul. Some were possibly back issues. Can’t recall. Interesting to read Bill Millar’s views on the fake groups. He was ahead of his time. The Steinways were on in Glasgow in 1968 as the Platters as per the advert. Real surprise as the Odeon was our biggest venue. I only heard of them many years later via the NS scene. Great double sider. Who were they touring with at that time? obviously not singing the Oliver 45? I got Bandwagon’s autographs in 1969/70 who were good. Only recently discovered that Artie Fullilove had a solo record played on NS scene. Always recall ads in NME for Broken Wheel. seemed to be a lot of Soul music advertised there but don’t recall much discussion about it on here historically. Good to read Charlie Gillett’s comments from back in the day too. Who lived At the Chislehurst, England address. Tony Cummings? Sorry can’t help anymore as I had a long learning curve in front of me regards Soul music is 1969 as it was not like you lucky people down south!
  2. Rightly or wrongly I always liken this to Eddy Hughes “Soul Searcher”. Love both songs. Don Hysong. co wrote the above.
  3. The first time I saw Edwin he sang Spinning Wheel. Yuck.
  4. I visited Detroit nine times between 1999 and 2006 and got to know Frances as a friend really well. She was great company and I’ll never forget her. Shrine? Forget it. “Keep On Loving Me” was recorded from a master tape in “ten minutes” which fits in with a previous post. Frances was going to be a script writer. I still have a copy of one which she wrote. In 2001 she was a tour guide in Detroit. I have some great photos of her and Detroit News people as we toured parts of the city. SoulfulDetroit and the Northern Soul scene taught them a lot about their city. Strange but true.
  5. I saw Ramona at Baker’s in Detroit just over 20 years ago. It is difficult to offer encouragement after such a heinous event. It is difficult to move on but move on you must. Stay strong.
  6. https://soulfuldetroit.com/web07-golden%20world/golden%20world%20story/27-gw-debonaires.htm Graham Finch shared the above photo with SoulfulDetroit. Elsie is in on the right in the Arcadia Roller Ring on Woodward Avenue. Three of their finest moments are attached. Elsie RIP
  7. I am also a fan of Clarence Reid. I enjoyed the Miami Soul movie which included himself, his mate Willie Clarke and others. For those who never saw the film Clarence is featured regularly.. A larger than life Soul Man, Comedian and Blowfly star. https://numerogroup.com/products/eccentric-soul-the-deep-city-label?variant=40259461742790
  8. Frances Nero won a contest in the Fox Theater. The prize was a recording contract at Motown Studios. When she finally got to the studio she was surprised to find that most of the recording was already in place. All she had to do was add her lead vocals to the Originals backing vocals and the band track. I don’t know where “Fight Fire With Fire” fitted in but she told me that her contribution to “Keep On Loving Me” lasted “ten minutes”. Detroit 2002.
  9. Baby Reconsider by Leon Haywood on Soul Sounds.
  10. I recall Brian from my visits to Manchester in 1970. He was always wearing a black crombie and carrying a suitcase of records within the Twisted Wheel club. I remember him dancing in the alcove near the deejay cage with his mates. Never a year has gone by without me thinking of him. Brian thanks for those memories. RIP David
  11. RIP Sly Stone.
  12. Soul Master Edwin Starr
  13. 24 hours Edwin Starr
  14. This one is bit of an enigma for me. Trying to find out if it was released or not is difficult. Perhaps it was a foreign release. Any info would be appreciated. https://youtu.be/XOaj4Z82e-8?si=uPfMddoiyVlttG7r
  15. “Everlasting Love” is a great song as are others in his CV. RIP Mac Gayden
  16. I only saw Ted on youttube deejaying in his back room. A man dedicated to Northern Soul. I also hope that the runts who stole part of his collection get what’s due to them. RIP Ted
  17. The internet has certainly fuelled the epidemic. Some of the prices I see are beyond loopy. Anyway.
  18. Thanks Ken. Can’t find my card, but it’s somewhere. Thought it was before 1975 when I was there but memory is gone.
  19. That’s the one, right next to the pleasure beach.
  20. Can’t answer your question but can add to your list. Blackpool Casino. I remember it as quite a big venue with a deejay on a stage playing what became known as Northern Soul. Outside was a helter-skelter which is still there. Unless memory has slipped. I still have the membership card if anyone wants to see it.
  21. Paul Riser, Homer Banks, Carl Hampton. No wonder this is a great song. RIP Randy Brown.
  22. Roberta recorded two great ballads which went mainstream. RIP.
  23. Jerry Butler RIP
