When talking about Rare Stamps I assume you're talking about JJ Barnes/Steve Mancha. There were two other Rare Stamp LP's released on Stax by Johnnie Taylor and Eddie Floyd, which were more greatest hits. The JJ/SM LP was more of a retrospective collection of singles (on another label) put together as an LP when Don Davis moved to Memphis, during Stax's drive to build an instant LP back catalogue after the end of the Atlantic distribution deal, so it's more of a compilation LP rather than a true LP itself. (Similar to Otis Clay's the Only Way is Up LP). But then you could probably say that about a lot of 60's LP's. I would have thought the LP really came into a format of its own in the 70's. I love Swamp Dogg and some of my favorite LP's are either his or his production, also not for the faint hearted. Doris Duke - I'm a Loser (already mentioned) Doris Duke - Legend in Her Own Time Sandra Phillips - Too Many People In One Bed Swamp Dogg - Total Destruction To Your Mind James Carr - You Got My Mind Messed Up James Carr - A Man Needs A Woman

  5. I don't remember seeing a 7" at the time, thought it just came out as a 12" EP with a couple of Lyn Collins tracks on the other side.
  6. Following on from the Budweiser theme the Hotliners – Cold Hearted is a great dance tune. This was the decade of the drum box and it did detract the soul element for quite a few tunes and IMO the better quality soul releases were either mid-tempo or ballads. The major labels IMO were also getting a bit samey and smaltzy, with the worst being Roberta Flack and Peabo Bryson - Tonight I Celebrate My Love. The heart of Southern soul was still beating after lying dormant during the disco years with Malaco, Ichiban and other independents that Soul Bowl, Record corner, later Voices picked up and the UK based labels releasing/leasing new USD product throughout the 80's need to be given credit too. Some more of my Favourites: Randy Wilson – Something Inside – Regal (Patience – The other side was a Soul Sam spin) Odyssey & Co – Whisper Away – Cam Eric Rapier – Can't Stop Dreaming – Key Note William Stuckey – Girl, You Got Me On The Run – ARTX Trudy Lynn – Bring The Beef Home – Jam-Stone Ed Cornelius – Love Making In Your Eyes – GB Int Charles Wilson – Trying To Make A Wrong Thing Right – Alley Cat Chuck Roberson – Cautious Love – Blue Song Glaze – Promises – Rivertown Millionaires – Don't Mess With My Love – Ardent Tyrone Burrell – Memories – CFM Pep Brown – This Good Thing That I've Got – Walden Jimmy Taylor - Jealous(y) – RSP Waters – What's On Your Mind – Water Wheel James (JD) Wilkerson – Gotta Live Our Own Love Story – Aramus Junie – You Must Go On – Pharoahs J Reddick – When You Call My Name – Alcove Randy Brown – Are You Lonely – 3 Way Sonny Bey - Share Your Life - Morock Harold Daniels – Don't Snatch It Back – Southern Tracks Roosevelt Carter – All Night Love Affair – Ola Stinger J – Pretty Face – Chance Lee Morris' three Lee & Co singles – Weak Man, I Can't believe Your Loving Me & I Got Played On Bobby Finch – Get A Hold Of Yourself - Bevnik Lee Shot Williams - Every Man Loves A Woman - O'ona Sammy (Acuna) - I Never Found a Girl - SLY Side Show - You Are The One For Me - Trey Sonny Holly - Cheating Aint Now Good - Cash Money Roy C - She's Gone - 3 Gems Phil Flowers - Stay A While - ICI Larry Bufford - I Think I'm Gonna Be Blue - Watchman

  8. The Jo Armsted LP was discussed a while ago and it seems that consensus was that it was allocated a number but not released due to the troubles at Stax. I think she had the masters or something as the releases on her Preacher Rose label were from those sessions. There was also other tunes from the Truth sessions on her CD Red Hot such as Steppin Stones... Acording to Barry Fowden's web site here is the track listing 1. Won't You Join The Band (On My Caravan) 2. Ride Out The Storm 3. Stumblin' Blocks, Steppin' Stones (What Took Me So Long) 4. Got My Taste 5. Give A Little Loving 6. I'm Living In A Song 7. There Is No Love (Send It Up) 8. I Got The Vibes/ 9. Say Thank You Tonite.
  9. I'm actually expecting "Love and Jealousy" to come through the door as Seans entry in this swap. A lot easier than going through the process of burning them all via iTunes :D
  10. £80 - £150 which is the highest its been.
  11. There's some information about them in this fantastic gospel blog https://blog.justmovi...ember-when.aspx
  12. I have thought a bit about posting in this thread as I didn't want to show that I was biased in any way as all of these CD's are top notch, but I want to comment on the two Southern Soul CDs. In my opinion they're two of the best compilations that have come out and I don't say that lightly, even in the light of Kent's: Stax, Goldwax, XL/SOM and Fame projects or other labels earlier digging into the Hi vaults. With a backbone of Hi recordings they're both a great mix of known and less obvious tunes which for me actually shows people what soul is all about. Full marks to Mr.Hampsey with his choice of some fantastic tunes. The mixing of rare and common has always fitted well with me as it should always be about the quality of the soul rather than rarity or fashion. I'm ashamed to say that I actually forgot how good The Masqueraders Wake Up Fool was, so just looking at the playlist has inspired me to go back and revisit tunes I haven't seen or played for years. It looks like the series of CD's is going to give the music we love the exposure it deserves and for a fiver a CD, I hope they sell bucket loads.
  13. Guys thanks for your comments they're greatly appreciated Ady, I don't think you're that sad.... It's the other side of Just Another Morning As people have said this has turned into a very good swap
  14. Its on the self titled Fania LP from the early 70's and I've seen that LP go from as little as £30 to £150
  15. Got two through the door today Mark's(Funkyfeet) and one unmarked and I can't read the postmark. It starts with Queen Esther Marrow and ends with Syreeta. Could whoever made it identify themselves as I like to put who they are from when I upload it to my Ipod.
  16. Rob, thanks for the offer, but I'd like to close this one off as I'll get confused if I'm in too many swaps that are going on at the same time and I'm also in the Sweet/Deep one as well. Guys, I know the comments to Roger were tongue in cheek, but he's not the only villain in this film.
  17. Any more on the way?
  18. Got done last month with one and called Royal Mail to ask them what the charge was for. The £8odd charge is their admin chanrge for paying customs on your behalf and from what I was told by people on here, theres no way round this. I think its daylight robbery.
  19. My first lot went out today. Apologies and I'm not being tight, but I haven't included a CD sleeve with them as I've run out and all of my local shops are out too, so waiting for a delivery from the net... There must be a lot of CD swaps going on at the moment.
  20. Dylan, I really like Sparks - I'll Show You, I assume this was before they made Beat The Clock & La Dolce Vita, when they were soulful.
  21. I'm with Ken on this. I can't actually hear anything soulful in it.
  22. Sacrilege......... Got three CD's yesterday and loaded them onto my Ipod last night. Loverly stuff chaps......... This is gonna be a good swap.
  23. Blimey guys, I'm still hacking getting it down from about 4 CD's, let alone going through the burning and sending process. Think I'll do the easy part today and buy the stamps. Look forward to receiving them.
  24. Just had another thought re stuff not in Refosoul. I used to post a few tunes in the Sweet & Deep thread and occasionally still do, so by posting stuff in Refosoul has actually cut down my options. Also as someone has said there are some big hitters participating in this swap, so there isn't gonna be anything new to them on my CD. My preference is would be to leave it open as possible and just make a quality CD irrespective of price or if the tunes are known? Just a thoughts. Got some great Dooley's tunes to sift through when I get home....
  25. Steve, Sounds a great idea... I thought of quite a few tunes which I thought that were slightly out of the ordinary and they were already in RefoSoul . Think that might be quite a tough task.
