  1. I am with you on that one, Dave. Essential purchase.
  2. Flip of 'Harlem rumble' is 'Bring it on home'.
  3. Would say 1968 though the phrase hadn't been coined then. Was aware of the sounds being played at the Wheel but too young to go. Never left me and never will I imagine.
  4. Surely it's only connection to it being a pop record is by virtue of the artist. Everything else about it - production, arrangement, backing vocals, instrumentation, beat and rhythm - puts it firmly into the category of Northern Soul. Maybe not todays Northern Soul, or whatever description is used, but certainly representative of the scene as a whole. Would we so dismissive of it if it had it been a black vocalist? I think not.
  5. The issue is whether or not you are carrying out a trade, something that would probably not apply to 99% of people who are selling records in any quantity who are on this forum. The Inland Revenue, who are unlikely to have significant resources available to establish a trading position on any great scale, would have to consider what are known as the "badges of trade." For people owning records, for personal use in the first instance, and then selling them on, even at a profit, in order to acquire more records for personal use, the "badges of trade" argument is not likely to be sustained. There is a concept of "pride of possession" which extends to chatels such as records, books, works of art etc that distinguishes such assets from trading stock. Difficult to see how this could be taxable even within the CGT regime.
  6. Me too, Dave as far as Milly Jackson was concerned. Completely worn out the vinyl playing them constantly.

    Who's that by then?

Unfortunately it's going to continue to be like that, Chalky. Vastly under-rated. Sad news indeed.

Yeah but I didn't know that. I suppose I've laboured the point but given that there were so many great tracks being discovered on a weekly bais then, why feel the need to throw in something so painfully wrong. Some other stuff, seen as being in a similar vein, at least would have had an identifiable beat/rhythm associaited with Northern, but Leon Young Strings, to me, is so far removed from that. As "Bill Switchgear" says all eras will have had such stuff, just that I cant remember this kind of garbage specifically being spun.

Now we are talking real shite with that Dave. Christ I'm glad I don't remember that. I honestly don't remember anything falling into this category. There were plenty of tracks that I didn't really take to but they would have been your traditional northern stuff that just didn't cut it for me. But it just doesn't fit that given the amount of stuff being discovered then, that stuff likd Leon Young and Offenbach could even be considered. I have no idea what the Wheel played amongst all of the classics but maybe it was just as culpable in playing pop garbage and let's be honest Leon Young doesn't even fit into the white pop stomper category so easily identifiable with the worst of the Wigan years. I remain confused.

I'm sure that's true Frosty but I went to Up the Junction, the Torch (only twice as I said), the Mecca, Wigan in the earlier years and I genuinely don't remember shite pop tunes as you put it being played. So it does surprise me to find that this may date to the Torch era.

Mark, that defies all logic. Given that the Torch era was awash with so many great tunes why would this piece of garbage be considered? Only went to the Torch twice but would not remember if this was played anyway.

Cheers Pete, listened to earlier today and thought it could not belong on the Northern scene but like a lot of other stuff it might have had it's day somewhere.

Was "Glad all over" ever played out. If so where and by whom. And more importantly why???
  15. JM's site currently says it has 2 weeks and a day to go.
  16. Actually it is better than most tunes out there, not just a few. Subjective I know but I am actually right on this. This thing about being played out a lot. Being heard out a lot may well diminish the general perception about the quality of a track - familiarity breeds contempt, that kind of stuff, - but a cold light of day and therefore clinical assessment of this particular track and others that apparently suffer from over exposure ought to confirm that it's appeal should remain intact because quality will trump excess every time. Does this happen in pop music? Does the fact that you might have heard something like "He ain't heavy" a zillion times make it any less recognised as an absolute stone cold gem?
  17. In some respects the epitome of Northern. Regardless of how many known copies there are, this ought to command a big ticket all day long.
  18. Wiggy, so whats the origin of this for you? Avid listener of Sunset Radio in it's day - Mike Shaft owned I think. Not listened to it yet but no doubt tons of stuff that I will remember.
  19. For what it's worth R & B Indies has it at 1967.
  20. They may not have listened to the tracks but can get the chance if they are prepared to travel to where Butch jocks (assuming we are just talking about his stuff). That's the rub - to what extent are people prepared to put themselves out to to hear the best that the scene can offer.

Just checked my tapes and the earliest I've got is July 1985. Features stuff like Dennis Edwards - Coolin' out, Patti LaBelle - I can't forget you, Frederick - Games, which are all '85 releases, I think.

Would have been 1985 assuming he went to Red Rose from Hallam. I used to get monthly tapes from him as the "Soul Sauce Collection" and I've got them from 1985.
