Richard Searling Book?
- Richard Searling Book?
I've seen the "work in progress" and it looks to be very interesting although it's not strictly about Richard's life and history within the scene more about the records/artists that have influnced him and given him so much pleasure over the years. About 6 or 7 years ago a student was going to do a dissertation on Richard but it never came to fruition unfortunately. As has been said before, post on his site and I'm sure he will happily answer: www.richardsearling.co.uk Best Steve- Notes On Record Sleeves
Yeah.... A white sleeve left on the kitchen worktop says "If you're going to the shop we need some cat food". T'was from the Mrs of course- The Four Tops Your Song Uk Calibre
....Kinell, how much and I gave a couple of copies away. Only got the 12" nowadays and I'd give that away too coz it's garbage. Gobsmacked- News: Margaret Little - Her Story
- Carl Fortnum?
To the point as usual- Northern Soul Cover Versions
Gabriella Cilme - "On a magic carpet ride" from the Soulboy movie... pretty good version as far as I'm concerned. Marylin Manson "Tainted Love"... about as raucous as you could get! The Paris Sisters "Long after tonight is all over"... well c'mon, at least Dusty's version was soulful. Etc etc etc Steve- Non-Soul Ns Classics
Purple Haze.............. to be honest you could get James Brown, Etta James, Aretha Franklyn, Marvin Gaye, Jackie Wilson, Sam Fletcher, Sam Dees, Otis Redding.... and many others all in the studio together... and it would still sound like a rock record ... because it is Steve- Non-Soul Ns Classics
Could the influence be the fact that Nolan (NF) is married to Candice Zappa.... sister to the late Frank Zappa of legendary proportions on the folk / rock scene :D Steve- Non-Soul Ns Classics
Great record, although I must admit on the album cover they look more like Bo & Luke Duke from the Dukes of Hazzard. Wasn't this a Dave Raistrick discovery??? Steve- Wanted Little John
..... and don't I know it. There's a little story to go with this. I used to buy off John at Soul Bowl on a weekly basis. Luckily I only lived about 12 miles away and was always popping across to see him, even helping him compile soul packs on occasions. Luckily, I sometimes got a sneaky peek at what was on the list but I had to wait for it to drop through the letter box like eveyone else. On this occasion, the list arrived as usual but I had to go out to a meeting which meant leaving the house at 8am, half an hour before John would switch the phone on in his office (which was actually his kitchen). This was way before the days of mobile phones so I had two options. Start my journey and try to find a phone box at 8:30am or get someone to call John and secure the record. John had my card details and knew that I would collect at some point... so just before I had to leave for my meeting, I phone Andy Rix and asked him to reserve Little John "Just Wait And See" on Go-Gate for me. He rang at 8:30, I got the record and I'm sure he has been pi**ed off with me ever since. Absolute minter of a copy, unplayed and for £50. Good on ya Andy, those were the days. Steve Handbury- Wanted Little John
Originally bought mine from John Anderson at the Bowl.... £50. Thought it was expensive at the time. Eventually sold it to Carl Fortnum for something like £300 I think. How stupid was I Steve- Curtis: How Can I Tell Her (Charm City) Sorted

Pete, Where are you nowadays . I've got loads and probably a lot you won't like coz there modern in there too. Can't list them as it would take me a year. Slow typer and all that . Guess there's 1000 many promos dunno, wouldn't like to count but certainly includes many Kent and goldmine plus others Steve- Manifesto Magazines
Multiple copies / boxes of manifesto magazine. Great to give away at venues or just promote soul music. Free to anyone who wants them. Can post but expect a hefty bill. Ideally recipient collects or if you are in Huddersfield area can meet. All sorts in there. Pm if interested Steve- Herb Ward R.i.p
..... and he was a thoroughly nice guy too. When I spoke to him for Manifesto he cared about two things only. His mother who he was caring for and his life as a trucker. He had no interest in his singing career no matter how good we on the soul scene think his records are. RIP Herb Steve- Book Wanted
Replied to your PM but don't know if you also saw that this is on my book list too Best Steve- Motown-The Complete Number 1's Cd Box Set
Hi, I guess you all saw this when it was released a few years ago. Mines up for grabs now to make shelf space. I say shelf space because that's where it has sat simply because I liked the fact that it is boxed in a mini version of Hitsville, the home of Motown. Motown - The complete number 1's. A multitude of CD's containing every Motown number one record. Boxed in a copy of Hitsville USA complete with booklet etc etc. This is a promo copy and is still completely sealed in its shrink wrap. £75 including postage to UK address. Payment by cash, cheque, postal order or bank transfer. Sorry, no paypal. Thanks for looking Steve- Rare Soul Books Up For Offers
Hi, Time for another clear out and this time its some of the books that have to go. The majority of the following are in virtually un-read condition and some are extremely scarce. I've put them up for offers although I do have an idea what I would want for certain titles. Postage on these would be at cost but until I can weigh each book I don't know what that would be. Payments should a deal be struck would be by Cash, Cheque, Bank Transfer or Postal Order as I don't have Paypal facilities. Thanks for looking Steve The R&B Indies (McGrath) Volume 1 A-L / Volume 2 M-Z. This is the first edition which came as a two volume set, later published in 4 smaller volumes I believe. It lists all known USA independent labels and releases known at the time. Off The Record - Motown By Master Number 1959-1989 (Hardback) R&R/PC Books. Pretty much as the title suggests. All known releases listed with artist / a-side / b-side and deadwax information from Motown and subsiduaries. Heatwave - The Motown Fact Book (Hardback) R&R / PC Books. A history of the artists and groups and how they started their careers with Motown (inc photographs of most artists). Soul Harmony Singles 1960-1990 (Beckman / Hunt / Kline) The raved about book focussing on group harmony releases over three decades. This has been out of it's wrapper (shrink sleeve) once and carefully placed back in. Almost still sealed. Rare Motown And Soul Price Guide (Simon Soussan) One of the most sought after Northern related books to have been published. This is possibly the best condition copy you will find and so very hard to obtain these days. Beautiful black and white scans of many of the unreleased Motown acteates along with obscure Motown demo's. The World Of Soul (Arnold Shaw) This small paperback covers all aspects of soul music from the 60's and 70's. Condition is VG+ only on this but it is also one of the rarest soul publications I have. Chicago Soul (Robert Pruter) (Hardback) As it says, a history of Chicago Soul and it's artists. DooWop (Robert Pruter) (Hardback) A history of DooWop from one of the leading authorities on soul music. Encyclopedia Of Rhythm & Blues & DooWop Vocal Groups (Rosalsky) (Hardback) As the title would suggest Spinning Blues Into Gold (Nadine Cohodas) (Hardback) A history of Blues Northern Soul - Music, Drugs & Subcultural Identity (Andrew Wilson) (Hardback) Actually I cant tell you a great deal about this book... I've never read it. Time for Google methinks. Top R&B Singles 1942-1999 (Hardback) (Record Research) An across the board history of soul & R&B singles. Where Did Our Love Go (Nelson George) (Hardback) One of many books dedicated to the girl groups of Motown inc Supremes. I have many, many more to offer all of which will get a listing on here over the next few weeks. Any questions please PM me. Thanks again Steve- Eddie Parker On Manships Site
Yes John had "quantity" and was always well in with both Jack and Eddie (if you follow his lists from the early days thats why all the new Eddie Parker releases appeared on there too, things like "Dream" etc etc) Steve- ‘Soul People Of Interest’
Kashif, Luther Vandross "Never Too Much", Leroy Hutson etc etc. Adam was forefront on the Modern side at the time and not afraid to put his neck on the line to substantiate his conviction. Steve - Richard Searling Book?
