  1. Get the flow right. Think about what'll sound good following on from the first record until the last and don't think you just need uptempo stuff constantly, a midtempo or even slowie can follow on nicely from something fast.
  2. Well I sort of want it but I shouldn't be buying anything right now!
  3. I'm in that dilemma right now, Two hours to go...
  4. I'm eagerly awaiting news of one being held in Saudi Arabia...
  5. Not forgetting Thornton Crown Hotel and Glenrothes YMCA, which I think Guy Hennigan said was the best place he ever played.
  6. Memories...I first went down in 1983 or 84, in the company of Mr Roddy Brass and some other lads from Edinburgh. My first impression was how small it was and the pillars which seemed to constrict the dancefloor, in fact I thought 'great place for a club night, bit cramped for a full all-nighter'. The other surprise was, of course, the sale of booze, which wasn't something you got at all-nighters in the 80s. And I seem to recall a group of Chinese waiters hanging around the place, who I guess worked there as I couldn't imagine they were there for the music! Speaking of which...the early DJs seemed to play a fairly standard set of oldies - There She Goes by the Tymes, Right Track, maybe even Needle in a Haystack etc. Not that I was complaining although Ian Clarke and Ady's sets were much more 'with it' as well as being educational and interesting to my teenage ears. I do recall Tony Rounce getting very annoyed by a lack of dancefloor action during his set even interrupting one record with 'you lot should have your legs broken if you won't dance to this!' The dancefloor regularly filled and emptied through the night as popular sounds were mixed in with stuff that was new or unknown. And indeed celebrities did appear as mentioned before. Mick Talbot in his Style Council 'blazer and flannels' get-up and the Jo-Boxers. I had a brief chat with their lead singer (the Black American guy) and asked him what he thought. His reply was 'this is old music, kinda like what my parents listen to' - so not his thing clearly! Overall a great experience, although I admit that I did fall asleep at one point!
  7. Another one or the same person? If it's been booted I'd like to know before I go trying to buy one... https://www.ebay.com/itm/Northern-Roy-Roberts-Got-To-Have-Your-Love-B-W-Legend-Of-Otis-Redding-Mint-/120980317416?pt=Music_on_Vinyl&hash=item1c2afd24e8
  8. Is this a look-a-like 'reissue'? The current price seems rather low for such a desirable 45. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ROY-ROBERTS-LEGEND-OTIS-REDDING-GO-HAVE-LOVE-NINANDY-7-/160812068192?pt=Music_on_Vinyl&hash=item2571256d60
  9. It was certainly given a Sue number WI4011, but is categorised as 'unissued' in my old copy of the Sue discography list. It also featured on the Sue Story LP.

  13. Former soap star?
  14. I thought it was very enjoyable and the Northern soul setting finally gives a nod to what was one of the most important youth sub-cultures of the 70s. Yes, a cheesy dance-off, but overall it doesn't really detract from what is a nice, humourous little British movie.
  15. There are a reasonable spread of events in Scotland but not masses and not every week. But you only have to look at something like the Soul Scotland website to see that in July/August there's events in Greenock, Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Bonnyrigg, Bathgate, Dundee and probably others not listed, so not too bad...tough if you live in the Hebrides I'll admit!
  16. Ah ha! That probably explains why I can't find it on 45 anywhere!
  17. Varetta Dillard - That's Why I Cry - RCA Eddie Bo - Walk That Walk - Chess No idea how rare, in-demand or expensive these two are these days but if you've got 'em I'd like 'em!
  18. Any CD crass enough to be called 'Mod Mania: A Way of Life' should be avoided as should anything with titles such as 'Keeping the Faith' 'Out on the Floor' or 'Casino Classics'. More properly it should be called 'Cheapo Cash-in: Buy Me You Mug'. Now to be honest I haven't seen this CD myself but it's even money that it's got a target somewhere on the cover!

You must be the person who won the Euro Millions jackpot then?
  20. Oh god, that seemed to happen all the time. One guy I experienced kept saying 'that's reserved' or 'someone's already bought that' when I was attempting to purchase stuff from him. Finally lost my temper and said 'Are ANY of these actually for sale or are you just wasting my effing time!' He wasn't very pleased! Also experienced a seller who wouldn't let me have anything if I 'didn't know it' 'How will I ever get to know it if you don't sell me it' was my smart-alec reply. He wasn't very pleased either...
  21. I suppose the difference to the 'good old days' is that some records these days become instantly 'in-demand' after they appear on a popular CD. Witness the lunacy over Mike Pedicin. One minute it's a moderately affordable 45 that you'll have only ever heard on the scene. Then after it appears on a compilation that everyone world-wide has access to...whoosh it's costing £1000 and over. To hell with that! Maybe people should see what Kent or ACE have in the pipeline for future releases and buy accordingly..or more sensibly just buy whatever they like and ignore the rabble!
  22. First record I ever heard (circa 1979) that made me realise what this strange 'Northern Soul' music that some guys at school were into actually was. Two guys in my class turned up at a school disco wearing their bags, vests, etc and got the teacher on the decks to play their Northern records. After telling us we couldn't go on the dance floor while they were 'doing their thing' (ooh, how arrogant!), they then proceeded to do the usual kicks, backdrops, splits etc to these weird and wonderful sounds. After they had danced to their four or five records they then buggered off - probably to the pub at age 14 - while the rest of us got on down to whatever chart rubbish we were being served up. Have loved it ever since!
  23. I'm sure the Enchantments were LA Hispanics not, ahem...'honkys'.

Fascinating if in many ways horrible look at how a city lives and dies. Not too much about the music scene though, but interesting to see Mitch Ryder's input (one of the best white soul singers). How many times has Martha Reeves told that story about singing 'Nowhere to run' on the Ford production line! Thank god I live in nice quiet Edinburgh where the local pub just got shut down due to a shooting incident!!
  25. I'd rather talk about Ann-Margaret anyway!
