do you know who IAN LEVINE is he has discovered many great records we hear and play today' he is a legend .

did you ever go to highland room Blackpool where many great records was discovered by Ian.

you should not make judgement until you hear what he has to play.

IAN is a very knowledgeable guy 'knows writers producers and all the labels.

he may have drifted away from the northern scene but still knows the business inside out.

Hence my final comment.

I know exactly who he is but like Simon Soussan, every time his name gets mentioned on here he gets shredded wthout the ability to defend himself.

as far as soussan is concerned, he's a bit like elvis, either dead or rumoured to be alive, but always mentioned in dispatches.

if he were still around, it wouldn't be too difficult for him to find his accusers. he'd only have to google northern soul forums and wade into the fray... if he wanted to.

He contacted me once when I made a comment about him. Honestly. Wasn't on soul source I don't think though, think it was on Advanced Northern Soul.

The mighty Butch cannot be compared to levine.....back in the 70's it would be almost impossible NOT to find records...you could almost fall over tons of brill tunes,as levine did....Butch however has found countless brill records when they were fookin hard to find and still does,he has squirrelled away stuff years ago for playing at a later date....in short shear genius......one last thing to bare in mind.......levine never found any of Butch's discoveries when they were there to be found rather more easily......in short BUTCH discovers rare tunes that are good......levine had records posted to him...not really knowing the wheat from the chaff....tezza

I was at 100 club last time he played and it was quite an interesting night!. It shouldnt be too bad as long as he keeps it 'black' and introduces a few of his current favs!, oh, and I didnt agree with him having a 2 hour set!, he shoud plan 2 sets just like the other jocks

...either you have an ear for a tune or not and ians history says he has..wotever some of you may think of him....reckon it will be good for the scene to have him back

It's never good for the scene to have him back, because he always thinks he is more important than the scene and everyone on it!

well personally i dont think a mans ego can harm the scene in any way but like it or not levine playing at the 100 club will probably bring more people in than push them away and that cant be a bad thing as crowds have been down at a lot of venues of late...

there are a lot of big egos on this and any scene but the music will carry on regardless

J.P. On the subject of distinctly Stafford sounding records, and although I want to cover this in depth later, the who found what side of things, were there any specific factors which contributed to the amount of rarities that got played ?

T.A. There were two big record collections which played a big part in what was played at Stafford. The first was Ian Levines collection, which had ended up at Bernie Goldings. It had been well and truly gone through for Traditional Northern by several people, John Manship and I had gone through it at Levines house, where the deal was if you bought so many they were a quid or two each. I got tons as did John. A few years later, as I said, it ended up with Bernie. Of course the style of Northern Soul had changed by then, so people were able to pull yet more stuff, as did Keb and Co .

Peggy Im sorry but I have to disagree with you forcefully.

Levine was very fortunate to come from a well off family that he travelled to the states to find records when most of us could only dream to afford to go there thats why he got so many not that they were posted to him although he did have his suppliers like most Djs do. Back in the 70s although there was thousands of records to find you had to be in a special group of people in order to get unlicensed access - even I was lucky for a short time working at global. The other thing is tastes change and the things butch plays now might not have been flavour of the day then- so infact Ian could maybe have heard some of Butches discoveries but passed them by as they didnt fit into the recipe for the time! I love Butches discoveries but I love Levines because when your young music influences you in an emotional way that is different to when you are older.

If I heard one of Butchs discoveries ID think to myself - thats bloody great but the oldies that are now but were new back in the day make my hairs stand on end because of the emotional attachment to the scene at the time and the friends at the time and there fore the association with Levine is much deeper - so you could say its one of Nostalgia because I was there! That doesnt mean that Butch is less but Ian is held in esteem for the reasons I have given.

Anyway, back to today.

Musically, the last 100 Club was sublime.

It will be interesting to hear if Ian Levine brings anything to the party!

I'm coming in my Dalek suit ;-) I don't know what Ian will play, but I doubt anything he plays will touch the brilliant new vocal to "just like the weather" that has recently turned up. I believe Butch has one of only two copies!

Hi All to be honest if you did not go to the Highland Room it would change how he is as a DJ, We all are aware Ian has no people skills, but he was far more qualified than you give the man credit for, I bet he don't turn up! as I have never been asked to DJ it means at the moment Ian is more popular than me GGGGRRRR! Give the Man A Bone DAVE

had about 10 people in the room most left and went to the modern room
