ANNETTE SNELL

The Sandersville, Georgia-born Annette โ€˜Slimโ€™ Snell arrived at the Muscle Shoals Sound Studio in April 1977 at a time when the studioโ€™s house band, nicknamed โ€˜The Swampersโ€™, was firing on all cylinders. The thirty-two-year-old Snell was at the cusp of becoming a successful solo artist after more than a decade as a Miami backing vocalist and latterly in Nashville, where she cut for Buddy Killenโ€™s Dial label. The Muscle Shoals session, which was produced by Jimmy Johnson and Roger Hawkins, resulted in four tracks but only two appeared at the time.

Annette Snell never got to hear the finished labours. She was killed when the plane in which she was returning to Atlanta crash-landed and caught fire near New Hope, Georgia. Soul music had lost a rising star.

These two cuts, co-written by pre-eminent songwriters including George Jackson and Philip Mitchell, have been languishing in the vaults for over forty years, a forgotten testament to what might have been.

FREDERICK KNIGHT

One of the main figures in Alabamaโ€™s music scene, Frederick Knight arrived at Stax in 1972 and hit with the country soul of "I've Been Lonely For So Long", making number 8 on the R&B chart, and the subsequent album was a real milestone in his career.

Prior to this he played a significant part as a producer/writer at Neil Hemphill's Sound of Birmingham Studios where the Stax album was cut. Later that decade Knight would again achieve commercial success with his own record label, Juana, and the recordings of The Controllers and, most notably, Anita Ward.

These early 70s tracks have never surfaced on vinyl before, both of which were also recorded in Birmingham. The plaintive ballad "You've Never Really Lived" with its subtle tempo will have you hooked from the off, while "How, When Or Where" is a mid-tempo opus that will please the dancers out there.

Two utterly fabulous tunes.

Annette Snell sent me the shivers just with the music kicking in and then goose pimples with her voice on 'I think...' Truly wonderful. Typing this while the YT clip tune is still playing on first play. Soon purchase for sure. Thanks. Timย

Agree totally, the first couple of seconds also remind of Phillip Mitchell's ''Just The Beginning " which is not surprising given the writing credits ๐Ÿ™‚

ย Very sad. ย I do hope they have all the tracks from the sessions and the Lp is not lost!

I read somewhere that the master tapes were with Annette when she died in the plane crash. Great to have a couple of tracks from the MS sessions. But 40+ years in the can?

She was a fabulous singer. Who knows what she might have recorded.

It was just a rumor. Interviews with the studio staff confirmed they were still at Fame because the recordings were unfinished.
