sandi blog part 3 of 3 2009-10

Venues, Birthdays, Weddings, Betrayal Most Horrid.
Posted by sandi, 08 October 2010 ·

Along this road of life no matter what background we all as individuals have, no matter what our gender, race, views, loves and dislikes, We will encounter many trials, tribulations, and experiences that make us the people we are, most of us learn from our experiences and our mistakes, we don't always get it right in the beginnig, but because of who and what we are and our beliefs we strive to get it as right to the best of our abilities..............Note l said "most of us", unfortunately there is a small percentage who don't, Why!!!, well l don't know the answer to that, however l can make a few guesses, maybe it's a case that their brains synapses don't connect in the correct way, maybe they are genuinely slower at catching on, or is it that some just think it's acceptable to bulldoze their way through life without a thought for others and their feelings along the way !!!..,.......The ones like this really get my blood boiling, because when things they do are mentioned in public they are the 1st to turn a situation (they created and blame it on YOU and OTHERS).

Right thats just a little intro for my Blog update, a little taster if you like, because over the past not sure how many months we (Thats Mr and Mrs Harpin lol, and friends) have encountered people like these, Stangely enough though, more often than not, it's the same people making the same "mistake's", or "NOT", and still no sign of making a situation better. In fact on the soul scene recently l and many others have heard names mentioned on a monumental scale........and l thought l was the one most spoke about

So where have we been, what have we been up to !, Not too many places around the West Midlands, for the exception of Bishops Wood All-nighter, and Lifeline All-nighter, a few venues we have attended in the Mids to give support to the promoters and D.J.'s.

one being Blackheath Disciples of Soul promoted by Mr and Mrs Soul, John Weston and Co, This was their 1st niter and l know Lou was very apprehensive about how the night would pan out, she need'nt of worried, for a 1st nighter as new venues go these day they had a fantastic response and it was well attended, having two rooms, the music on the whole was quality soul (exception of a few dodgy ones, but is'nt that par for the course?), Dave Welding was on fire ...AGAIN , so was john Weston, l even had to let Lou know that her spot was the best l'd ever heard her play, l don't mean that in a nasty way, l mean Lou and l don't always share the same taste in music, and she grabbed my full attention.
Len Cook did a fantastic set and so did the Irish guy(soz 4got his name), in fact everyone did good, l must also mention Sean, a few Peeps came over to me while he was d.j.ing and asked who he was, so well done Sean x.

Mick H, god bless him, l love him to bits and l'm sure he's a bit weary of me, he has'nt yet figured me out, then l did wave a bra at him during his set at Bishops wood some months back, he looked quite shocked, l did however tell him that it was'nt my bra it was HARPO'S .....Mick played a record and l swear to god it sampled "Blue Velvet", he was not amused when l mentioned it to him, he was more than not amused when l started singing "She wore blue velvet etc etc ...." having a titter to myself l went out for a ciggi, some time later Paul told me that Mick had requested over the mic for all to hear that Paul "Harpo" should come and sort me out, and tell me to calm down.........., how cute, l was'nt even in 1st gear, l showed him mercy however and did'nt say owt about the comment ,.................................not till later, much later while he was bidding everyone goodnight and god bless, I just asked him not to send my lovely husband to sort me out in future, it's not fair, Paul has to live with me lol......He Patted me on the back and said"oh Sandi you are funny"..."yes Mick and you're scared"......, only jesting with you Mick l think you are a super guy x.

Remember "The few folk!" l will from time to time keep mentioning, well suprise suprise some made an appearance, l totally ignored them unless any spoke to me, yet by the end of the nighter l was sick of hearing one particular name/person mentioned, I can only comment that l'm glad l'm not they, some feathers have been truely ruffled and l think it will all end in tears .

We went along to Brum to support Sean when he put on a venue there. This was the second venue we'd been to, the 1st being Neil Rushtons All-dayer at Rugely's Lea hall, somewhat of a poor turn out, however the music was exceptional, Rob Haige d.j.ed, and it's the 1st time in years l'd heard him d.j., good to know he aint lost it, still has the music in his soul, belting spot from Rob . I must also mention that although the music was great l was'nt too happy, l am convinced it was a conspiracy against me, l was on crutches after just coming out of hospital where l'd had an operation and skin graft on my leg...... all the tunes l love being played and me not able to dance.....well l had a bloody good go, cruthes and all.
Ted massey blew me away with his set, again it's a conspiracy, l said to Ted "you're doing this on purpose cus you know l love what you're playing, and can you play em when l loose my sticks??".....I bet he don't .
My Hubby also played a great set and l was supposed to but stepped down (if you pardon the pun),due to my gammy leg.
It's a shame when promoters put on excellent nights and not many turn up, sometimes it's a case of the low rate venues pull the crowds and the top rate ones fail, l have my own theory why this happens, anyone out there have their own ??, l'd like to hear em if you do.
We made our way over to Brum, because Paul was booked to d.j. , which was a shame really because l'd of loved to of stayed, in comparison to music quality Brum would'nt deliver like it was at Rugely,it was the place to be.
The Brum venue, when Paul was asked originally if he'd d.j. there was as far as we could make out going to be a late "soul nite", so some weeks after when Sean called at our house with a bundle of flyers asking if we'd distribute them for him at venues he knew we would be attending, places other than local midlands venues, we agreed. A couple of days later, while reading one of the flyers l was a little if not quite suprised even shocked at the way the flyer had been worded.
1stly, it was now being promoted as a "Poma Tribute", because of it being Robs birthday on aug 15th, l dont have any issue with remembering Rob, l loved the guy he was one of my oldest dearest friends, and the way l look at it is by all means remember and pay tribute, not for his birthday but for the way he lived his life , the way he affected so many people, and the unfairness of his untimely death, or rather pay tribute that on that sad day we lost a major family member of the scene. It's time to let go and let him rest in peace. It's not my intention to upset people, especially Robs family, l dont need a tribute nite to remember, he's in my heart and will never be forgotten, along side many others we have lost along the way.
2nd, the d.j.'s for the nite were referred to as "Vinyl Carvers"......., what was that all about ??, Vinyl Carvers is a company that carves tracks onto vinyl mainly c.d. tracks and for a great deal of money, l don't know about you but it implied to me that all d.j.'s on the nite would be playing "Bootlegs", as a member of this elitist scene l know that a lot of stigma is attached to "Bootlegs", and most venues are strict about them not being played at all. D.J's such as Steve Whittle, and Harpo who both d.j.ed on the nite certainly do not have "Bootlegs" or indeed "vinyl Carvers".......Sean whoever came up with that idea needs sacking or shooting .
3rd,Damage on the door ???, Why !, again a negative use of words in my most humble opinion to promote a venue with the hope it will take off....damage implys paying for a 3rd rate night out.

Yet after saying all that, and l believe it had to be said, the night was a pretty good one, dance floor busy all nite and a good turn out, however not as good as the 1st few tributes to Rob.
Paul was on last, and dilivered an outstanding set.....or should l say did his best to under the circumstances, about 20 mins into his set, lights go on, and Sammy and Lanky Paul start to dismantle the equipment from around Paul while he endeavoured to keep his composure and patience.
That to me was totally unexceptable, do these people forget, do they not have any respect!, Harpo is one of the old Wolverhampton crew who when everyone else was doing "other stuff" kept the soul scene alive in Wolverhampton and influenced alot of D.J.'s over the years, not to mention the records he broke onto the scene, along side Pep, Neil Rushton, he put the midlands back on the map, they all deserve more respect than what they get, am l saying this because Paul is my Husband ......NO far from it, l say it because l was there and it happens to be true.

Remember "Them Folk", one of them made a comment quite openly very recently that Paul is a "Puppet", said that everyone on the scene pulls his strings...Do you think this person should be named and shamed ? l do, but not yet.

Going to backtrack a bit now, l went along for the "unveiling" of the plaque for the Catacombes, l expected the Mayor to be there and all sorts of important people (I mean officials), this was'nt the case, just a decent sized crowd, some of whom "l was there" were original Catacombes people, many more who attended were'nt including me, l'm sad to say the place had closed 6 months before l was old enough to go, plus my dad was still alive and he'd of bloody well killed me if l'd gone .
There was a gezza from the express and star l believe, must of been, seeing it was in the paper on the following monday lol.
To be honest l think it was a bit of a anti-climax, yet Neil Rushton yet again pulled off a fantastic night later at Great Wearly with the Cat's Revival, absolutely packed out.

Going back yet a bit further, the news about Max, we were at Rolls Royce when we heard, apparently suffering a heart attack after finishing his set at Brookfields, nothing could prepare anyone there when about an hour later it was confirmed that Max had died. Everyone shed a tear or more, people were genuinely in shock. It really brings it home when something like this happens it reminds us that we all are here on borrowed time. So if l have something to say l say it, it will be too late when l'm dead.

Max's funeral was very fitting to a man who gave us all so much, many many people turned out to say a final goodbye, and as the funeral procession drove away everyone started to applaude, how much was that man loved?, yet "Not All Folk", it is of no importance the ones that did'nt ,fade into the background and eventually disappear.

Our Wedding Day was fantastic and everyone who attended came for one reason only and that was to help us celebrate our special day, it was a very informal occassion, no set seating, no long winded speeches, hey not even a bust up ,just a great day shared with great family and friends.
The all-nighter at Bishope Wood after, that we had arranged, payed for and organised, was a fitting end to the perfect day.....what more could any bride want ?

Isnt it funny how even "Some Folk" when invited to a private function, ignore the host's (bride and groom)on their way in and make straight for the record bar!,
Now luckily for them there were some record dealers at our wedding niter reception purely because we asked them if they wanted to bring their sales boxes with them, not visa versa. One of these two "Folk" made a comment about the lack of dealers being at the niter, adding that is'nt that what nighters are all about.....well not in my world, yes l love my music and we collect records but they failed to understand that this although was a niter it was our niter and our wedding reception.A GOLD STAR FOR THE PERSON WHO CORRECTLY IDENTIFYS THE "ONE" WHO IT WOULD APPEAR IS NOT JUST CLUELESS BUT ALSO BRAINLESS. :hypocrite:Soz got carried away with the icons

Most newly weds go home and do what newly weds do , however this is us we are referring to, no not us, we had a house full of friends who were as keen as us to keep the party going. Just when life gives you a boat load of happiness somone or something or "Both" comes along and tries snatching it away.
BETRAYAL comes in many forms and l never expected it to come from someone l considered to be a very good friend, yet shit happens, usually l cope and handle it, but the day after our wedding, and that person being a guest also it knocked me for six, l dont give in to tears , it takes a lot to make me cry, yet this was the final outcome.

How would you feel if you also was put into this position, You have a houseful of guests, all who are not local to our area, all are having a good time and are truely happy for us, we have one guest who is a very special person to us and happens to be quite poorly,he's attended the wedding and it's took it's toll, so as caring friends we are looking after him and making sure he's ok. Then along comes trouble with a capital T, Wlatzing around our house helping ones self to not 1 but 2 bottles of our wine out of our fridge without so much as a by your leave( one other guest addressed him for doing that but to no avail) pouring almost the entire bottle into one of our pint glasses and then sitting down next to me drinking it. I asked what was in the glass and when told wine, l initially thought that this person had been to the pub and walked up the road with it.
I have no problem with giving anyone a drink in our house or offering them something to eat, but this was just disrespectful, that was the beginning of a string of events that eventually lead Paul to ask this person to leave, this was not the 1st visit of the day, we had 2 or 3 more after that. This person seemed to have a problem with DRUGS and those who take Drugs on the scene, however it was'nt mentioned until after this person had had their fair share.
What else....Threats of violence towards at least 2 of our guests, unwanted touchy feely advances towards a member of the opposite sex, nasty hurtful comments regards a friend no longer with us, declaration of love and friendship for another dear departed member who this person when alive, slagged off, talk about two faced. There are also some things l won't mention because it would be too embarassing, not for the said one, but for our other friend who was very upset by the actions taken.

All in all, we have been busy, but thats just regards our involvement on the scene, our private lives have also been very busy.......but thats another story for another time

It seems like eon's that l've put a post on here, for those who'd rather l did'nt.......................tuff.

We have'nt been out and about much lately thats due to either one or both of us not being too well.

I'm feeling ok now so thought l'd just put a update post on here.................just because l can !!!!!!!!

Lots of things have been happening on the scene that have left me reeling, it seems that every week we hear about one or more of our long and established friends dying or being taken seriously ill.

To mention two since Trevor Wrights scrape with the grim reaper ..........Margie Rimmer, such a crying shame, she was a very special lady and she will be sorely missed not just by me but by many others, Mrs Soul our Lou l know will be missing her and feeling lost without her............Who will she have now to tease me at soul do's by putting their waste paper sweet wrappers in my bag, not to mention their cheese and onion cob wrappers !!!!!!, they were so much a team together, and they made me laugh and smile with their silly school girl antics, What l would'nt give for them to be a team again.........yet we never forget the ones who we love, who gave so much and asked for nothing in return, yet they earned friendships wherever they went.

The second person l want to mention who is still very much in the land of the living after suffering a heart attack is Mr Dave Rivers, when ever l see him out at soul nights and nighters l always make a bee line for him to ask about this record or that record, l know l probably drive the poor bloke mental, but god bless him he put's up with me .

He was at Lifeline and it was great to see him looking so well, just goes to show you can't keep a good guy down. Also at Lifeline was Mr Dave Rimmer, Gave him a big hug and l know everyone else was happy to see him out after the loss of his lovely wife Margie. I want'ed so much to go and have a chat with him,yet did'nt quite know what to say, however l have since e-mailed him and we are looking forward to having a good talk when we next see each other......hey he even said he'd buy me a drink .

We have been to the last two Radcliffe all-nighters and may l just say how great they are, absolutely packed out, three rooms catering for all musical soul tastes.
But to top it all the dance floor in the main room at the end of the nighter is still buzzing, there is only one other major nighter that l see that at these days, and that is Lifeline at Brookfields..........................fooking fantastic.

Talking of Lifeline We (harpo and I) were asked if we'd like to do the first hour at the last one, we accepted and we had a great time behind the decks, l hope we did'nt disappoint the promoters with the choice of music we played.

Tony Foster also had his chance to shine at Lifeline, and in my opinion he played a belter, just a pity there was'nt that many there to appreciate it.....never mind Tony We were, and you were great mate .

Other people at Lifeline we had'nt seen in a long time were amongst others Paul and Claire Clifford, and Pete and Julia from Worchester............Pete had suffered a heart attack last year and it was the first time we had seen them since the Marr's Bar well over a year ago, it was great to see them, julia of course was in full swing and if anyone is wondering who the noisey fooker was doing the high pitch wistles, then l can reveal it was non other than JULIA. Pete looked fantastic considering what he'd been through. Friends like these are true friends indeed. .

Not much more to tell now, apart from only six months away from our big day......Sept 10th Wedding bells are gonna be ringing.

Another Day , Another Dollar,
Posted by sandi, 13 December 2009 ·
We had'nt been out since U.S.O.S. and had planned on going to Bishops Wood as we always do to show our appriciation and continuing support for this successful venue.....(you got to when so many fail too soon).

Yet with the festive season just around the corner, Paul being off sick for the past two months, and me stuggling to keep my work coming in as many of my clients are also feeling the pinch and making cut backs.....can't blame them either, as l work as a mobile holistic therapist, great job, good money, but at times of economical depression like we are all suffering through just now, l would consider that most of the treatments could be classed as a luxury.

So as saturday approached, l started to mention my concerns about wheter we should be spending money on an all-nighter, or putting it to a more practial use. This played on my mind most of saturday and l said "Oh Fook It, lets just go and worry about the rest later...." and l'm not usually like that because l always put priorites first. An allnigter is definately NOT A PRIORITY!!!!!.

Off to Bishops Wood we went, and if we were being wreckless as to the money we did'nt have to squander we thought it better to be totally wreckless in every way we could, and along with us came our big green holdall of party planned goodies, instruments, silly hats, bog eyed spectacles which Harpo sported, birthday boy of the night Mr Paul Gould, he said it took him right back,"my eyes used to look like that when l used to go to the Twisted Wheel" he announced, is there no shame with a comment like that!! l mean you'd never catch me doing anything like that..would you !!!.

It was a great atmosphere from the start and l was soon on the dancefloor with my electric guitar(well my grandsons actually),tamborine and jesters hat, doing an impersonation of soulful sandi gigging, with a whole lot of santana guitar work and my special tamborine Mick Jagger strut.

Gaye can you please let me know what that record was again, the one l asked you about......bloody brilliant track.

The music was outstanding from all d.j.s, yet l did'nt get to do too much footwork as the night progressed, for reasons that l think most of you will know about by now, yet l will try and report lastnights event in detail as it unfolded......bloody scary, made me sit up and think about, where l am in my life, and soul music as been the dominating factor, for almost 40yrs of it.
During to-day l have been busy, answering text messages, phone calls and e-mails, to people who were genuinely showing concern and asking about a much love friend and larger than life expressive dancer at all venues he attends, that man being Trevor Wright from Hinckley.

He is a very lucky man, lucky because when push come to shove, three strong independant females on this scene they being myself, Heather(affectionately now also known as Thistle), and Elaine, Larry's wife, also a major member of the promotion team at B.W. we all recognised that Trevor really was'nt well, and quickly his condition deteriorated, causing real concern and l made the decision to ask anyone who would listen to call for an ambulance, nobody really rushed l think they all thought l was over reacting...truth is l was in fear for Trevor, can't remember how many times l
requested an ambulance be called for.Eventually both Heather and Elaine made the calls.

We just ignored the guy's who for their own reasons out of true concern for Trevor wanted to get him in Fingers car, initially for some fresh air, but realising that it was more than fresh air he needed want to drive him to the hospital, thank god we managed to stop them as we had eventially found someone (our Chalky) with a mobile phone about his person, Heather made the 999 call and l believe so did Elaine....l was busy monitoring Trevors pulse which initially was racing like a train on a track at 145 bpm, he was shaking violently pains to his head, neck, abdomen and worringly pain traveling down is left arm, sending out massive alarm bells for me, then suddenly he just stopped shaking, gave me a vacant look and started sliding down the wall, me still grasping tightly at his wrist and l could'nt feel a pulse for at least 6/7 seconds, l know that is'nt a long time but lastnight to me it seemed like an eternity, l quickly gathered my thoughts of what would be my next plan of action and l started to prepare myself for administering CPR, very scary moment indeed, then he made this really loud gasping noise and began writhing around the floor in absolute agony complaining of an intense cramp like pain in his right leg. Everything was telling me that this guy in my opinion was having a Heart Attack, and his pulse had gone to the other extreme and l was finding it really hard to detect a pulse although there was one it was slow and laboured so was his breathing, this guy was in real danger and needed help and quick, l was still busy monitoring his pulse and breathing, and thinking if l can get him in a recovery position it might make him a bit comfortable...no chance the guy's grabbed him up off the floor and literally carried him to the car, not without very assertive and truely headstrong women stopping them from making what would of been a fatal decision. I don't know what Heather and Elaine were thinking at that crutial moment, but l was thinking of everyone and their best interests, l appreciated their need to help a friend which to all by now was obvious needed urgent medical help from the professionals. It's no bad reflection on them, nobody knows how they would cope in this type of situation even when you are trained sometimes you will make mistakes and bad judgement especially when the patient happens to be close to you, we are only human and do our best to help a friend who is in real need. I'm proud of everyone who helped because without your help and caring nature another of the scenes lovely men would now be a satistic. Just a word of comfort to all involved especially Johnny Fingers by stopping and helping anyone who needs swift responsive basic 1st aid, qualified or not, is far far better than standing by and doing nothing.

John learnt a valuble self anylised lesson yesterday, he commented that although he's good at dealing with situations and keeping a cool head, he said personally he felt useless because he lacked medical knowledge, and told me he would be joining a 1st aid class on monday....he also added he want's to do it so that if he were faced with that situation where knowledge awareness of the seriousness of what could of happened literally means that a life could be saved or not, he for his personal reasons was moved to take action. John you are a star, l know how passionate you are about the need to learn all you can about all the facets of soul music, so if you are that passionate towards learning 1st aid as you are for the music, then if l was ever in trouble like Trevor l would be happy knowing that if you were around at such a time you would do your best to help me.

When you are faced with doing what is right, like lastnight time was of the essence, it really was a matter of life or death, and that is scary.
The whole event happened so quickly, from asking Trevor basic need to know questions like are you Diabetic,Epileptic, or have a history of Heart Desease or Family related Heart Conditions......Food eaten, Drinks taken, and most importantly because of the nature of our scene Have you taken any Gear, what has been taken and how much, really pays to be truthful on this because it can help the medics administer the safest treatments again that would sway the balance on life or death.

I think we all tend to take life a bit for granted and really think we are invincible, l have read Trevors comments he put on face book about how he was so looking forward to lastnight and wanting to dance his legs off, human frailty play a hand and stopped him in his tracks, now l'm sure he did'nt plan for that!!!! Do any of us !

After Trevor was safely wisked off to Stafford General, and hours later Harpo and Fingers returned to the venue more information came to light, from Johnny Weston, John told Harpo that when he was driving up that really long road that seems to go on for ever before the venue comes into sight, he had noticed Trevor was walking up the lane, so he stopped and gave him a lift.........bloody good job he did because although it's hard to image the seriousness of Trevors illness l suspect would of put him at high risk of him actually collapsing in the ditch and god only knows if he could of survived that, it makes me shudder just thinking of how things could of turned out.

I was for some years not that long ago training in mediumship, l feel a strong connection to things spiritual and like Johnny Fingers now feels the need to learn how to save a life, l felt a need to understand things that were happening to me and around me l could'nt comprehend.

This learning has taken me to a better awareness of spiritual thinking and in some way l also think that the passion l feel for the soul music l love triggered another facet or dimention of being a soulful person, you may laugh at this comment, yet until you have walked in my shoes for 40yrs and experienced the truma and heartache l have then you can't really make a judgemental comment, how can anyone make any comment based on what they think rather than what they know !!!!

As l've already mentioned, we really did'nt want to go lastnight for the reasons l've given, and reflecting back on how events unfolded l really believe l was meant to go, not to be wreckless as l first thought but to be in the right place at the right time........l also think the same applys to John Weston... l can't explain it, yet l am a great believer in "things happening for a reason".

I really hope my next entry is a funny one:unsure:.

Be safe and take care, none of us can say with certainty whats waiting around the next corner.

Sandi xx

Technology Is Not My Forte
Posted by sandi, 29 November 2009 ·

It would appear it's not Paul's either, especially when it's the day/next night going into tomorrow morning having no sleep (due to stress ) from the night before.........if you can follow that !!!!!, l understand what l mean.

Anyway don't you find it's at times like this that usually it's the man that starts tatting with things around the house you'd rather him leave well alone until normal service has been restored, or is it just my man who does this !!!!, and do they listen !! do they hell!!.

So today l left him to his own devices, we had purchased on saturday afternoon a cd rom thingy,to programme the p.c. for the use of recording vinyl from the decks staight onto the p.c. and then for the purpose of downloading our collection onto c.d's. It all sounded quite simple to me, and l'm sure under normal working conditions it would be...yet not today, eh! Paul!!, No! that would of been boring, so upstairs to set up what was needed, you know decks, records, ect, went Paul, me l headed for the sanctuary of the living room and shut the door and played lots and lots of good records to myself, drowning out any crys for help or bursts of angry frustration from Paul.....usually at the rate of once every 5 mins or so, phewwww .

I had a great 8 hours, playing records to my hearts content, reading the odd true life story in the "Pick Me Up" mag, supping tea, coffee and the odd can of lager, and smoking like a chimmney, thats what sundays are for, a good rest doing nowt but relaxing.....Perfect, and then all hell lets loose, ranting and raving, apparently he had done really well and was successful in installing the programme, he enjoyed playing the records and being happy in the knowlege that they were actually recording onto the p.c., I think he got carried away a bit and went over the time allowed to download the set onto the c.d. so oooops it wouldn't burn what he'd recorded, kept telling him he was over by 1min something.... , no matter how he tried it just would'nt have it, it was a bit like watching the monkey, you know the one that sticks his hand into the cookie jar and grabs a handful of cookies and can't get his hand out, and fails to understand why!!

So here we are again still no nearer to sorting the problem, and Paul giving me a list of the records he played and wanted to share with you all.

Out of pure love for the guy and a bit of pity, piled high with tittering from me at yet another disaster when "it should of been left until at least weds"
I have agreed to list his play list for him on here.

They never learn do they!!!

Oh l've just noticed the title at the head of the list.

MY 50TH, PRESTATYN
I will start with my birthday bash, held at The Bushbury Arms , this was a great night as far as l was concerned, however still had the odd few complaining. Then ain't that just par for the course!!!!! D.J.'s for the night were Harpo, Shute, Johnny Fingers, Ted Massey. Myself and a great female D.J. with a fantastic collection Mrs Soul...our very own Lou.

All D.j.s played 1st rate soul music,( except to those who moaned ), Harpo started the night with a half hour spot, followed by me and lou, then Shute, Fingers,Ted, me again and finishing the night my lovely man Harpo.

I diliberately did'nt put Lou on first, because l believe her taste in soul music deserves to be heard when people are actually at the venue. God bless her she said she thought it was a privilage to be double decking with me, yet she also said she did'nt know how she'd follow what l'd play as she knows l'm into crossover,70's and through to modern. I just replyed "Lou you play what you want, enjoy it and l'll follow you".................there's this rumour on the soul scene that l and Paul(Harpo) only play disco music......NOT TRUE. .........l wonder who started such a rumour..... :g:.

I will submit the playlist for me and Lou a bit later in this blog.

Right ,now, down to thanking everyone who attended and brought me gifts, it was lovely to recieve presents from my many friends, yet what they don't realise is that by their very precence was the greatest gifts they gave me....THANKYOU GUY'S I LOVE YOU ALL X

Although l do have to mention two very special gifts that meant so much to me, 30p off Gary who said l could buy some sweeties with it, , and BIG MAD ROGER........Well his gift was different to say the least...........l must tell you all the sorry tale he gave me before he let me peer into the gift bag(the gift bag was lovely by the way, so for that l should be greatful).

He said "Sandi, l've got you a present but before l give it you l must explain that l had phoned Sean and asked him'what shall l buy Sandi for her birthday!!!!', he went on to say Sean had told him "buy her anything", so i did" he said............then he thrust the gift bag in my hands, "Happy Birthday" he said. I did'nt open the gift immediately l just gave him a knowing glare as if to say "What the fook you up to"!, everyone around us by then had developed the titters, so l bravely opened the bag.............it could of been worse knowing Roger.....yet in the bag was a fookin Pineapple:yes:, Roger was on his guard because he was expecting me to wang it off his head or shove it up his arse.....but l composed myself and played it cool, something Roger was'nt expecting, l gave him a kiss on the cheek and said " Oh how lovely, it's the best gift l've ever had", Roger was like eeehhhh "really"!, oh yes l replied, it's the most beautiful Pineapple l've ever seen , smiling sweetly at him...yet thinking , l'll get you back. And l have, yet l have'nt seen him since my party so he don't know it yet.

Not all my friends are like those two jokers, I had a rare German picture sleeve copy of Jerry Naylors "City lights" from the lovely Johnny Fingers(a lot of dollar), Two tickets off my very good friend Gillian to go the day of my birthday (10th Oct) to Prestatyn to see Chuck Jackson. Lou and Woody gave me three 12" singles, Shute also gave me records one being a rare 12" studio acetate apparently only two copies of this record...not gonna tell you what it is,yet Mr Fingers got a listen to it and he liked it.I had loads of booze (some of my mate's must think l have a drink problem.....l have l can't get enough of it . Perfumes and other smelly's were also given me and one very useful c.d. box. lots of other stuff too, flowers chocs oh and a watch from Chris and Ingrid, not to mention all the records Paul brought me, Milton Wright Demo, Jodi Mathis, Fred Hughs Demo, 100% Pure Poison . Can't not mention that Dave Welding and Louise gave me a demo copy of Skip Mahoney and he Casuals "Running away from love".

I am very greatful and honoured that l have so many lovely friends who cared enough to give me such fantastic gifts, thankyou all xxx

Remember l said we did have some moaners....well l actually said to one of them, "you know this is'nt a soul night, it's a 50th birthday party, nobody said it was going to be "a northern soul night", then l nearly said to this person "l'll tell you what, if you don't like it you can have your money back...then l remembered it was free to get in...because it was a party...ddeerr:frusty2:.

I must say at this point, no matter where you go, no matter how far you travel, no matter how hard you try.....I'll NEVER UNDERSTAND THE MENTALITY OF THE SOUL SCENE...OR RATHER THE MENTALITY OF THE MAJORITY OF THE PEOPLE WHO MAKE UP THE SOUL SCENE........YOUR ALL BLOODY NUTS ........And l mean that in the nicest possible way .

EXAMPLE:...........
I knew most people who came along to celebrate my birthday would assume that l would be playing just soulful house and garage, and to be honest l wish l had because we still had the MOANERS. The order of the night was 60's soul with some 70's 80's played(you know the type that get played in the oldies ...[60's only] room's ......with the odd exception of maybe one or two or three etc modern tracks, that because the oldies people like them, say it's okay for them to be played......., always does my head in that one, e.g."Tribute to betty" D.J. Genesis 2004/5, Ron Hall and The Mutha Funkaz "The way you love me" early 2000's Michael Proctor "Love Don't Live" 1996. l could go on and mention loads more ,but l'll save that for another day.

Anyway l diverse, my sole aim for my birthday was to give a little something back to my friends so made the decision to play what they liked, namely good 60's soul, and thats what l did, especially while doubling up with Lou...although Lou did say "I ain't got no 70's....and she craftily played The Pointer Sister's "Bring Him Back", l forgave her and followed that with Sister Sledge "Love Don't Go Through No Changes", now these are both "modern" records played and accepted in all oldies rooms up and down the country. So when l went on and did my solo spot, l thought l'd give them a mixed bag and go entirely across the board, that way all tastes would be catered for.......yeah rite, and still the moaners, in the end l just made a statement over the mic , l said " l'll never understand you lot..l've played 60's classics, rarities, newies, crossover,70's 80's and you're still bloody well moaning, well l only have one genre left to play in my box, so how about l play you a bit of ROCK music......(stunned faces looked up at me and wondered what l'd play)......apparently Rock music fills a dance floor where much asked for 60's empties it MOVE OVER ELVIS:elvis:MAKE ROOM FOR ..........Babe Ruth "Elusive" , I rest my case soulies are nutters.

Whats even more laughable is when the same said peeps who did the moaning, when leaving say "We had a great night ".

When the party was over we went back to our house and was joined by Johnny Fingers and Gillian, (gillian because she was our weekend house guest) where we just carried on the party....and not a moan was heard by any of us .

I apologise to Lou for the lateness of the play listings from my party, but when l got home that night/morning after, discovered that the note pad l'd been writing everything we'd played had gone missing, l did ask Benk if he'd found it at the pub the next day, yet it appeared it had took a walk and l know l have a good head for remembering record titles and artists, but l aint that bloody good.........yet tonight a miracle happened the book was found.....huh, in Shutes record box, the little monkey took by accident, he says .....:g:uuuuuuuummmmm.

The listings are'nt entirely complete so Lou if you can remember one's that l've missed, please post them on here.

TO BE CONTINUED .

O.K. l'm back.

Still aint got any sleep yet, hey but who cares..plenty of time for that when l'm dead.

With my 50th bash(Fri 9th Oct) well and truely over, we started to make plans for our visit to Prestatyn and l was very much looking forward to seeing Chuck Jackson live at the allnighter, all l kept saying was "I hope he sings 'All Over he World'", anyway he did'nt disappoint he sang it and so did everyone else with him bloody fantastic.

I have fast forwarded a little so l will rewind to when we arrived, straight forward enough soon found friends and seating area. I have forgot to tell you about our unplanned for travelling companion....THE PINEAPPLE l'd been given the night before......forgot to mention that on the night of my party some bright spark had taken the pineapple and gave it a face, so now it resembled a human looking being, but much more cute.We had to give it a name and because of it's spikey crowning glory we decided that it should be a he, his name Peter Pine. Like any carer we could'nt just leave him at home to fend for himself.......could we !!! We took him everywhere with us and he met all of our friends and told them that Mad Roger was his daddy. Most people think l'm Barking mad already, but now they are convinced l am, yet there is method in my madness, Rogers little prank did'nt give him the desired response, which in some way had already got those cogs for a brain of his slowly moving, he probably can't understand yet why he is'nt walking around with a permanent gait like a baboon's throbbing red raw ring piece.Let me tell you there is more than one way of skinning a cat, and this way is much more fun and entertaining. However the gezza wot's his name! fingy-me-bob who publishes Manifesto Mag did offer to give me his psycotherapist's number, cheeky thing him, l soon put him right and told him to give the number to Roger. Everyone took to peter and he was welcomed as part of the soul family.......eh you may think l'm mad, what about the one's who baby sat him while l danced my little legs off . I knew it was a pineapple really.....but did they!!!!!, some were even rocking it like a real baby .

Prestatyn although l would'nt of chosen to go to the November event, as it's not truely a "Soul as we consider it weekend" more hand baggers than true soulies, yet after saying that the music quality in the main room and the modern"Soul intent" room was top dollar, l did venture into the larger room at the back of the venue just to get served quicker at the bar, scary place that, lots of strange looking old men(and don't say "they are all bleeding old on the scene......yes they are :whistling:but you know where you stand with our old un's)....not all looked strange , but you could easily spot the ones who were there to snatch up a granny...if you know what l mean..

Must mention Dave Rimmer and his lovely wife Marg and give them a special thankyou for the gift they gave me for my birthday, those of you who know Marg will know she is Chuck Jacksons greatest fan, and the promoters had arranged for both Dave and Marg to meet Chuck, not only did they meet him but they also were invited to dine with him on the friday night.....How great is that for Marg, l was really happy for her, she never stopped smiling , l'm not sure wether she has come down from the ceiling yet. I think it's fantastic well done Marg. While they wined and dined with Chuck they mentioned to him that it was my 50th birthday and he wrote a personal message to me and signed it in one of the weekenders programmes, l was well chuffed. Thankyou you are STARS.:king:.

Well those were the highlights for me, and l'm really looking forward to Feb when Kenny Bobien and his beautiful and very talented wife Stephanie Cooke will be appearing live, great stuff, what a voice that man has......hey maybe if l'm kind to the promoters they will arrange for me and Paul (Harpo) to meet them....think l'll contact a friend in high places.

Lifeline at Brookfields riding stables, All Hallows Eve, or Halloween if you like, was again a packer, we love this venue and it just gets better and better. Quite a few turned up in fancy dress including Paul and myself, it was a fun night and everyone was in the party spirit, l'm sure there were a couple of spirit soulies there too !!! but thats another story.
At the end of the nighter we had a few friends come back to our's for tea/coffee and entertainment before making their long journey's home, Gillian and Ross were amongst them and they stayed until late monday night and it was a pleasure having their company.

This is the last part of my update...yeah l know, l can hear you all saying"Thank God".

One of my clients approached me some weeks ago knowing the kind of music l collect and play publicly(sometimes),and asked if l would be interested in d.j.ing at the pub she is manager of, well of course l was, any opportunity to get the old vinyl out and give it a good spin is an opportunity l find hard to turn down, so l accepted the offer and event took place lastnight, nice pub called The Pear And Partridge in Perton near Wolverhampton.
We went over a few weeks prior to lastnight to get a feel of the place and see what type of audience we would be up against, mixed cliental younger and old un's alike and very busy, after having a chat to Sam the landlady she filled us in on the info we needed, apparently one of her punters had gone to a "Northern" soul and Motown night that she had previously put on, and he was'nt a happy bunny, he complained to her and told her that the d.j. was'nt playing "Northern", l think he was a bit more fluent with is words, and l met the guy and his wife lastnight when he came over and introduce himself to us.

At first l was'nt too sure that the punters were enjoying the night and l mentally prepared myself for the onslaught of verbal abuse that l was conviced was coming our way........................it never happened, they loved us, and as they losened up they were dancing around the pub and really having a great time ...phew .

In fact they want us back again, and Rob the fella we met lastnight want's us d.j.ing at some of the local soul nights over that side of Wolverhampton, he took my phone number and said he will contact us within the next few days with possible booking dates........

So there it is folks, "keep knocking and the door will be opened", "good things come to those that wait", We have impressed people detached from the political bollox of the Soul Scene, and been offered a chance purely through merit and the love of the music we obviously exude.

Pete McKenna interview by Snowy

An interview with Pete McKenna author of real world books "Nightshift and "Who the hell's Frank Wilson", including news of a new forthcoming edition of Nightshift (several hundred new words added) and the screenplay for a possible stage/radio adaptation of "Who the hell's Frank Wilson"
Pete Mckenna interview by Snowy
Pete McKenna was 17 years old in the last few months of 1973 when one Saturday night he travelled by coach to Wigan with four friends. They were ready to check out this new club, an allnighter at the Wigan casino. It had only been open a few months but news of the club had reached them back in their own town of Blackpool. The coach parked up outside the casino. The four lads were full of anticipation and excitement. Pete recalls looking out of the coach window and caught the eye of two skinheads who gave Pete ' the look'. This was not a look aggression or anger but more of 'who are you'? 'are you here to fuck up our club?'. Pete tells me that several years later when the 'vulture cultures' started arriving at the club around 1978 that he found himself giving them 'the look'. It was a look that would communicate the questions why are you here, are you here for the right reasons, this club is special, its protected, if all is well come on in.
Pete has documented in detail his experiences of his first night at the casino in his book Nightshift so this interview does not need to travel that route. The four lads were not new to the soul scene, they had been attending the northern soul events at the Highland rooms at the Mecca in Blackpool for the past two years. But the casino was different. I spent a weekend with Pete in July where we attended one of the Kent soul club nights, had a few beers and over the weekend I conducted interviews with Pete in an attempt to find out more about his books Nightshift and Who the hells frank Wilson and learn something about one mans personal experiences of his time on the northern soul scene that begun in the early 1970's and took him to many clubs, introduced him to many people and many soul records.
So I kicked off the interview by asking Pete about some of the dress codes and fashions at the casino over the years. He began by telling me about the Fiberg trousers, these were big waisted and varied in flared bottom, upto 24" sometimes. They would also have a 1" turn up, 'always a 1" turn up for some reason' says Pete. Fred Perry was a main stay throughout the Casino years along with Slazenger jumpers. Pete recalls with fondness the faded wrangler denim shirts and bagatell shirts too. Sheepskin coats, great in the winter months and great for the scooter or 'chair' riders. And for the girls long leather coats and floaty skirts that would flare up when they danced looking fantastic. There was also a time when berets (with patches sawn on to them) were worn by both genders (although Pete says he steered away from that look!). The footwear was always brogues. There was a period in the last years when bowling shoes were worn too. Pete was a regular wearer of the Timpson royals and Adidas Samba's. There was also a period when the Dunlop green flash were in vogue too. Pete also recalls the como shoes from Italy, a leather shoe that looked cool. All shoes that allowed the soulie to dance too. Interestingly Pete told me that he never saw talcum powder be sprayed on the floor to help them dance. I guess this was something that was done at other clubs, or Pete just did not notice! Brutus and Ben Sherman shirts were there for the duration of the club too. The stereo typical look that the world media portrayed around the 1978/79 period of vests, patches, spencer bags and brogues was also there, but was by no means the uniform of the average soulie at the casino.
I asked Pete if the 79 mod look had any influence on the club. He said no. The club was not invaded by the smart set, suit wearing mods. That mod look was separate. Ive always been curious over the fashion questions. Being from down south I never saw any one with that vest and baggies look. I then ask if the 76 punk explosion had any impact on the soul scene. Pete's response was yes, but only because the casino held punk nights. And often the soul boys would have to armour themselves with big brooms and sweep and tidy up after the punks had gone.
I ask Pete about the atmosphere inside the casino. Again much has been written about this and it helps those of us that did not attend the club to catch a glimpse and get a sense of the club and that era of northern soul. But Pete does confirm the chaos getting into the club, the que's, the car park dealings, the aweful toilets, the sweat dripping from the balcony onto the couple of thousand soulies dancing. He goes onto to tell me about the provinces. He means the blackpool corner, the Burnley area and other groups(sometimes the wheel heads, these were from the old Twisted wheel club, shut down many years before the casino opened its doors) that would travel from around the country. Pete says he made good friends from all over because of the Saturday nights at Wigan. In fact in the fictional book Who the hells Frank Wilson he based some of the characters in the story on people he met on the soul scene. For example two characters Nicky and Gman who travel up each week from London, just like people Pete knew did so.
Pete tells me of the drug culture in the club, the use of speed (black bombers, dexy's etc). An area of contention it seems that has been denied by some involved in the club and openly admitted by others. Again, Pete just tells me of his experience of the casino. Pete goes on to tell me that people would sneek in cider. Not massive amounts, just enough to takes swigs of to help the pills go down. He does acknowledge that due to the no alcohol being sold on the premises this contributed to the fact that the club never seemed to have any violence. In Petes opinion 80% of the males at the club were footy goers, hooligans of the 70's even and Pete says 'but at one minute past midnight soul became the family.'
Of the Blackpool corner. Pete has a friend who has several tape cassette recordings from the casino. Theres loads of general chatter and in the background the songs being played can be heard. I ask Pete about the reason for the tape recorder. He told me they would record bits of songs they liked that were being played then take the tapes to record shops and record dealers, play them the tape and ask the if they knew or had the song. Pete says 'there were so many songs coming through'. He also mentions Mr m's at this point saying that ' many tunes were broke in that room'. Pete also describes Mr M's a little saying it was like a mini version of the main room. Ive never seen a photograph of Mr M's and ive not seen a great deal written but Pete states it was the room for the northern soul purist really '100 mile fast stompers' he informs. Pete also talks endearingly about all the casino djs Searling, Ellis and Russ Winstanleys contribution to the Wigan casino soul scene.
Over the weekend we discuss many aspects of the casino, far too much to be written in this interview. I want to find out more about Petes book so we talk about Nightshift first. This was Pete's first book and was released in 1996. It got good reviews at the time and mr Weller even quoted parts of the book giving the book his support (naturally, being keen soul fan himself).Pete also comments warmly about Paolo Hewitt who encouraged Pete a lot when he was writing the book and trying to promote it. Pete informs me that a new edition of Nightshift is due to be published.
Pete informs me that the new edition will contain several hundred more words and dip into some new topics like sex, footy and scooters. I ask him if the cover will remain and thankfully he says yes. Great I think because it says so much about the content of the book. Basically it's a picture of Pete's original wigan casino all-nighter patch with the red heart and the words heart of soul written inside it. The patch sits on a piece of denim (trousers) and has a few red and white pills scattered on top. I ask pete if he has any memorabilia from those days,' yes he says the patch was one but I gave it away to a friend who was a big supporter of the book at the time, and this was soon after someone else had offered me £800 for the original patch'.
We also chat about Pete's other book 'Who the hells Frank wilson'. It was after I first read this book several years ago that I emailed Pete letting him know that I thought the book was THE NUTS, brilliant, entertaining and simply original. And 'Frank' really was the first of its kind, released in 1994 it is a fictional tale of a bunch of people connected to the finding and losing of the ultra rare 7" 'do I love you (indeed I do) by Frank Wilson. It has everything in the story, gangsters (rare soul Ronnie hardman), skinheads (Jamie boy), a top female dancer Nicky and the key figure really Epic an over confident, insecure, likeable chap trying to manage his affair with the Wigan casino, speed and cut it as the new king of the casino dj.
I had heard from Pete that plans are in the making for radio and theatre play, I think the story deserves it and would appeal to many people, and not just people in the soul scene. We discuss the movie aspect and wonder what impact the two films due for release (soul boy and northern soul) will have. I say to Pete that I would love to see 'Frank' on the stage. It has been a few years since the well received production of 'once upon a time in Wigan' did the theatres.
Pete allowed me to read the screen play a few months ago and I told him it was awesome. And like the book it has got a great soundtrack too including the Dells 'run for cover', Keep on keeping on' NF Porter and the Vel-vets 'im gonna find me somebody'. So good luck with that one Pete and I want a freebie for the premier.
This interview is really an attempt to provide some flavour of Pete Mckenna as an author of matters concerning the northern soul scene, the Wigan casino and how his experiences give substance to the above mentioned books but for more info contact Petemckenna@hotmail.co.uk and he will respond...he is like that!

John Legend has teamed up with The Roots to push out a covers album with a difference - its actually quite interesting and enjoyable.
The album is made up of their takes on "socially/politically conscious Soul classics from the sixties and seventies".
As can see by the track listing below its quite a varied selection and is billed as being inspired by the recent US presidential elections.
Highlights from here being the versions of Baby Hueys "Hard Times", the take of "Compared To What " and the title track

The Gathering - Northern Soul - Revisited

Was it really 2 years ago that C4 broadcast this short 3 minute film featuring Stevie Cato on a trip to Soul Revolution?

Colin O'Toole the director of this short series of short documentary films has just posted all 4 fillms on vimeo. Seeing that the clip that was featured on Soul Source at the time was all a bit lo- fi it has to be a good excuse to revisit this tip top film and also highlight the others in this series.

Have embedded the main soul related one "the gathering" below

best viewed in "full screen" ( just hit the full screen button)

You can view all the four films in this series via the link below
and can read the full words (a clip follows below) on what the thinking and the aim was behind this series.

In 2008 I directed four short documentary films for the '3 Minute Wonder' strand on Channel 4. The core theme of each film centred on the idea of a gathering, be it a religious pilgrimage, a nightclub, a protest or one mans mission to save his town.

It was my mission to create these simple docs with a cinematic approach and as a reflection of how docs in the 60's and 70's even in the 1980's would have been shot on film using quality....

Can read the rest of the words and see the other films at the link below

Owls, Snow And Lil' Ole Me.....
Posted by The Golden 101, 02 December 2010
Sheffield Wednesday takeover, excellent news, a Saudi Billionaire? Er no....it's Milan Manderic. Oh well, at least he was the best option at the time and, we are fairly debt free. Bye Bye Co-op bank.

Got a really busy December with gigs in Stoke at the Queens, Basford on Saturday December 4th, the Christmas Party at the Westgate Suites,Westgate, Long Eaton, then the All Nighter at the Kings Hall Stoke 24 hours later on the 11th and back to the Queens,Basford for a Sunday Soul Session on the 19th.
Final gig of the year is New Years Eve back at the Westgate Suites,Long Eaton.
Details can be found at http://www.goldsoul.co.uk/ .

My colleague Richard Searling is launching the new Go Ahead label this week with two fabulous singles.
Both available through Expansion Records. A series of cd's too. I wish him all the best.

Where did all that snow arrive from? Oslo is warmer!
Looking forward to the New Year as my web sites are getting a makeover- plus we are working on new events in Blackpool, Weston Super Mare.

I will keep this month's blog to a minimum as I know planning the Festive Season is both joyous and tiresome at the same time.
Hopefully we'll run into each other at one of the Soul events listed above.

Have a great Christmas.

Until next time...Stay well.

Wittering Away.....
Posted by The Golden 101, 08 October 2010 ·
A heavy week or what. I am supposed to be slowing down.
Last Saturday saw the All Nighter at the Kings Hall, Stoke. What a turnout! The classics are still the thing, no question.
Looking forward to Oct 16 in Prestatyn for the Velvelettes, Tavares, Dean Parrish gig, followed by the Kings Hall,Stoke,Oct 22 for the Signal 2 night out and 24 hours later it's the Torch Revival, Tunstall.
End of the month its a quick turnaround for moi, with Long Eaton on the 29th then Costa Del Soul from the 30th. Should be fun as I have the lovely Evison's on the same flight!

Talk about planning....Richard Searling and I have the Winter Gardens,Blackpool in the works for Feb 12 next year, while generating a gameplan for the same name in Weston Super Mare on August Bank Holiday 2011.
Just love the new Bobby Sheen from his latest CD. The Sam Dees on Shotgun too.
Desperately trying to create a window(3 months!) to work on the final updated version of my book 'The Northern Soul Top 500 ala 'the definitive' at the same time scribbling my memoirs to create Right On Keep The Faith and all that. Is it too much of a mouthful? My publisher thinks so?

I think there's a story to tell of interest.....let's see if it happens.

Northern Soul at Lowton - The End of an Era - Fri 10th Sept

A few years ago I found myself turning into the Lowton Civic Carpark and looking at all the cars parked on the verges I turned to a mucker and said something along the lines of "you know what, do we sometimes take these places for granted, once a month Lowton just quietly gets on with what it does, never any fuss or dramas, just does its own thing.and its there on offer when ever you want it"

When I heard the news that it was closing, (have been told its due to the actual venue no longer staying open rather than anything to do with the event itself ) that question I asked came back to mind., guess I was guilty of taking it for granted, I suppose any event that is long running , any event that is regular and "always there" can and will be a sort of victim of its own success, even more so when its so good at what it does

Anyway, have had many and that does means many enjoyable nights there, and here's some random memories that spring up when think back :

The laughs in the broom cupboard (r&b room) down the corridor run by Pete Coulson, the time when CSC were on, the modern room, the adventures and games in the record bar, the regular rush to get to the bar before it shuts thanks to steve thomas navigation skills, the mike hump ear burning at hotel, the time we lost lowton, trevor nelson tv visit, the layout, the 3 rooms and corridors (you could f*** about all over the place, tip on high and all sorts), plus loads of other memories and laughs including the many djs that have caught there

main room -12th anniversary photo

Last one is this Friday

Will dig out some site links to past articles, photos, videos etc and post them after the details

Clip of a Review by Denny from 1997

...but, the best part of the trip was going to Lowton Civic. you might have read about it, it's been going for about a year and although it only runs from 8 'till 1 once a month it's Wigan in the early days all over again. it's easy the best northern club going at the moment - there must be about 1500 go. the atmosphere and the buzz is incredible. i met loads of old mates, there's no shit and it's like being smashed without gear !!

you name it, they played it. steve whittle (mr m's) was the guest dj. 2 sounds which really stuck out for the way they filled the floor towards the end were barbara mcnair's "your gonna love my baby" and (I think they always play it as the last one) terry callier's "ordinary joe" - words can't describe the atmosphere.

Clip of a review by that Hughes geezer 2004

With the event being a mini-niter at Lowton, the first time for a few months for me, could say were definitely in the mood for a good night, we tumbled out, boxes, flyers going all over the venue. With another 4 or 5 cars from North Wales was a fair old contingent.
Got to say always enjoy Lowton, always have a laugh and a good crack, plus the dj line up as with most events attend more often than not seems to be a good one, the days of in one door to main hall, then driven straight back out by "big name" djs who think "just a little misunderstanding" is what people traveled a 100 odd miles for, doesn't seem to happen anymore.Place was packed, knew Ian Cuncliffe was on, disappointed to find out he had to do a early one, so missed out..

Popped in the modern room and it was kicking, a big crowd, good buzz, quick look for wanted new releases, quick birthday greetings to Pete known as Bangor's modern soul man , who was celebrating his 40th birthday, so one of youngest of that genre. Quick word with Roger W out and about as a punter and enjoying himself,
Modern room what caught was definitely buzzing.

Down corrider to R and B room, Big Mick was on and given out some quality r n b, Later noticed attendance was bit down compared to other nites.Steve T had a spot in their later on, me and Johnny J made the most of attendence as this gave us great ammo when continuing our ongoing banter battle. But fairs fair as always dished out some great selections.

Main room was going strong, nice surprise to catch Soul Sam doing a set, but only caught last bit, stuff such as "If cant say anything good", a bit of 2003 gear, finished set off playing flip of Morris Chestnut which in his usual ethuastic way he just raved about. Tim Brown up next and gave out some great stuff,....Travels meant not much more main room details, snips between other rooms and even a trip out, memory says Andy D doubled decked with Dean A?, caught some great stuff from Bob Hinsley, pure joy to hear of Detroit Sounds Of Friction, plus stuff like Oz and Spurlings all sounded good.
Alex Jones on ? Didn't catch him but was told due on.Somewhere during nite managed to pass on all flyers for next Monkey, without setting out to.

A lot of record sellers and dealers there with a wide selection of stuff on offer, things were going well as spotted recent long want just got at 4 times price paid which always feels good. As managed to get rid of a fair few bits, things felt even better, best laugh was when was offered a cover up in some deal, it all clicked ....

The Soul Discography

From Bob McGrath and the people at Eye ball productions who gave us the R&B Indies comes the Soul Discography.

Three fact filled volumes to keep even the keenest anorak busy......

http://www.eyeballpr...ages/sould.html

from the website

Following in the celebrated footsteps of our Blues and Gospel Discographies, comes those much anticipated sibling triplets; The Soul Discography Volumes 1, 2 and 3.Employing the same session-based format as our Blues and Gospel Discographies, the format is set in the standard discographical layout, alphabetical by artist, chronologically by session/matrix number, listing personnel details, unissued titles and original releases.

The details of the vast world of recorded soul music is spread over almost 1600 pages in three volumes. The golden window of 1960 to 1980 is happily violated wherever necessary. A granddaddy clause is granted for those with proto-soul roots from the 50s and a lifetime residency for the brave and faithful who continued their careers past the goalposts, right up until the present time.

The first volume covering artists from A to F is available now, (536 pages, large format (8.5" X 11") Volume 2 and three will be published as soon as the final tweaking is done tweaked.

Nottingham Oddfellows All Niters Leicester........
Posted by soulsisterjane, in Memories of the Oddfellows? 31 August 2010

Hiya Soulie's

I just wanted to know how many of you out there attended any of the Oddfellow's niters? I would be really interested to read about your experiences there and your favourite memory?

It was where it all began for me........... and has never stopped being part of me !!!

I missed the twisted wheel and the torch and wigan casino. That has never done my head in because the memories I have are just as good to me as those memories you have of wigan etc.......

My first ever Niter was at the Electric Theatre in Leicester before Ali moved it to the Oddfellows..... That's where I first saw Mud dance and I was mesmerised by his soulfulness and by the way he danced. R.I.P Mud.... I miss you x x

So if you have a spare moment.... Wanna share a memory?

Keep the Faith

I was a regular, missed the first year though. The Vicar - Tony Clayton - ran it with Ali. Four of us used to go from Norwich, me, Sid, Calvin & Cookie. Great venue and always full up. Remember the Leicester Uni coming in and filming one night (anniversary) and it was bright all night from the lighting! They had to move it one night to another town (forgot the name) Great memories but they are very distant ones!! Mark C

It was Loughborough Town Hall, the night they moved it.

theres a nice thread on here about Leicester Jane. I loved it. Especially downstairs in the small room with the piano. Had some nights down there where I forgot to go into the main room again, I was having so much fun.

Leicester Oddfellows was my first true venture in to the Northern Soul night-life and at the tender age of just 16

I started going just after the 2nd anniversary event and never missed one.

For me it epitomised everything that was my teenage years with so many wonderful people from so many different parts of the country. It was full of prople of all ages from all races and a completely classless society.

It was a time of discovering new music styles including Modern, Latin Soul, 60's Newies and R&B. For me there was no better allnighter, yes Stafford was good, but Leicester was fun, a real soul party!
My memories may be rose tinted but the music that was discovered and played then is still with me and is still revered today.

Sadly I don't seem to have any photo's of how it was back then. Hopefully somebody will have some knocking around for us all to enjoy.

Along with the 100 Club and Stafford the Oddfellows was one of the great nighters of the 80's and where all the Firm from Letchworth; Baldock and Stevenage could be found spinning around the dancefloor and generally having a blinding time! It was also the first place I heard Adam and was blown away by his set, where, as pointed out above, you had the choice of the 2 rooms and many a night I would be torn between grooving with the Rockin' Rev uptairs (and his usual mis-cued records!) or given it plenty of welly with Keb downstairs and the whole Sixties Newies crowd. So many great memories (the bomb scare sticks in my mind: The Rev telling everyone to clear out whilst spinning Bob Relfs 'Blowing My Mind To Pieces'; casually announcing the Police would be searching bags and then watching the stampede to the toilets, led by one Rob Kearney (RIP brother) to down everything you could before making the trip down the stairs!) The anniversary video captures the nighter well, so many friends, so many great toons and even better times! I think I have a few of the pics left from the club so will look through the albums and post on here at a later date.
*Oh and if you look closely on the vid you'll see me with Gary Rushbrooke on stage in a rather fetching addidas black vest over white T-shirt combination - ah the 80's Soul fashion, what were we thinking!!!!!!
On a last note I would like to apologise to my Ex Nikki for leaving her on a hospital ward with a punctured lung to attend the anniversary night, such was the pull of the Oddfellows Club (where on my first visit I wore 5 pairs of undies because the name didnt conjure up a soulful image!!!!) Alltogether now - ' I like walking in the dark....'

i use to attend odd fellows and it was a favourite venue of mine! there use to be a decent following of soulies from nottingham use to make the short journey to leicester for this niter. I started on the scene back in 74 at the casino but i loved some of the venues around in the 80,s clifton hall, queens hall, staffford, hinkley to name a few! but odd fellows was my favourite !!!. Who remembers my close friends and rivals on the dance floor all nottingham lads and top dancers ! CURLY ,POTSSIE with his incredible acrobats u will see him on the central england 1984 video wearing black vest and trousers white head band, steve phyliss who went to school with me but a couple of years below me, and then there was myself and i won the central england dance competition 1984 the video you see on youtube. We lost a good lad from nottingham called shippo who was a regular at odd fellows also i had a little mate from west midlands possibly dudley area ? half asian kid called kenny, sadly he,s also passed away. Ive been back on the scene 2 years again and see mark freeman regular he,s lost his hair now lol !!! and idell shes so funny plus one or two others! on the stage at the end of dance comp is a mate of mine wearing white top and american army style cap cant remember his name now old age i guess but he was a good friend of mine back then would love to know if hes still on the scene or anybody else that might remember me from odd fellows ? mark hanson keeps in touch with me well for those who,s memory might be fading like mine ? im TOMMO and i loved odd fellows it was a brilliant venue ktf to all who attended there.

We've not had an out-and-out ballad CD on Kent for over a year and after 28 years of compiling, we thought that a retrospective look at the very best tracks was due.

Many deep, southern or ballad collectors may not have gone for CDs such as "Mirwood Soul Story" or "Dave Hamilton's Detroit Dancers". As there were gems of these styles within those and other packages, we knew they would be enjoyed in another CD setting. Similarly, other pieces of beautiful music from the Charmels, L.V. Johnson and Johnny Gilliam were on similar but deleted CDs. Picking a "Best Of" CD felt valid and to strengthen it even more, we are including a handful of recordings that have not been issued on CD before, in some cases never issued at all.

These newbies deserve the most attention as they will be fresh to most soul fans. Of the issued tracks, the least rare is the Quotations' 'It Can Happen To You' on DiVenus, which was a good seller in NYC on issue, though the current price tag of £150 (due to its Northern flip) would put the casual buyer off. Rarer is the Austin Taylor offering from Zell Sanders' J&S subsidiary Sprout Artist. That set-up was never known for production subtleties and the single opens as if in an echoing Harlem Church, with the chorus belting out Hymn #94 before Austin's tough vocal preaches his message.

The master tape contenders are of incredible quality. Bay Area songstress Jeanette Jones was probably only demoing 'What Have You Got To Gain By Losing Me' but sang it from the heart, which now means that an excellent Gerry Goffin co-composition was saved for the world, with its first airing here. Down in Nashville, Tennessee ace arranger and producer Bob Holmes cut a Gallatin act called the Paramount Four on a stunning group ballad 'You Must Leave Her Because You Love Her'. If you invest in this CD, I can guarantee that you will be singing along to this beauty with gusto.

From the previously released but now deleted pile we re-present the Charmels' brilliant 'I've Done It Again'. Featuring on the same deleted Kent CD was L.V. Johnson's 'Seeing Is Believing', which I now realise is right up there with it. Giving the track another lease of life also gives me the chance to correct the assumption that it is the same song the Mad Lads cut (also for the Volt label); it isn't and we don't know who penned it. I hadn't even noticed that it was over four and a half minutes long - it doesn't drag for a single second.

Personal favourites include the tracks by Phillip Mitchell, Loleatta Holloway, Sam Dees, the Modettes, Debbie Taylor and the bittersweet and haunting voice of Little Ann singing her self-written title track to the CD. If you don't recognise any of the titles, please rest assured that these are the best of Kent - that's going to be very good indeed.

The Gospel Truth - New Cd From Ace/bgp

This may be of some interest to people on the board Kent's sister label from the funkier side BGP is putting out this week a great little compilation of gospel soul and funk from the Stax label. It includes some of the more well known classics such as work by the Staple Singers, Rance Allen aand Joshie Jo Armstead with 'I Got The Vibes', but it also digs much deeper telling the story Stax's Gospel Truth label, and its pioneering amalgamation of soul and funk with gospel.

Highlights include two cuts from the amazing Sons Of Truth, Clarence Smith's fantastic outing on 'Sometimes I Feel Like A Motherless Child' the soul shugffling 'You Need A Friend Like Mine' by Annette Thomas and the astounding vocal harmonies of the 21st Century's 'If The Shoe Fits, Wear It'. This is Gospel music rethought in an accesable way, and often overlooked because it is on a gospel label.

As with all Ace/ Kent / BGP releases it comes with a lavishly illustrated booklet, and plenty of information about the acts.

By the 1970s gospel music was at a crossroads. R&B had incorporated its emotional energy to become soul, and the old-timey feel of much of the music was alienating younger audiences. But gospel fought back by adapting the sounds of contemporary funk and soul to their songs of devotion, and in recent years these records have become extremely collectable. Until now Stax Records and its Gospel Truth label had been largely ignored by those who have anthologised this music. With its high production values and the input of some of the Stax's finest musicians there really are some amazing recordings on the label.

Started by Al Bell and run by veteran black music radio promotions man Dave Clark, the Gospel Truth label aimed to capitalise on the success Bell had had with the Staple Singers, the gospel group becoming a pop sensation on the main Stax label. Gospel Truth would take existing and new gospel acts and give them the Stax makeover. The very best soul musicians in the world would take time out from cutting hits to create the music for a series of gospel soul and gospel funk masterpieces. It unearthed a star in the unlikely figure of Rance Allen, a man whose voice is in itself an act of God.

This compilation tells the story of Stax's move into the gospel field by choosing the best of the output over a five-year period, from the Staples' glorious template via Allen's unique voice through to a variety of gospel circuit regulars and one-offs. Allen and the Staples seem to be almost polar opposites, with the Staples easing up the words to bring you onboard, while Rance sounded just like a soul artist until you listened to the lyrics, which never eased back in their praise of the Lord. We have cuts from the sought-after and super-rare LP by the Sons Of Truth and Joshie Joe Armstead's 'I Got The Vibes', a Northern soul monster almost from the day it was released. We also have unknown masterpieces by the 21st Century and Annette Thomas as well as gospel great Jacqui Verdell's only recording for the label.

The 20 tracks reflect the sound of popular black American music of the day from the out-and-out funk of Clarence Smith to the proto-disco sound of the Howard Lemon Singers. The Stax team made these records as if they were making new records for Isaac Hayes or Johnnie Taylor, but their message was of spiritual love rather than the secular kind.

Why 60S Newies?

Just been pondering life, love and the 60s newies crowd. As you do.
And whilst doing this, I stumbled accross a theory, that I'd like to run past you.
I'm 46. Many Northern Soul fans will have been into 'our' music, almost as long as I have been alive. When I first could the bug, like many, its wasnt a gradual process, it was hook line and sinker from the word go. BAM.
And when I first visited local venues, I would have at home maybe 20-30 singles (Pressings) and maybe a Casino Classics LP. Or the Capitol Soul LP. So in the venues, I'd probably not hear many, if any songs I knew. Even if it was an alldayer. And of course that didnt bother me. I expected it. And I'd marvel at the older people in there, and their knowledge of the artist, label, where it was played etc.
Now I'd been into soul for about 7 or 8 years by the time Stafford started. Before then the only niters I'd gone to regularly was Yate, One at Swanage, Hinckley and Leicester.
At Hinckley and to a lesser extent, Leicester, I guess I'd be snookered behind the 8 ball when it came to knowing old tracks. I might have grown more knowledgeable, but while I might know that Terrible Tom was a Torch sound, I had no hope of experiencing that. And while I loved oldies, the taster I'd been given at Yate by guys like Dave Thorley and Ian Clark meant that Stafford was to be my favourite home. I wonder if this is because of the following reason.
We all started on the same page. It didnt matter if you were in the in crowd at Wigan, or if you'd been a regular at the Flamingo. When Keb, Guy, Pat, Dave, Richard etc played a first time out sound, 90% of the guys in the room had never heard it before. We were all experiencing it at the same time. I didnt have to sit and listen to mates telling me how much better it sounds in the big hall at Wigan, or in the dungeon where the Wheel was held.
So for the first time, in Northern terms, I was as much a part of that songs Northern Soul heritage, as the guys who first danced to the Gems at Wigan. And maybe, that was the first time I felt like I wasnt at a disadvantage compared to many of the guys I was travelling with.
Since then, my taste for soul has erred on hearing new sounds. Not exclusive to oldies. But alongside. And as soon as my enthusiasm starts to wain, I find myself looking for new sounds to hear, rather than old faves like Pookie Hudson for example.
So I'm just wondering, about people the same age as me. Does this make sense, or am I talking more garbage than a fella full of Green and Clears? Also before my time. We had crazy barbs. Much less fun.

Ain't Too Proud to Beg: The Troubled Lives and Enduring Soul of the Temptations

Ain't Too Proud to Beg: The Troubled Lives and Enduring Soul of the Temptations
News of a new book by Mark Ribowsky, entitled Ain't Too Proud to Beg: The Troubled Lives and Enduring Soul of the Temptations.
The hard cover edition is due out in Oct 2010 and is now available to pre-order via the usual outlets.
Ain't Too Proud to Beg: The Troubled Lives and Enduring Soul of the Temptations
Written by Mark Ribowsky who was responsible for recent books on Stevie Wonder, The Supremes and Phil Spector
Press blurb:
The Temptations are an incomparable soul group, with dozens of chart-topping hits such as My Girl and Papa Was a Rollin Stone. From the sharp suits, stylish choreography, and distinctive vocals that epitomized their onstage triumphs to the personal failings and psycho-dramas that played out behind the scenes, Ain′t Too Proud to Beg tells the complete story of this most popular "and tragic "of all Motown super groups.
Based on in-depth research and interviews with founding Temptations member Otis Williams and many others, the book reveals the highly individual, even mutually antagonistic, nature of the group′s members. Venturing beyond the money and the fame, it shares the compelling tale of these sometime allies, sometime rivals and reveals the unique dynamic of push and pull and give and take that resulted in musical genius.
The first book to tell the whole story of Motown′s greatest group, with all-new interviews and previously undiscovered sources and photographs
Gives the last word on enduring Motown mysteries, including the deaths of Paul Williams and David Ruffin and the truth behind Ruffin′s tumultuous romance with Tammi Terrell
Reveals the secret "can′t miss" formula behind the Temptations′ thirty-seven chart hits
Draws on more than one hundred interviews with the group′s associates, industry figures, family members, and most importantly, founding Temptation Otis Williams
Ain′t Too Proud to Beg takes a cohesive and penetrating look at the life and enduring legacy of one of the greatest groups in popular music. It is essential reading for fans of the Temptations, music lovers, and anyone interested in the history of American popular culture over the last fifty years.

Soul Junction Press Notes:

David Hudson has always been held in very high regard for the excellent southern soul releases which he recorded for the Alston and Waylo labels respectively.

It was during his time with Waylo that David was placed under the auspicious of producer Willie "Pops" Mitchell at his Royal Sound Studios In Memphis. Under Willie's guidance, David recorded his excellent 1987 album "Nite And Day" of which 3 tracks would later gain a 45 release.

A further album project was planned but before it could be completed the Waylo label had decided to pull out of the Royal Sound Studios, thus leaving the project uncompleted.

A total of eight tracks (with a long and short version of one of the songs) had been laid down but were left to gather dust in the vaults. That is until now, so after over 20 years of anonymity you finally have before you David Hudson's forgotten "Royal Sound Sessions".

We have decided to release the album on the format that it was originally intended to have been released on at the time, good old fashioned vinyl. Enjoy!!

here's the blurb from the hmv website

The Superb 4th Instalment of The Acclaimed Lost & Found Series, featuring 50 Stunning Never Heard Before Motown Treasures from the likes of Stevie Wonder, Brenda Holloway, Marvin Gaye, Edwin Starr, The Spinners Plus Many More.

Also included in the 2 disc set is a beautifully designed 20 page booklet with detailed sleeve notes and annotations by Motown connoisseur Paul Nixon plus gorgeous original photos from the Motown photo archive.

With no sign of the goodies drying up in the Motown Vaults, it's with great pleasure, after exhaustive research that we bring you the fourth volume in this stunning series that can proudly boast the release in total of over 200 vaulted examples of Detroit's finest sounds that astonishingly never made it past the recording studio.

Featured are the usual 'out on the floor' thumping Motown scorchers plus newly discovered ballads and sophisticates. Some of the greatest discoveries on this collection include an amazing unheard classic 'Why Don't You Come Home' recorded in 1968 by the young music genius Stevie Wonder.

Also featured is an absolute stomper 'Born To Be Bad' from UK Favourite Edwin Starr and possibly the most special discovery of all, an undeniable 1963 classic 'Three Times Loser' by the incredible Marvin Gaye, proving that despite the declaration that just about every vaulted Gaye track has been discovered, the Cellarful series continues to unlock a piece of music history.

Both Brenda Holloway and Barbara McNair close a CD each with examples of how artists explored their repertoire while there are more than enough core Motown floor fillers to excite and seduce the staunchest Motown fan.

This sensational 2 disc set proves that the Quality Control team at Motown potentially missed many great recording that could have become huge hits.

The mystery remains as to how these fantastic gems were consigned to the Motown Vaults, but their loss is your gain some 40 years down the road!

The Tempos Story by Rob Moss

The Tempos Story by Rob Moss
The TEMPOS Story
The lineage of vocal groups, male and female, in the 1950s and 60s can be as difficult to establish as any family tree. Line-ups would frequently change as individual members came and went, group names could be dropped and replaced completely or entirely different personnel brought in to replace decampers. On a few occasions in the 1960s several different groups, with the same name, managed to co exist. An entire book, devoted to the various and varied formations that represented 'The Drifters', provides a clear indication of the complexity of personnel peripety through the decades, and they certainly weren't the only ones. Legal wrangles over name usage, and performance rights persist to this day, affecting groups like the Contours, Temptations, Four Tops, Coasters, Drifters, Marvelettes to name a few. Some of us can still recall 'known' groups touring Britain in the 1960s purporting to be their more famous compatriots, and believing that the addition of a prefix like 'Fabulous', 'Original' of 'Fantastic' would, in some way, legitimise the ruse. The Invitations toured as 'The Original Drifters', the Velours came as the 'Fantastic Temptations' (later to become the Fantastics) and there were others. An expose of the practice even made it to the pages of the News of the World newspaper, such was the outrage. This could have all been avoided, of course, if the 'real' groups had come in the first place. Ironically, soul devotees would have been quite happy to see these same groups perform as themselves!

Local singer James 'Jay' Davis happened to perform with two Detroit groups with names that appeared elsewhere – the Moments and the Tempos. " I don't know if we were the first to be called the Moments, 'cause I honestly can't say, but Diamond Jim (Riley) told us to change the name when he heard there was a group out of New Jersey, or somewhere like that, with the same name. 'Cause he was kinda managing us then we did what he said. We were the same guys and we just became the Tempos." The (Detroit) Moments was actually started by Herschel Hunter in the early 1960s and comprised of himself, Buford 'Fab'Glatton, Sam Pearson and James Davis. Davis' recollections of the early years of his career have familiar overtones. "Growing up in the neighbourhood, all I wanted to do was sing. I would dream about being a successful singer and I would practice all day long. My first group at high school was called the Fabuleers. Everyone wanted to be in a group or make records back then. I knew Kim Weston growing up. It was me that introduced her to (future husband) Mickey Stevenson. I didn't even know she could sing! When I first met Herschel his brother Ty (Hunter) was already making records (with Check Mate, Anna and Chess) and he hooked us up with Robert Bateman and Herman Griffin. Herschel had been with the Monitors but wanted his own group. We cut one record as the Moments. Herschel wrote both sides. ('Don't take your love from me' b/w Happiest man in the land' on Hit Productions Records). I remember we recorded it at Earnest Burt's Magic City studios on Grand River. It was kind of a doo wop/rock 'n roll thing and it bombed. But it got us to the attention of Diamond Jim." James 'Diamond Jim' Riley was a local entrepreneur who ran a gym, specialising in boxing, as his official business and a 'blind pig' (unlicensed drinking establishment) into the wee hours. " Everyone knew Diamond Jim. He was kinda flashy. He always wore diamonds – even had one in his front tooth and had these big parties at the Driftwood Lounge at the Twenty Grand on his birthday. He liked our sound and signed us to his label – he actually had three. Big D, Diamond Jim and Riley's. We were on two of 'em."

Buford 'Fab' Glatton joined the Tempos in 1965 after stints as a member of the Martiniques and as a touring guitarist with several acts, including Jimmy 'Soul' Clark, the Superlatives and the Dells. "I knew Hershell 'cause he was in the Martiniques for a while in the early '60's. I believe that was around '61 or '62. We used to sing around town up 'till around '64 when things kinda drifted apart. I joined the house band at Phelps' Lounge playing guitar. Hershell and Jay brought me in." The Tempos first release on Riley's featured two songs written by Jay Davis, 'Don't leave me' and 'I need you' but Glatten's memory of them is clouded with frustration. " Diamond Jim rented Golden World for that session and brought Sonny Sanders in to work with Jay on the arrangements but he let Joey Kingfish mix them and Kingfish can't mix too good so we weren't too happy with how the record sounded. Jim really believed in us though and kept pushing us. Him and Herschell fell out though not long after 'cause Herschell didn't want to go out on the road. Things got kinda nasty and Herschell left.

I went over to Motown to sing with the Love Tones not long after that too. I did some background over at Thelma around that time too. I remember singing on 'Peace loving man' for Emanuel Laskey." Eager to maintain what little momentum had been established, Riley placed the Tempos next release ('I'll never forget' b/w 'Disc jockey paradise') on his Diamond Jim label. The events surrounding it's creation make interesting reading however, as Jay Davis explained. " That wasn't us. It was the Steptones but Jim wanted to get something out on us that he could take to radio and promote. When Herschell and Jim fell out things were quite disorganised for a while. In the end Billy Harris was brought in and Robert Walker and Jimmy Charles replaced 'Fab' and Sam . Billy had sung with the Dynamics and, man, did he nail our songs? Yeah, he was hot." The Steptones would play a part in the next Tempos release too as Davis recalled. "Jim had bought the track for 'Lonely one' from Johnnie Mae Matthews and we recorded it over at Golden World, but the group was kinda breaking up by then so Jim brought the Steptones in and recorded it with them too. I remember he used the track on the B side of both records and I heard that he leased it to Luther Dixon who was working on material for the Platters." With so many changes in personnel, it became increasing difficult to keep the group together. "

By the time we did our last release as the Tempos, there were just three of us – me, Billy Harris and Robert Coates. It was 'Let's stick together' and 'Don't act that way' and it came out on Riley's. After that we started touring around Michigan and Illinois and Jim got us dates down South as far as Florida with stops on the way down and back. We played mainly small clubs and took our own band with us. Mr. Bo, who was a blues singer, came with us and Don Mancha's brother Pedro came too as our manager. We would sing our own songs and some of the most popular covers of the day." When the Tempos played around Detroit they would usually 'open' for other acts. Some performers left an indelible impression. "We played Phelps' Lounge before the Falcons one time. Their lead singer 'Sonny' Munro was just like Jackie Wilson, the way he looked, and man, he could sing. I admired him so much back then. Another guy who was a real inspiration to me was Little Willie John. But he died in prison of pneumonia after stabbing a guy in Philadelphia. I guess he was sentenced to 15 to 20 years for that. He was a fantastic performer and real popular wherever he played."

As a familiar figure on the Detroit entertainment scene, Davis met, and became friends with, many local luminaries, including Richard 'Popcorn' Wylie. "I'd known Popcorn since teenage days and we worked together on two songs him and his writing partner, Tony Hestor, had come up with for me. ('What words do I use' b/w 'Look what I found' on Mello Records) We recorded them at Earnest Burt's Magic City studio over on Grand River with Popcorn's band. Popcorn was a great guy and real easy to work with. Him and Tony had so many songs. I was privileged to watch them working together one time down in Popcorn's basement at his house. Popcorn would strike a groove on the piano and Tony would come up with the lyrics …I don't know where they came from but he could find these killer words just like that. He was a genius."

Considerable mystery has surrounded the details of Tony Hestor's premature death. Davis shared his recollections. "He had just got paid for something around Woodward and Euclid and was walking a couple of blocks to the Latin Quarter to see the Dramatics. I don't know whether he was shot or stabbed, but they took his money and just left him. It was a street robbery. I don't know if they caught them or not. It was a great loss to us all I gotta say." Another aspiring singer to cross his path was Marvin (Jack Montgomery) Jones. "Yeah, we became pretty close. He married my wife's sister and we knew quite a few of the same people. He started out with a guy from Canada who had his own recording studio downtown. Then he got with Johnny Terry who was doing his own thing after leaving the Drifters. Don Mancha was brought in and him and Marvin wrote some things together. He got his last name from Johnny's business partner Don Montgomery and the 'Jack' came from JFK. He was a tall, good-looking dude with this rich, sweet voice. I would work with him to learn the songs Don had come up with. The one I remember best was probably 'Don't turn your back on me'. Man that was a good song. He was hungry for success but he didn't take good care of himself. He contracted diabetes in his twenties and had to have one of his legs amputated later, which kinda finished his career. I remember how he was suffering so bad. It was really sad. He split from my wife's sister (Claudette) and moved out to Madison Heights (northern suburb of greater Detroit) but was found dead not long after. He had been shot in the head." Some speculation surrounds Jones' possible involvement in drugs but Jay Davis is quick to refute this. "No, that wasn't his style. At least I never knew him to mess with drugs. When I heard about his death I wondered who would want to kill someone who was so sick. Then I remembered a conversation we had one time where he said that if he died he wanted to be shot in the head. He said he didn't want to suffer, but I kinda laughed it off, until it happened. Maybe he paid someone to do it – I don't know. He wouldn't have done anything bad. He was always straight up."

Davis' own career reverted to group membership in early 1970, when he formed the Final Decisions. " Jimmy Charles and I went back to the early 60s with the Tempos so we got with Al James from Chicago to form the group. Our first song together was 'Keep on walking', a song I'd written with JJ Barnes. JJ and me go back to our teen years. We used to do shows all over Michigan back then. We wrote it over at my house. JJ played keyboards but we wanted it someone to arrange it so I brought Mike Terry in. He really was a great arranger. All we gave him was a basic outline of the song. He listened, scratched his chin and within a few minutes went over to keyboard and started arranging. We met Guy Morosco around that time too. He was an Italian guy who had his own studio and was trying to start his own label, Bumpshop. We went with him and cut 'Keep on walking' and 'Hour of your need'. We also had 'I feel what you feel' and 'The pusher' on Love records which was a subsidiary of Bumpshop." Although 'Keep on walking' achieved considerable success in local markets and was supported by a number of 'live' appearances, the group changed direction again in 1975. "We used to go to this club called Ben's High Chaparral and the owner, Ben Cox, liked us and became our manager. He had his own label, Hi C, named after the club. We recorded two songs over at Fast Track studios with Leonard Jones that came out on Hi C, 'You got to be my woman' and "You are my sunshine" but we did other stuff with him too that wasn't released." Jay Davis' friendship with JJ Barnes was renewed in 1999 when they worked together on the 'Love Street' album. " I wrote all the songs for that album, some with Edwin Starr or with JJ. Don Mancha was involved too. We did some demo copies, but it was never released commercially."
Jay Davis continues to write and create music and is about to release his latest album.

The Epitome of Sound - The Story

The Epitome of Sound
In the 1960's, the Megatons were a Motown/Soul style group from New Jersey, USA who were made up of 4 musicians (all White Men), and 1 lead singer (a Black Man).
The instrumentation included; bass, drums, guitar, and organ. The group performed in various nite-clubs throughout Jersey and had a large following of fans. In 1967, three of the group members (Bob Ligatino, bass, Eddie Dill, aka Eddie Charles, guitar, and Eugene Thomas, lead singer, decided to make some personnel changes, and Mike Paladino, drums, and Joe DeJohn, organ, joined the Megatons.
Both Mike and Joe were cousins, and longstanding musicians, and had somewhat famous careers as backup musicians. Mike, on occasion, was personal drummer with The Four Seasons, and Joe played keyboard with Elvis Presley during Elvis' Las Vegas comeback period.
The Megatons, with a new drummer and organ player continued to perform playing the nite-club circuit. They rehearsed on their days off in Mike Paladino's mother's basement in Bound Brook, NJ. In attendance at most of the rehearsals was Mike's brother, Robert Paladino.
Robert performed and recorded with doo-wop, and jazz vocal groups in the early to mid 60's and had written some of their material. He decided to write especially for the Megatons, so, on an old beat-up guitar with missing strings, he composed 2 songs, "You Don't Love Me", and "Where Were You", which he sang for them. The response was positive for both songs! Robert expressed that he wanted to produce the group and record both songs, and that he knew of a newly opened studio close by in Bound Brook. The group agreed. Robert wrote the musical intro's for both songs, and worked with Joe in chord structure and key transpositions, while Eugene, created and sang the lead vocal, and the group arranged and played the basic track. Two female and three male voices, all local talent, would be the added background singers on the recordings.

The studio was built inside of the old "Lyric Movie Theatre". It was only a two-track studio, and even though all of Robert's recordings were done at 4 track studios in NYC, he knew that the Bound Brook Studio called Venture Sound, could produce recordings with a unique sound. There were 2 reasons for this; one was due to the expertise and credentials of the two partners who owned the studio. Anthony Bongiovi(Jon Bon Jovi's Uncle) was the engineer, and Tony Camillo was the musical arranger and orchestra conductor. The 2nd reason was that their echo chamber was located in what was the former men's room of the theatre, built several feet below ground level. The natural echo and acoustics were near perfect, and Robert knew this from his past movie house visits. The studio partners would also become part of the magic that soon would touch their lives and help shape their futures.
It was now late 1967, and the recording dates had been scheduled. It was decided that the basic music tracks would be laid down first, which would include the acoustic guitar intro and accompaniment. A demo was cut to allow for the lead and background singers to practice with. We then went back into the studio to record the vocals. After completing this part of the production, Tony Camillo was asked to arrange and add strings to both recordings.
Tony Camillo was a classically trained musician, arranger/conductor. Previously, he primarily focused on the Big Band style of music, and had played bass in small combos. He played a function with Mike Paladino in the early 60's and said he would never play rock-and-roll, because it wasn't his style of music. Now, a few years later, Tony was arranging and conducting for a Motown style soul record. It goes to show just how people change and events cause them to change.
The strings and horns were added by Tony Camillo, and Anthony Bongiovi did a great job in going from track to track on a 2 track system, with minimal generational sound loss. The final mix was completed the following week and a Master Tape created.
We now had a finished product, and Robert's intent was to find a label interested in releasing a 45 record with the support needed for its success.
It didn't take long to get feedback and offers. Shopping the record around in NYC, Alvin Cash, of "Twine Time" fame heard the demo, and offered to buy the rights to the record outright, and then Re-record it with another artist. We did not accept this offer, or future offers, such as from the manager of Jay and the Techniques of "Apples, Peaches, and Pumpkin Pie" fame to Re-record it with his group.
An offer was made by an upstart label out of Long Island, NY called "Sandbag Records". Their proposition from the two owners of Sandbag Records met our criteria for releasing it on a 45 within a specified timeframe, and for promoting the group by means of Record Hops and TV and Radio performances. Sandbag Records did not particularly like the name, The Megatons, so they asked us to come up with a new name. Bob Ligatino and his wife came of with a new name for the group, and "The Epitome of Sound" was it.

You Don't Love Me and Where Were You, by the Epitome of Sound on Sandbag Records were released in early 1968. The Epitome of Sound immediately began doing Records Hops led by the famous Disc Jockey, Dan Daniels from New York Radio Station, WMCA, along with top attraction recording artists such as the Left Bank, and Jay and the Techniques. A short time afterwards, they performed on The Upbeat TV Show from Cleveland, Ohio with Stevie Wonder, and again with Jay and the Techniques.
You Don't Love Me had reached No. 11 on the charts in Cleveland, and it looked like the Epitome of Sound was on their way to stardom! However, we were informed a few days later, that internal problems with Sandbag Records had emerged, and it appeared that possible bankruptcy was a possible outcome.
Well, all support for the record and The Epitome of Sound stopped as quickly as it started. The group broke up and then reformed as The Megatons. In addition to playing nite-clubs, Eddie and Bob opened their own recording studio in the 1970,s. Joe DeJohn, moved to California, where he still resides, and Mike Paladino, moved on to work with different groups, and then pursued a career in Sales. Eugene Thomas later became a solo act. Robert Paladino, worked with Nicky Addeo and Co. at the Jersey shore in the mid 1970's and then retired from AT&T/Lucent Tech. in 2000. Anthony Bongiovi, opened a recording studio in NYC, and besides recording some of the worlds biggest artists from Sinatra to Streisand, is a major innovator and developer of audio equipment. Tony Camillo, back in 1967 brought the demo of the Epitome of Sound along with his other portfolio of recordings to Motown, where he became Arranger/Conductor for Gladys Knight on her big hits of Midnight Train to Georgia, et al.

As I mentioned to Bob, '68 was a death knell for sweet sounding uptempo Soul 45's. As the USA were switched onto Vietnam, The Doors, Grateful Dead and on the Urban side 'Say it Loud, I'm Black and I'm Proud'
You Don't Love Me was discovered in early 1974 and re-named as Moses Smith to steer vinyl hounds from the real identity.
As an exclusive at Wigan Casino, it shot to astronomical fame within the Northern Soul scene.
By the end of the century, You Don't Love Me positioned itself at no. 7 in the Northern Soul Top 500.
Consistently spun, the anthem shows no sign of subsiding in popularity.
Oddly enough, I had acquired two quarter inch masters from Mike Szymanski at Sandbag some 20 years ago, oblivious to Bob's whereabouts.
As one of the original Wigan Casino DJ's in 1974, the record gives me as much pleasure today as it did back then.
We owe that to the unique vocal of Eugene Thomas and the creativity of Robert Paladino and of course to the Northern Soul fans who have made it one of their own.
