Wiganer1 1,097 Posted March 30, 2018 Mark Freeman runs the Nuneaton Coop All-Niters & Wiganer1 Promotions, we recently spoke to him about his DJ life and times. 1. How and when did you get into music and what were you listening to then? I got into Northern Soul around 1979 when it always got played in the youth clubs and local disco’s. 2. Where was your first DJ slot? At 16, I had a small collection of records and DJayed at any disco that I could play my music. Luckily, I met local DJ Dave Hall who used to attend Wigan Casino and did all-dayers in Town just as I was getting heavily into the music. 3. What was your most memorable DJ spot? Wigan Casino revival allnighter at Blackpool Tower. Playing in front of a thousand people was totally awesome and spinning my favourite Wigan Oldies in front of that huge crowd was a very special moment. 4. What so far, has been your worst DJ experience? None really , Every spot is a learning curve and every crowd is different and I enjoy the challenge of new audiences. 5. Your favourite scene DJ’s and why? I have many, but my top 4 would be 1. Brian Rae – who I believe is the best floor packing DJ the Northern Soul Scene has ever produced – he always know what record to get you on the floor. 2. Russ Winstanley and; 3. Richard Searling for all the classic Northern Soul tunes they played at Wigan Casino and finally; 4. Ian Levine a true one off on our scene , his dedication to keep new tunes even today utterly amazes me even after having a stroke he keeps on going. All very inspirational. 6. What has shaped your DJ sound and why? After my 3 visits to the last allniters at Wigan Casino, I was given 3 live tapes from the 5th anniversary and collected from the tapes. 144 tapes later I have nearly all the records that was played at the allniter. So In my spot I will play many records from this era, including many old instrumentals. 7. What was your best ever find/discovery? I am more of a record collector really, so I collect records from all eras of Soul. 8. Who was your biggest influence musically and your favourite artist(s)? I loved the Stax/Atlantic sounds when I first got into Soul. Wilson Pickett and Otis Redding stood out. But simply adore Gladys Knight and all of her repertoire. 9. Do you collect specific labels/artists/genres? I have all the UK Red Atlantic releases, all the UK Northern reissue; labels like Grapevine, Destiny and the Casino Classic etc. I have OCD so have to get them all lol. I also have a large collection of Motown, uptempo 70s & 80s soul and Stafford era Northern. 10. Where can folks currently catch your DJ set? I run the All-Night Soul Sessions at the Nuneaton Coop in Warwickshire. We’re coming up to our 12th Anniversary in Apri, and naturally I’m very proud of what I’ve achieved here and we have also had 3 live artists and even been on the TV. 11. What is the record you would most like to own? A couple of Northern Classics still elude me but every Northern DJ wants an Eddie Parker – I’m gone on Awake. 12. Please give us a top 10 all-time favourites and a current top 5 spins? Top 10 Tracks of All Time: 1. Chapter Five – You can’t mean it – UK CBS 2. August & Deneen – We go together – ABC 3. Rubin – You’ve been away – Kapp 4. Eddie Holman – Night to remember – Salsoul 5. Fidels – Try a little harder – Keymen 6. Kelly Garrett – Loves the only answer – Smash 7. Barbara Lewis – I remember the feeling – Atlantic 8. Bobby Hebb – You want to change me – Phillips 9. Elusions – You didn’t have to leave – Lamon 10. Wind – Grooving with Mr Bloe Current Top 5 1. Chuck Roberts – Hello – MGM 2. 9th Street Exit – Lets make sweet harmony – Solid Foundation 3. Sheepherders – We got that – Nottingham Records 4. Surf Symphony – Night of the lions – Capitol 5. Ike & Tina Turner – Strange – Sonja 3 Link to comment
