About The Event

The return of the Ashton Ukrainian continues after a few fabulous nights in 2021 and we're hoping for another great installment.

If you haven't been before here's a potted history from our very own Chris Churm:

The club was originally based at the  Dukinfield Masonic hall, starting well in January 2017  attended by around 100 guests. Resident DJs were Brian Lester, Chris Churm and Chris Penn.

The venue was great with a large dance floor  and ran until May 2017 when it moved to the Ukrainian Club, a slightly smaller venue (capacity 130) perfect the type of night we were trying to run delivering a mix of lesser known, rare and under played soul; a bit of everything.

The  first date  was June 2017 and was a  great night musically. January 2020 was the 3rd anniversary with guests Phil wainwright and Alex Jones,  respected collector/ DJs to entertain us with their fantastic collections and they were superb, and it was one of our best nights.

Following that in Feb 2020  Les Harrison (one of our regular DJs) and Geoff Stubbs of Stockport were our guests and were excellent as usual .

I must  thank Les Harrison and sue  who were at our first night in 2017 and have only missed the odd one when he has been booked to DJ at Culcheth and our dates unfortunately clashed . He has also helped us to sort the gremlins in the sound system on a few occasions.

Sadly  Brian Lester  who used to play some great tracks decided to bow out from the scene  and our other original DJ maestro Chris Penn moved to the  north east, he  will be missed ,but he has assured us he will be back to annoy us from time to time to DJ for us. .

Here is a list of some of the guys and girls that have played for us and have all taken part in the spirit of our humble Ukrainian club soul evening.

Carl and Maria Willingham, John Hillel, Dave Hall, Chris Penn, Brian Lester, Les Harrison, Derek Watmough, Ian Cunliffe,  Dave Beech, Carol Burgess, Simon Ingham, Mick Howard, Carol-Ann McCarthy, Geoff Stubbs, Geoff Buckley, Tom Dacey, John Baggaley, Dave Flynn, Les Hare, Mark Tobin, Ged Gibbons and Phil Etchells  (sorry if I missed anyone).

As we all know  in March  2020 (just as our guests  Simon Ingham and Mick Howard  were ready to  DJ for us) the pandemic struck and everything stopped but the restart will pick up where we left off and  Simon alongside Mick will be our first guests, hopefully we can bounce back .

Post pandemic the club have informed us that for the night to continue it will have to be a Saturday night event, ironically that is what we first wanted and we think could be better for everyone so keep an eye on the soul source calendar for future instalments.

We hope everyone is well and can’t wait to see you all again

After a b*stard of a week on the road and it was looking like I wouldn't get out last night.  But after finishing at 6, I was home for seven and out the door for 7.50.   Flew o'er tops to Simon's and we were in the club at about 8.30 and sinking a well earned pint.  My first time here and very impressed, full when we got there and I think Chris Churm was on the decks.  John Baggaley & Dave Flynn followed I think.  All three played imaginative sets which were well appreciated buy those in attendance.  Phil Threlfall pulled out a set of some absolute monster northern soul you seldom hear anywhere and Derek Watmough saw the night out with another excellent imaginative set.

A very refreshing night, don't recall hearing many if any classics or same old same you hear at too many venues but what was played was very much appreciated as was shown with a full dance floor for most of the night.

Superb to see some more friends I hadn't seen for over two years and some meeting some for the first time as well, nice to see the legend that is Matchy looking well.

I will definitely be back next month, my shifts fall right.  If you haven't been give it a try you won't be disappointed.

Thanks to Simon for waiting for me and again for his hospitality, top mate.

Top Drawer night at Ashton Ukrainian Club, another busy night!! More new faces loving the vibe, some amazing sets from all the DJs Our resident doorman Phil played some interesting stuff in the first hour, mixed in with some classic rare soul. Main man Chris Churm played his usual quality mix, followed by Dave Flynn and John Baggaley double decking Vickie Labbatt, San Franciscan TKOs, Jessie James "if you want a love affair" sounding great all over again.

Phil Threlfall was on top form Prophets "one gold piece" Honey Bees,Eddie Billups "ask my heart" causing havoc on the dance floor!!

Derek Watmough finished the night off with a nice mix of crossover and classic 60s dancers like Kenny Gamble "ain't it baby"

We really appreciate people travelling from far and wide, nice to see Jumping Joan out and about on the dance floor Shirley Wood Chalky Big Mick and many more. You all make the night what it is and as ever a busy dance floor right to the last record !!

The next date for your Diary Saturday May 21st looking forward to Baz Maleady and Chris Penn former resident at The Ukrainian Club joining us behind the decks.

Keep your eyes on the event page on here and soul-source for more information !!

Thanks so much to Brian, Chris et al for asking me to play a few records, absolutely great lads! Good, appreciative crowd in and I really enjoyed everyone's sets across the night;  as has been said already, it's always nice not to hear the same old sounds on a bleedin' loop when you go out.

Was great to catch up with Chalks and one or two other old lags and fantastic to have the pleasure of Tony n Joan's company again after two long years. I've so missed that unbridled enthusiasm and the much needed quality control they bring to my table.

Apologies if you asked for sommat and I didn't have it with me / forgot to play it / couldn't find it: can't see, deaf as a post and can't remember anything that happened more than about 4 seconds ago these days. To paraphrase Mike Tyson, I had a plan then took the lid off in the dark ... ...

Will continue to get down and support the night whenever we possibly can.

Another great night at the Ukrainian club. Fabulous sets from all and appreciative room full of lovely folk. Lovely to catch up again with more fellow soulies after 2 years.

Unfortunately going to miss Chris' return next month due to a friend's 60th however sure it will be another top notch night.

it's was a 'chilled'-relaxed vibe, but don't get me wrong...plenty to get you on the floor.

great sets by all.

I'm not sure I can add any more value than the reviews already posted - all I can say is I had a fantastic night of music and great company, and that's about all I need anyway

Don't miss out on next months installment with the return of Chris Penn and one of the scenes most underrated dark horse DJs; Baz Maleedy (not just a modern DJ or pretty face, trust me!)

See you all May 21st
