About The Event

The return of the Ashton Ukrainian continues after a few fabulous nights in 2021 and we're hoping for another great installment.

If you haven't been before here's a potted history from our very own Chris Churm:

The club was originally based at the  Dukinfield Masonic hall, starting well in January 2017  attended by around 100 guests. Resident DJs were Brian Lester, Chris Churm and Chris Penn.

The venue was great with a large dance floor  and ran until May 2017 when it moved to the Ukrainian Club, a slightly smaller venue (capacity 130) perfect the type of night we were trying to run delivering a mix of lesser known, rare and under played soul; a bit of everything.

The  first date  was June 2017 and was a  great night musically. January 2020 was the 3rd anniversary with guests Phil wainwright and Alex Jones,  respected collector/ DJs to entertain us with their fantastic collections and they were superb, and it was one of our best nights.

Following that in Feb 2020  Les Harrison (one of our regular DJs) and Geoff Stubbs of Stockport were our guests and were excellent as usual .

I must  thank Les Harrison and sue  who were at our first night in 2017 and have only missed the odd one when he has been booked to DJ at Culcheth and our dates unfortunately clashed . He has also helped us to sort the gremlins in the sound system on a few occasions.

Sadly  Brian Lester  who used to play some great tracks decided to bow out from the scene  and our other original DJ maestro Chris Penn moved to the  north east, he  will be missed ,but he has assured us he will be back to annoy us from time to time to DJ for us. .

Here is a list of some of the guys and girls that have played for us and have all taken part in the spirit of our humble Ukrainian club soul evening.

Carl and Maria Willingham, John Hillel, Dave Hall, Chris Penn, Brian Lester, Les Harrison, Derek Watmough, Ian Cunliffe,  Dave Beech, Carol Burgess, Simon Ingham, Mick Howard, Carol-Ann McCarthy, Geoff Stubbs, Geoff Buckley, Tom Dacey, John Baggaley, Dave Flynn, Les Hare, Mark Tobin, Ged Gibbons and Phil Etchells  (sorry if I missed anyone).

As we all know  in March  2020 (just as our guests  Simon Ingham and Mick Howard  were ready to  DJ for us) the pandemic struck and everything stopped but the restart will pick up where we left off and  Simon alongside Mick will be our first guests, hopefully we can bounce back .

Post pandemic the club have informed us that for the night to continue it will have to be a Saturday night event, ironically that is what we first wanted and we think could be better for everyone so keep an eye on the soul source calendar for future instalments.

We hope everyone is well and can’t wait to see you all again

Well in the middle of holiday season in what is traditionally a TOUGH month for venues. How wrong were we? A really strong turn out for the event. Some killer tunes on offer!! Nice to see some more first timers at the event Paul Baldwin and Dave Holt two quality guys responsible for the legendary Lowton Civic Hall events. Flat Top Tony was back on his old stomping ground, nice to see you back mate. The pleasing thing was the lounge area was nearly as busy as the main room. Some memorable stories and catch ups I bet!!

Phil kicked off the night in fine style, some quality classics mixed in with a few tasty mid tempo dancers. Nice to see Brian Lester back behind the decks, sharing the hour with Chris Churm, after all these are the two guys whose vision and foresight started the whole event up. Some choice cuts from the boxes, Tony Hester, The Arabians, Bobby Hutton and many more!!

John Hillel jumped off the sick bed to play his usual quality mix  Moments "baby I want you, Mixed Feelings "Sha la la" my request (thank you kind sir) Paul Shirley followed, with an hour of so many Big Hitters Eddie Billups, Fluorescent Smogg, Magnetics, Celebrities on Boss.

My turn to finish the night after a false start (the equipment had quality overload) lol we were soon up and running again and really nice to see a busy dancefloor right to the last record, many thanks it really is appreciated !!

The next date for your diary is Saturday August 20th when we welcome Yorkshires's finest Mr Phil Dick, joining Simon Ingham, Paul Johnson and Chris Churm behind the decks!! As ever keep your eyes on the events page for more details!

The Ashton Ukrainian Soul club goes from strength to strength in my opinion. This was probably the best soul event I've attended since moving to Greater Manchester. Musically it was like a good allnighter without having to stay up all night with the inevitable tiredness and comedown.

Sandy and I would like to thank Derek and Janet Watmough for the lift they gave us and to Paddy for his company and banter, Good to see our friends there and I'm getting to know other people as well.

I did try to note down some tunes played but gave up after filling up three flyers. Some big tunes played included Sha La La, Fascinating Girl, Shake Cheri, My Love Is So Strong and Wrapped Around Your Finger, all favourites of mine. Others played included That's How Heartaches Are Made (not Baby Washington's, not sure who it was); Come See; Always; Envy; I'll Be Your Champion; Birth Of A Playboy; Hey It's Love; Harlem Rumble; When You're All Alone; It Was True; There's Got To Be A Loser; Your Wish Is My Command; Naughty Boy; Your Love Leaves Me Lonely; Count The Days; Lady In Green; and so many others, don't want to bore people. The last record played was the Sparkels' Try Love.

A good turnout, nice to be with like minded people who enjoy good soul music.

Thanks to the organisers, the club staff and the DJs, Looking forward to the next one.
