About The Event

The return of the Ashton Ukrainian continues after a few fabulous nights in 2021 and we're hoping for another great installment.

If you haven't been before here's a potted history from our very own Chris Churm:

The club was originally based at the  Dukinfield Masonic hall, starting well in January 2017  attended by around 100 guests. Resident DJs were Brian Lester, Chris Churm and Chris Penn.

The venue was great with a large dance floor  and ran until May 2017 when it moved to the Ukrainian Club, a slightly smaller venue (capacity 130) perfect the type of night we were trying to run delivering a mix of lesser known, rare and under played soul; a bit of everything.

The  first date  was June 2017 and was a  great night musically. January 2020 was the 3rd anniversary with guests Phil wainwright and Alex Jones,  respected collector/ DJs to entertain us with their fantastic collections and they were superb, and it was one of our best nights.

Following that in Feb 2020  Les Harrison (one of our regular DJs) and Geoff Stubbs of Stockport were our guests and were excellent as usual .

I must  thank Les Harrison and sue  who were at our first night in 2017 and have only missed the odd one when he has been booked to DJ at Culcheth and our dates unfortunately clashed . He has also helped us to sort the gremlins in the sound system on a few occasions.

Sadly  Brian Lester  who used to play some great tracks decided to bow out from the scene  and our other original DJ maestro Chris Penn moved to the  north east, he  will be missed ,but he has assured us he will be back to annoy us from time to time to DJ for us. .

Here is a list of some of the guys and girls that have played for us and have all taken part in the spirit of our humble Ukrainian club soul evening.

Carl and Maria Willingham, John Hillel, Dave Hall, Chris Penn, Brian Lester, Les Harrison, Derek Watmough, Ian Cunliffe,  Dave Beech, Carol Burgess, Simon Ingham, Mick Howard, Carol-Ann McCarthy, Geoff Stubbs, Geoff Buckley, Tom Dacey, John Baggaley, Dave Flynn, Les Hare, Mark Tobin, Ged Gibbons and Phil Etchells  (sorry if I missed anyone).

As we all know  in March  2020 (just as our guests  Simon Ingham and Mick Howard  were ready to  DJ for us) the pandemic struck and everything stopped but the restart will pick up where we left off and  Simon alongside Mick will be our first guests, hopefully we can bounce back .

Post pandemic the club have informed us that for the night to continue it will have to be a Saturday night event, ironically that is what we first wanted and we think could be better for everyone so keep an eye on the soul source calendar for future instalments.

We hope everyone is well and can’t wait to see you all again

Another great night at The Ukrainian Club, a packed house and we say it every month, BUT it just gets better and better, with more new faces, lapping up the atmosphere.

Great sets by all ,the usual classy opening set from Phil. Derek Watmough followed playing some classy crossover dancers, mixed in with some great forgotten oldies and as promised played Archie Bell 1000 wonders for Stu and Katie's anniversary, a nice touch.

Paul Shirley followed with a full hour of jaw dropping rare 45s, too many to mention !!

Chris Penn followed with an extended set and boy was he enjoying himself, on his return behind the decks. A busy dance floor through out, quality was the watchword, all styles, mixing the tempos!!

Chris Churm finished a truly great night in fine style, finishing with one of my all time favourites The Dells "make sure" (spine tingling)

Christmas comes early to the Ukrainian Club in December, due to club commitments, we switch from the usual third saturday in the month to Saturday December 10th.

Watch out for more details of that on the events page, real soon

Last Saturday's Ukrainian Soul Club was literally something for everyone who loves Northern Soul with the exception of those who exclusively wish to hear the NS top 100; An absolutely fantastic mix of music, both well known and rare, just what I like.

First though I will thank Derek and Janet Watmough for giving Sandra Green and myself a lift there, otherwise it would be an impossible journey. For Sandy it was her first trip out to a soul night since her hip replacement operation a few weeks ago. She's still using crutches so no chance of her getting on to the dance floor but no doubt she'll be back there soon.

Also good to see my 100 Club friend Kev there, he'd made the trip from Kent to Manchester especially for this night, glad to say he enjoyed it.

Unfortunately the main guest John Parker was ill so couldn't attend. However he had a very able replacement in Paul Shirley. What a phenomenal collection he's got, all were on my favourites' list and kept me dancing. But all the DJs did an excellent job keeping the audience happy, thank you so much.

A real wealth of soul was played, no repeats as far as I remember; tunes included Alone With No Love (heard that out a few times lately after years not hearing it at all); A 1000 Wonders; Welcome To Dreamsville; Make Up Your Mind; Fear Not; Doin' Me Right; Oh Gee How I Miss Him; Ask My Heart; My Love Is So Strong; I Just Can't Speak; Lady In Green; Count The Days; The Good Got To Suffer For The Bad; Pushed Out Of The Picture; Can't Get Over These Memories; Strange Change and many others.

Finally time for us to go home to the strains of Make Sure after a very satisfying evening.

Great to see so many friends there, all united by our love for the music.

Thanks to all who organise this night and the DJs, and the staff of the club.
