Which DJ has had the biggest impact on you and helped shape your interest in the music the most?

Myself, I'm gonna go for Adam (Buchanan) at the Leicester Oddfellows allnighters in the early 80s. Adam was on his own for a long time at the venue as a Modern DJ and I think he took a lot of stick for it! There was some pretty famous 6os record collections goin' on behind the decks in Leicester at the time... but Adam dared to do something different... he certainly showed me (and many others) the light and the diversity of this music of ours.

No, Plaistow. It was all fields back then apparently....

......but the DJ who inspired me most from then on was Ian Clark at the 100club.

His spots at 6t's were what kept me comeing back for more

Robbie Vincent has had the biggest impact on me and helped shape my interest in soul music from 70's & 80's, maybe not a northern soul d.j but he certainly  played a diverse mixture of music 20+ years ago.

I never understood why you could have better but not worser!?

In the early 80's for me it was Mark Bicknell & Mark White who were the first DJ's locally who were playing some of the best 60's newies, rediscovered oldies & cover ups in the country......but the DJ who inspired me most from then on was Ian Clark at the 100club.

His spots at 6t's were what kept me comeing back for more especially him playing The Empires "Your on top girl" covered up as Johnny Copeland(I think thats right?!) back to back with  Jefferey Osbournes "Dont you get so mad about it" as a new release!...He seemed to be the only person back then who played "across the board" spots without a complex!!.........

His input at the decks is a big loss.........

Remus, thanks for your kind words re myself and Mark White makes me feel very humble for the mention, that was along time ago mate, as i've stated on here and in numerous publications 'Ian' was the man then, forever and always without question he inspired me way back, so the period you were talking about the very early 80's i tried my best as Mark did to fall onto records like Gene Toones, Empires,Cashmeres,Bobby Kline,George Freeman,Ron Baxter, Sam Fletcher etc.etc. but Ian always had the edge on most of the DJ's of that period, i only wish he was still out there doing it and like you say not only a fantastic DJ but a top bloke and a man i'm proud to know and a real friend.

I think I'd nominaet Richard Searling for someone with broad all era taste and has pushed music no matter what the date of the tune is.

Got to say mine was Tony Dellar, if it hadn't been for him at the Howard Mallett a lot of East Anglian soulies wouldn't be around today as we would never have got introduced the music we love.

Someone has also mentioned the dj`s at their local youth club and I agree that all those years ago it was my youth club that introduced me to proper soul but I have forgotten their names.

Nowt new in my post, got to be Searling pour moi for giving me those years and those tunes, late 70' early 80's.

Searling played for about two hours on the radio at the Blackpool weekender some years ago, I can confidently say that in those two hours he played some of the finest soul music I've heard spanning all decades.

Just a thought, as Richard Searling seems to be the favoured soul d.j on this thread I wonder who he regards as his mentor/influences

The quality of music being played by Chris Anderton (how could someone so young be so knowledgeable), Steve Smith, and others was fantastic. They were so open minded, anything went as long as the quality was good. Had some good nights since but I'll never forget those Bretby Friday nights.

I would love to get steve back for this one! I`ve been asked to do a one off for a few years now but its 10 years since i stopped promoting the venue so I gave in...... thanks again for your coments.
