Ha ha sorry Ken hatsoff2.gif I wasn't having a go at you at all mateno.gif I was grateful that you had posted Pet to give me the chance to hear it , but personally i thought it bloody awful hence the ignorance is bliss comment.

The only reason I said i wouldn't post anymore was, all that I really had to say was I didn't wanna hear all of this sort of stuff out & I couldn't see the discussion going any further than 2 sides saying my opinion is the right one ........... (when I knew I was right laugh.gif )

I'm surprised you took me seriously ohmy.gif ....Now about these des oconner records that i hear you've been covering up laugh.gif

Because it is a Northern Soul record, like hundreds that were played that are not very soulful but still were popular on the Northern scene.I own a mint Pye copy and always loved it, and there is still room for the odd nostalgia tracks like this to get played, usually the punters love to hear them

EXACTLY... glad someone has a brain !!

Oh dear have i got under your lily white Pommy skin YET again Ken ?? You defo need to get some quality sleep cos your getting ( or have you alway's been ) very negative. We really must stop meeting like this.Crikey talk about putting the cat among the pigeons. I merely asked if the record had been overlooked, NOT to start world war 3 over whether it was liked or approved of. And who's to say any of you are the world's authority on soul music. I have certainly never regarded myself as any sort of expert, just someone who is enthusiastic about the scene as a WHOLE and who IS prepared to move forward. Some of you need to get a life for gawds sake. Snow for brains !!!!!!! certainly comes to mind. Look out ! I have my gloves ready to put on.

Errr - don't you mean "Be my baby"? - Or did they actually cover "You baby"

I've got "Be my baby" by the Ronnettes on London but can't say I'm aware of "You baby"unsure.gif

they definately covered "you baby" i have a london demo - would scan it but i'm sure - if i can find it - it has a blank label - ie london records etcetc, but no artist and title -

Do some of you people ever read a thread?

I've said this at least twice now -

THE RONETTES IS THE ORIGINAL OF ' YOU BABY'!!!!!

...as I said last time I drew this to everyone's attention, Phil Spector wrote it with Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil. Big clue there, in that the Ronettes were on Spector's label Philles...

Can I also just reiterate that a 'cover' is only a 'cover' if it comes out in direct competition to an original. If it doesn't, it's a revival. As far as I am aware, no other versions of "You Baby" came out in direct competition to the Ronettes, therefore they are all revivals.

See you back here in about 10 postings time to repeat this info, no doubt...

I was very fortunate to recently acquire a Casino Classics test press of Jackie Trent, you baby from John Manship's auction. He described it as being a one off and from what i can make out it was a record that Dave Macaleer who in the early 70's ran the Pye record company and subsequently Casino Classics was going to release but it did'nt happen. The vinyl as very heavy and is about twice the thickness of a standard disc. The label is hand written and has the night owl logo with 'September release' written across the top. It has just a few light scratches but play's really well and sounds fantastic. Was this overlooked by the Northern Soul scene back then ?? It's a thumping dancer and just perfect for today's scene. I would appreciate anyone shedding any light on this song please. Obviously we all know that Jackie Trent was a white female artist that sang mainstream songs way back in the 60's and probably before then but i don't recall her ever having a northern style hit... is this it ?? I intend to play the record while at Prestatyn in the U.K. in March. Thanks for looking, Tony OZ.

Think it's a great tune but not sure I'd play it out (a recently departed mate of mine was a friend and neighbour of Ms Trent a few years back, in Majorca I think). Got a nice UK White Demo on PYE. One of those crystal clear recordings that came out of PYE's Oxford Street studios in the mid-60s a la Pet Clarke (although Jackie's vocal is certainly more soulful than the rather plumby sounding Petula ever was). Husband Tony Hatch wrote it with her I think, as he did a lot of stuff for Pet and others ("Call me") etc.

And wrote the neighbours theme toon.

Best record i like by her is her version of the Tim Rose number "morning dew"
