I'm constantly wading through stuff and every so often I get a great surprise when I re-listen to an old record that I'd either forgotten about or just ignored first time around. A few years ago I bumped into this one again - I probably hadn't heard it since 1973.

Completely blew me away, like I'd heard it only for the first time!

I just don't get it. The record has absolutely everything, fantastic vocalist, brfilliant Northern production and a song to die for. It's even got a perfect singalong chorus which peaks with the words, "Do It With Soul" for god's sake! An absolute loud, proud 100% Northern monster. That never was.

How did it get away? Why wasn't it huge?

Why didn't I play it???? :hatsoff2:

"Do It With Soul" - Aldora Britton

I have a few like this, but I thought it may be a nice idea to throw it open. What hidden gems do you have that you just love and would like to hear at a venue? How many times have you said, "if I was a DJ I'd bloody play this"!

Whack up the ones you feel really passionate about. Just imagine that you have a massive audience in front of you who are all moaning about too many oldies, not enough different tunes etc and generally looking for inspiration.

What gem would YOU pull out that that would blow 'em away?

Let's hear 'em!

Ian D

Ah THE CASANOVA TWO,

One of my all time faves this.

Seem to remember it being covered up by Colin Curtis as the CASINO BROTHERS .

Also the JIVE FIVE - YOU'RE A PUZZLE was a Searling spin at VA-VA's in 73 if my memory serves me correctly.

Brilliant thread this Ian.

CHRIS BROOKE

Glad ya like it Chris. :(

In fact your avatar name just reminded me of this gem......what a stormer this is! Everything but the kitchen sink on this one LOL.......

Ian D

There are both dodgy black and white and orange and black Casanova Two. In the 70,s every soul pack had either one in, stand them next to the genuine Demo and issue and they stand out a mile, the typeset is aweful on them and they just look crap.

Am aware of the bootleg WD look-a-likes...didn't realise there were also orange stock look-a-likes? The original WDs also have sub-standard quality print, but the vinyl is stamped.

I'm also rather partial to their other track on Early Bird, 'Maybe They're Right'...not obvious NS, but a powerhouse, tumbling Soulful delivery that will appeal to others I'm certain (WDs and orange stockers).

:(

Wow. Fascinating. I don't think I've ever heard this before!

Totally, totally different but what a wonderful version.

"We've Got To Keep On" - Freddie Hughes

I prefer the Casonava Two version 'cos I love the interplay between the vocalists and the complete over-the-topness of it all.

By the way, who is the other vocalist in the Casanova Two?

He must have been great to duel Freddie like that!

Can't really see the point of editing all the You Tube clips and replacing 'em with Refo clips Chalky.

The reason I whack You Tube clips up there is it's easier! One click and you hear the track immediately plus get to see the label in most instances. Plus you could be scrolling down and see a label that looks interesting and want to hear it, whereas with Refo you don't get any interesting visuals and you have to wait for the player to load. It takes a lot of the fun out of it.

I've nothing against Refo apart from the fact it's a bit clumsy compared to You Tube. Does it really make a huge amount of difference which facility one uses?

Here's another beauty which should be huge.

I've only played this out once in my life and that was this year in the early summer at a London Northern gig.

Result: instant floorfiller and great vibe! The kind of record you want to hear to get you in the swing of things .

A feel-good singalong anthem by a Northern Soul heroine which feels like a breath of fresh air. What's not to like?

Ruby Andrews "I Got A Bone To Pick With You"

Ian D

Always thought this would be good too Ian ,

but i think it spoils itself about 1min 50 seconds when it decides to take a time out from that "feel-good" singalong floorfiller

Suppose you could fade it out but maybe it'd be a bit short eh

Never been a problem for me Nev. I think it works as a nice wind-down actually.

Besides, with a dance-floor of 40 plusers you have to give 'em time to get their breath back!

Ian D

I found this in L.A. in 1976 and managed to keep it until the late 80's when Sam prised it out of my hands. It was a little too messy for tastes in the 70's and I don't know if it ever took off anywhere but it should have 'cos it's just such an atmospheric record by one of the all-time greats. Lovely record!

I bought this off Soul Bowl for £3 during the early 80's Ian , after reading your rave review on your sales booklet .......think it now resides at Ted Massey towers .....Cheers ,Eddie

It got played a few times at Wigan in the summer of 74.

I picked up a copy at the time and started playing it at the Accy Legion.

I don't recall hearing it anyway else, I always assumed it was played elsewhere.

Hi Ian,

I was simply pointing out that the clips are available via this site and are not as clumsy as you might think, I edited the three or four posts in about two minutes. The live search really is pretty quick, quicker than you tube for me with a slow internet connection at home it is forever stalling whereas refosoul is far quicker.

Plus the fact that members have taken a lot of time to build up the refosoul library.

You can embed the track via the link on the refosoul player and share it with twitter, Facebook etc. Many of the clips have scans so you often have something pretty to look at too biggrin.gif You tube is really no different content wise, simply a track with a scan or two on the vast majority.

By all means use youtube clips but please try and have a go with refosoul as well.

Actually I have on previous parts of this thread Chalky. I'm pleased to say I have now conquered my aversion to Refosoul, even though it feels slightly like it was designed by a clod in the mid 90's (which is probably closer to the truth than anyone realises). :)

It still hasn't got "Beautiful Thing" by Ralphie D on 20th Century in but there again neither has that friggin' You Tube...........:P

Somebody put Ralphie D up and put me out of my misery willya...........

Merely the power of positive passion for a tune Eddie! Good tip ay?

Did I ever congratulate you on your excellent taste old bean? :)

Two more for contention - can't post scans or clips as I'm at work so if someone else can...

Barbara Lewis - I'll make him love me (Atlantic)...close your eyes and you're back in that era when a number of tunes seemed to appeal to the girls on the dancefloor, and this would/should/could have fitted in beautifully. A lovely floater, this might not be quite right for today's scene but I love it. Can just imagine someone spinning this at Yate back in '78 and packing the floor.

KoKo Taylor - Fire (Checker)...the other end of the spectrum, I can only think that the fact that it's a cheapie has stopped this being a monster, it's got everything. Frantic, uptempo, rasping vocals, drum rolls, breaks, manic sax break - what more could a stomper ask for? If you don't know this, search it out before you're too old to spin to it!

Really enjoyed listening to this again, first heard it on a tape from Andy Rix.

Blue Eyed I know but this is certainly a mover.

The flip is their version of Love's Gone Bad, pure garage but a thumping version. I like both sides. thumbsup.gif

Can't ANYONE post that Ralphie D "Beautiful Thing" track on Refosoul please? thumbup.gif

I can't find it on Manship's site so can't even re-hear a snippit but I really wanted to hear the whole record again anyway. The intro alone was enough to blow me away but I've got a hankering to hear the whole record now. I seem to remember it was dead short - around 2 minutes or thereabouts. Maybe someone can confirm?

Cheers in advance to anyone who can put me out of my misery LOL.....

Killer Johnny! Many thanks mate. thumbup.gif

The fact that I remembered the record after some 35 years even though I've never actually owned it in any form speaks volumes. Ever since I remembered it as a result of this thread I haven't been able to stop singing it. It's already an anthem in my head LOL......:hatsoff2:

Finally after 35 years I get to hear the song again and it's every bit as good as I remembered. Years and years of recreational abuse didn't diminish the memory of this one! What a f*ckin' TUNE! Even though the clip is quite muffled you should get the general idea. Proper Northern Soul full of hooks and a pure belter. I'd play it in a second.....

Many thanks to Johnny for putting the clip up. Here it is folks.....enjoy!

. It was around 1979 - 82 that Terry Callier - Look at me now was played at nigh on every All-Dayer at Tiffany's in Newcastle-Under-Lyme. Which could indicate that the benefitiary of the sale may have been Soul Sam or Colin Curtis.

Actually I just remembered that I bought my copy when Levine sold up his first collection circa '79. Pat Brady was with me and he got "Strange Change" - Herb Ward at the same time.
