The point I am trying to make is that you never hear people describe certain songs linked to venues of today. Can anyone explain why this doesnt happen anymore? Is this because the big dj's play everywhere these days rather than be loyal to fewer venues? Are the big DJ's playing the same records?

I would like to know if anyone can tell me which records make you want to say "this is a big Lifeline tune" or "this reminds me of the Wilton"

I think the closest we get to exclusivity is thru certain dj's who have 'big' one-offs etc. You know you are going to hear certain songs played by the likes of Butch that you aren't going to hear anywhere else.

To put it another way...which songs remind you of your favourite current venue?

It is something that has happened, and until it is pointed out, you dont even realise.

I associate Margaret Little with Soul Sam. No venue, just the DJ.

But I associate Pyramid with Stafford. No DJ just the venue.

And I associate Neal Brown - If by chance with Soul Source, because before I met Dan he recommended it on here. And what a great rec it was

The disco at The Palace Hotel, Rhyl,The Orbit, in the early to mid 70s has to be Joy Love Joy "In Orbit", bit obvious but they were good times

I think because all DJ's DJ all over the place its pretty hard to associate a tune with a club now days unlike in the past, all the bigger DJ's on the scene now all DJ at all of the bigger clubs

"A Way To Love You" Shades Of Blue will always be associted with the Wilton to me, simply because I don't recall ever hearing it anywhere else.

Think again Mercury Personally associate this record with Cleethorpes and 100 Club as it was the first places I heard it...long before Lifeline. But it was played at the time anywhere Butch djed so no real association with a club if you know what I mean.....

Jackie WIlson - Nothing but Blue Skies and Exodus are always the last two records played at BSSC in Hatfield, but as was said earlier it tends to be more the DJs that records are synonimous with now rather than the venue

I tend to assosiate sounds with DJ's these days rather than venues. Not sure if its because I have access to more venues these days or if times have just changed.

Can't think of particular examples at the moment but there are tunes I associate with venues - maybe more smaller local ones, but some bigger ones too - probably because that's where I heard them played first or most often by the residents at these clubs. Suppose most things have been played somewhere else before so there is less of it these days, but will be interesting to see if we look back in 10-20 years time and talk about 'Lifeline'/'Soultown'/'Orwell'/wherever sounds...

Sorry Shane still thinking of your original question aout why sounds now dont get associated with venues (partly coz I never go out enough to know what sounds are played now ) but its question that interests me reading things on here.

A lot of the Wigan/Stafford/Mecca type association I think is because in general people went to the same venue week in week out, this allowed djs to persevere with records etc so easier to break and also for people to associate with venue. Today it must be a nightmare, particularly with so many local dos going on, I assume different crowds go to many of these dos (with the exception of the few on here that seem to go everywhere )even Butch must have to vary his set slightly when playing different venues.

Think Dans points about familiarity are spot on also.

Really interesting topic, even if I have strayed a bit off current point.
