Dangerous Doo-Wop And Group Sound/early Soul..

Starting this topic because at our party out here in California we play a real mix of things from the 50's thru the 70's including the rare and the not so much as well as soul, funk, rockabilly, doowop, girl groups, etc etc. I know that many DooWop tunes have made it on to the floors around the world of soul dancing and I'm mostly wondering if the community here has any recommendations.

and of course I'm aware some aren't big fans of this sound so feel free to slagg as well ! :P

I also play a lot of girl groups, early 60s on. I also play slower and more midtempo early stuff (as opposed to the "popcorn" sounding stuff above) but less frequently.

Always loved group sounds and definitely partial to a bit of doo-wop too. These probably have a foot in both camps although more on the soul side in the main, definitely doff their caps to what went before though. So, off the top of my head (some on the 'rare' side and some not):

Empires - you're on top girl (Candi)

Untouchables - raisin' sugar cane (Madison)

Royal Robins - something about you sends me (TruGloTown)

Dem III - I got a woman (Jam-Cha)

Marlboros - so much a man can take (Justice LP I think, Carolinas?)

Five Du-Tones - sweet lips (One-Derful)

Chances - stranger I love you (Finch)

Fiats - speak words of love (Universal)

Can't do clips mate, sorry; you'll find the vast majority somewhere on the www I'm sure

From memory, Anglo American did a CD along the lines of Doo-Wop meets soul I'm pretty sure and that'd be worth a butcher's ...

Five Chances is one I play (off youtube) over and over again, and would definitely be happy to own but for now it seems a very distant grail. Gonna take a look through the tube for the others, thanks very much.

It's so lo-fi it's hard to listen to though (both sides). I managed to get that west coast distributors 45 too (which doesn't even sound like soul to me) but have never seen the tandells on Jam-Cha.

no, the baton master record is much later in the decade. it came right before the liberty records (which hit with "papa oom mow mow" and "the bird's the word")

the Tandells is a girl group. The Dem III has a really slow side "lonely guy" and an uptempo side "i got a woman". I like both sides but the "I got a woman" side is very messy. Supposedly Dem III are the same group as the Magicians, but I'm not sure.

I just love collecting doowop influenced soul / early soul and early group R&B, provides a whole other universe (at least for soulie ears) to go down in seeking tunes, just like those with the latin bug etc (another genre I love). Far too many good doowoppy things to mention but a quick couple of faves that come to mind (sorry at work, network doesnt let me put up youtube clips):

This is one of my favorite transitional records, which also happens to be Chicago. not northern though:

There are two versions of this released, the later vee jay version has a delay added so the end of every sentence echoes.

A little off topic, but I was looking at some labels recently and noticed that this arctic label (which is unrelated to the philly label) is the same new york label that derek martin on arctic is on and is the same label as the executive four on lu-bet

My partner at Oldies Night (out here in San Francisco) plays that Jarmels a lot, it's a great record to change pace. Very nice tracks here

I like the little d and the harlems a lot even though it's one of many early soul tracks that sound like "stand by me". I saw it on the original pre-josie label recently, I don't know if I've even seen that before. I don't know the other two tracks, will check them out. Thanks.
