i hear tell that a group of dealers give their opinions on the prices ,but some of the prices just dont make sense ,theyre too high or even too low depending on the titles rarity .they dont tie up with popsike sales prices ,so are they propping up the market and not telling it like it is ?

With the internet and other communication avenues opening up UK Dealers created these guides to try and stop UK buyers going directly to US dealers and either depending on your point of view get value for money or rip off those dealers directly. The UK dealers would rather control the prices globally by creating these books whose prices are shaded to their advantage. There's never been any independence in these books and never will be.

john manships guide is based on his data base. some would argue some prices are too high. but it is what john has sold it for. in the real world the rest of us prices would probably 2/3 of JM prices..also some are too low....this means john hasnt even had a copy in recent years..some records he hasnt had in stock since the the first book

I agree totaly, I met a chap at a carboot sale about 12 ysag ,cant remember his name, But he supplied record collector, with records for the scans etc, He also said he was a contributor to rare record price guide, a realy abrupt guy, never did like him. after looking in box that he had checked i found 2 m- whose little girl are you doth demos, i never told him at time, 6 days later at an auction at the back of a box of jim reeves etc i had seen a box of20 x tina britt real thing london label. after paying the £3.50 price including buyers premium i went to the box and touk out the box of tina britt,

He came over after he heard me say give the rest to your charity van man, I showed him my find and told him about the sunday find, His face was a picture after i told him values,If looks could kill eh?.

EBAY...lol..... but seriously if something went daft on ebay a few years ago it seemed that dictated the "going rate" regardless of rarity, usual price etc and ive seen dealers prices reflect such.....I wanted a jean terrell some years back it was up at £30 on a site so i enquired spoke to said person and they said theyd have to check it was still there and then said hasnt one just gone for £60 on ebay??, of course the tune wasnt "found" went back onto musicstack a few weeks later and.....Voila jean terrell is there for...£60 from same seller.

And as Dave Pinches pointed out JM goes on his sell through, but i must add John is an honest seller and dave pinches and I know that from my personal experience on a specific tune and I'll always trust him, so sometimes i'll pay a tad more for the fact its Honest john.

Like on 'Flog It' value is affected by rarity, condition, and demand/fashion but in the end a record is worth what someone is willing to pay for it.

Said it many times, popsike probably the last place I go for a price. I use experience, actual lists, prices in boxes, dealer prices, prices on here then use auction prices. Auction prices could be driven by two lunatics who don't want to be beaten to a record and sense goes out of the window with some.

Many dealers, collectors etc have stopped using ebay for a few reasons.

The two main guides are done as Dave says on the dealers experience of buying and selling.

Hope Im not being facetious here,Chalky but prices in dealers' boxes is last thing I'd look at other than to compare prices if same 45s in different boxes.

Fact that there in a box, usually for some time, shows IMO probably too expensive.

Such a demand for Northern at right price they should sell almost immediately.

I don't put my sales stuff up anywhere other than Ebay.

It's an ever changing market and as much as the odd bit may go for 99p (never good), there's always two or three that sell that amaze me with what they bring.

We all keep our eye on stuff on there, so not much gets away cheap that's worth it - but there are many, many records that I see on here for £30 to £50 that struggle to reach a tenner in the real world.

Suppose it depends who is selling Rod I guess. Some don't have the records too long and turn stuff over, some like you say aresat the a long time. Some can afford to sit on a record (for want of a better expression) until they get what they think it is worth, some can't and have to shift them, obviously at a price lower than they think it is worth or would wish to sell at.

I use everything at my disposal but some more than others.

There are unsold records in every aspect of selling, lists, dealers and ebay.

I guess the way we buy records has changed dramatically in recent years with the advance of the WWW.

in the same vein Barry.....I have had a few bargains on here due to guys wanting a quick turnaround at not over the odds prices.

If you are vigilant....you will find a bargain, if you got money to burn and want it yesterday...then so be it, more the fool them I say.
