I think Gene McDaniels vocal on "Point of No Return" is better than Georgie's .... but I like the musical approach / arrangement of Georgie's track the better.

The backing on GMcD's version is much more poppy / gimmicky IMO. George does it more jazzy R&B style.

Walk With A Winner was a 'Sooty Spin' throughout the 90's.....and luv the tune and his voice still today. Georgie Fame.......from my perspective....just can't come near it!!x I Llike Georgie....but have never considered him 'competition' with any of them...or comparable! The Jools of his time!!!x Music tho'...'sound'...an individual taste!x I respect yours and appreciate the info for me to explore and say wot I say! the ska boys of jamaica did make the effort to write some original material although did they did make some bizarre copies of odd tunes ...when eric appeared on the Jools Holland show a few weeks back he was asked where he got his records from, and replied he had a merchant seaman neighbor who lived below who supplied him with imports 

Sooty, you'll see Emabassy's everywhere because this was Woolworth's own label, they covered every top 10 hit from the late 50's up until around 1965 I think.  Some people actually collect full runs of these!

 Huh, nothing that comes to mind. It sounds a little like "Nobody" by Three Dog Night but they are definitely different songs. I can be sure that Paul Revere and Raiders didn't have a hit with it. They did some remakes/covers of R&B songs but nothing that was a big hit. Their huge hit "Indian Reservation" was a remake of a record by x-Sorrows member Don Fardon (but written by John Loudermilk).

Not 60s, but I was driving on Friday and on the Pop Master quiz on Radio 2, they played Kylie singing Tears On My Pillow and asked who sang the original.

I said Johnny Nash, and was surprised to hear it was Little Anthony and the Imperials. i knew they did it but mistakenly thought they'd covered it

You're right, it had to be the US cover by Louis Jordan that Georgie was 'following' musically rather than the Gene McDaniels original / hit version.

...it's been mentioned above...Don Fardon.....back on 1974/5.....it was about the 8th 'Northern' record I heard in me mate Waynes bedroom! I remember it being played at the school Youth Club on a Friday night '75.....and I LOVED IT!! Still do! NEVER heard it played out anywhere since 1993....but have heard it on the radio a few times over the years! it sits proudly in me collection and i've put the Mr Custer song next to it as featured in the Best Boot Buys thread!!!!x

...i'm often surprised at Boot Sales as to how many 'covers' I come across by 60's bands on B sides etc! This one I found last year....I take them home to listen.....they either become frizbees...or stay in me box adjacent to the originals! Many of the above mentioned I have in my 60's collection and deserve a spot! This hasn't been mentioned........but it made the box......!x

I grew up listening to the crappy UK covers coz that's all the BBC would play, so I know what I'm talkin about.

The UK covers (99.9% of em at least) can't hold a candle to the originals ..... never have & never will do.
