Its funny how and what we remember and in what order/year. I would swear rhino wasn't played so early on, I remember Bubblegum, which is still a brilliant instrumental.......being played early on and I remember the 1st plays of Joe Hicks and Terrible Tom, I thought i`d died and gone to heaven.

I remember Thelma Houston's version of I aint going nowhere being played well before Juniors.(That`s another which doesn't get played out nowadays!)

Steve, I think Rhino was the second record ever played on the first night at Wigan!

I can even remember Russ on the mike after playing Dana Valery for the last time (until someone else played it a while later, as it just got pressed on Pussycat) "Anyone want a copy of this.....£7.00."

"And its 8 for Russell Steele!"

I had it all on tape and that one sticks in my mind. Apart from ive no idea what the Russell Steel track was.

I was going to put up an uncirculated Wigan tape from late 79 early 80, I'll pin it down later, just editing it and so far I've had to cut out over 30 minutes of absolute disco dross being played by Richard, sounds like one 12" after another, imagine being there having to listen to that.  I'll try and salvage the rest, I just heard John & The Weirdest so there is some salvation.

Detroit Sound was always far superior to the 4 Larks version.

And just for old times sake I bought a "Supertime" the other week. Im on at The Grand Clitheroe next month and we are doing a Casino set so thats in my playlist for then.

If I get anymore cold shivers down my back im going to have to put me coat on!

Intrigued by that statement,

does anybody know a Russ record that was truely his?

We used to go to Russ's market stall on a Saturday afternoon.  In mid 73 he played the Sherrys, and I'm sure at the time he claimed it was a one off.  One of his I think

I have a feeling The Torch already had The Sherrys.

There's some fantastic clapping on Get It Baby, Saxie Russell and Rhino, it really does give you goosepimples.  Whatever happened to clapping, died out in the 80's, I loved it when everyone knew how to do that clap on a particular beat as if it were done by telepathy.

completely right pete, folk were right in the groove back then, an innate appreciation, complimenting the effortless dancing...think now only the supremely busy all-nighters bear any semblence of that mannerism  and it has to be the right record...back then everything got the treatment.

All ways clap its the law      Richo
