Which Records Should Be Played Out To Break The 500 Mould

Just thinking what sounds would you play to spice up a set away from the norm.

My lad played TRAVELING MAN by JOE SIMON at Blackpool Tower in November on the Sunday,

When down a STORM. Lot of People didn't no it. Must be so many out there.

There are entire nights and niters all over the country breaking the top 500 mould that you could go to, without having to think how to spice up an oldies spot.

. Very good point Matt but not everyone can do niters, the idea was to see what people rate themselves i:e as not heard before or just not played for a long time and should be. when I've put alldayers on I'm always happy when a Dj puts a track I have to think about. I'm never to old to learn. Thanks mate Rod.

Personally, If all there was out there were the 500 nights I would've given up 30 years ago, the whole point of going out is to hear stuff I ain't heard, or forgotten.The beauty of soul is that you never stop being educated to new stuff or whats the point

I like this point as well! You must be about the same age as me too, your the same as me and probably take great delight in hearing something new to you. thanks again mate Rod.

Thers a vocal and an instrumental as a returner of just over a yeatr ago havent heard"Out", among other oldies (might be wrong ,they could be in the top 500!,havent read the book or list.Along with those two I can think of plenty more I havent heard when out and about since back however theres so many all "nighters"!(I am coming home at three or four in the morningers, that a fair few attenders mistake a nighter for?) on every week ,or so it seems,how could I possibly know everything that gets played pre 1981? and where.

 

I am just a punter who is not rich enough to come in and buy up a collection or two so the few records I buy tend to be things I like at the lower price end ,I still like to go to listen to and dance to the music, and am really pleased when I hear something new to my ears and whats left of my brain(ie the analytical side next to the right side that passes on that great musical experience  to the left for further rating and storing away )As a punter I  will be hoppy no doubt to hear a cart load of stuff that doesnt get played however I have another dilemma,what about the stuff that came out after the early eighties that of course is also in the post wigan for want of a better set of words,oldies list,not being around when some of these to me really good records were out and about then played out ,I hear them also for maybe the first time  and say to one or more of my mates "I love that sound",to hear the reply"Oh that is  well played out?,doesnt bother me I am quite happy to still say I like it!.

You're right Matt. In fact there's been nighters, Dayers, soul nights and weekenders over 3 decades which have broken the 500 mould. It's just that many choose to ignore this fact (not meaning the topic starter).

Rod, I'm not sure you understood my point. I meant if I wanted to hear new things, which I always do, I wouldn't go to Blackpool and wait for someone to slip an underplayed record into an oldies spot, I'd go to an upfront night where the underplayed is the norm.

 

For example, Top of the Stairs room at Gloucester on Saturday. :thumbsup:

I totally agree Rod, unfortunately there are so many places which won't mix it up so people like me go elsewhere. Anyway that's a different thread altogether.

there are places out there that play big oldies as filler records :thumbsup:

Loads of stuff in my number 3 box, but as at the moment i only get to dj at oldies nites most of boxes 1 & 2 are dedicated to this (although these change a lot most of boxes 1 & 2 can be found on this previous thread

Originaly a torch sound I do believe but may be ealier,,could well be Mkt harboro or Bletsoe. but played at wigan among the very many,many,other records like it.,by like it I mean from the same era,pre wigan.

Last time I heard it out at a niter was probably the old Middleton Civic.

 

Although I have played it out myself a couple of times since then.

You might be thinking of Nina Simone Be's that way sometimes - great dance record but not the same song .

Again I ask why is this not filling the floor at oldies night? Hardly unknown or left field I'd it, Classic Northern and i think it even came out on Grapevine didn't it?

I last heard it played by Kitch at the old bell lifeline weekender, sounded blinding.

I can give 50 lists like that Rod, there are tons and tons of tracks, to be honest I wonder why we have these discussions some times, if you want fresh music to play, if your a DJ and all that, its out there.... believe me, thousands of em...
