This track "I got it bad (and that ain't good)" was certainly played in the mid eighties at the Central Pier All-Nighter Morecambe and only available on the album from memory?

Hi. More likely to be 75/76. Only heard ANYCD at the Mecca around 73/74. Didnt get played by Searling until much later. Just saying.

You might be right about the year, I had stopped going to Wigan by '76 . It may not have been RS who played it, it might have been RW!!! but it was very early on in the evening, literally as they opened the doors. We would head straight for the balcony to get a spec and I think that was a time when the dj's would try new stuff out before the place filled up.

If Kev heard Joe Matthews, then he obviously heard it, but I would also have said it was much later, 75 at the earliest.  I think RS was the only one at Wigan who had Joe Matthews and I never heard him play it until 77!

I had a Joe Mathews from '75-'76. Can't remember if I played it @ Wigan or not.....

Thanks Ian, I wish I still had that cassette, I must have played it fifty times or more as they were some of my favourites, at that time.  In fact, I can remember the sequence vividly, the record after Joe Matthews was Teen Turbans - Need to be loved, another record I was desperate to own! Someone's gonna tell me next that wasn't played until 1978

 

Anyway, I know it was played at least once, the other two also went on to be big, so I just wondered if after I stopped going to Wigan did it take off and it would appear not, but got played at other venues in the 80's

Remember Richard playing it at WC…..it was big for him. Probably don't hear it because not too many have it……I have been playing the equally good B side recently though in the rare rooms…..

Yes, the flip is an awesome track but the vocals could have been more stronger & clearer

Special place in my heart for Joe Matthews, its been my favourite NS sound since I first heard it, but as I went to both the Highland Room and WC at the time, I can't remember where I heard it first, would have been around 75/76, but I always associate it with RS. I had it from about 76 on a white Koolkat boot and it was a darn good quality boot at that. I saw the label on the one RS was playing in the main room and it was red, so decided to felt tip mine in red. I was doing a warm-up spot in Mr M's, the early session before the 'nighter and RS spotted it, propped up for playing in my 50 box, he was straight up on stage, grabbed it, looked carefully and said " You ****, you had me going there !"  So it must have been a bit rare ! Baby Washington I remember RS playing, on and off at Wigan, I liked it, but it didn't really break. He played it occasionally on his Cellar full of Soul radio show and I also remember him playing it at an evening do, somewhere north east of Lancaster in 84.

definitely played early 80s as well, can't remember who or where and completely forgot about it until now. Thanks for the reminder, sounds spot on for now.

They were playing most all the popular records other venues were playing!

Just beause a record is poor in your opinion doesn't make it so too others, there are loads of non ( Northern Scene) hits from the 70's which have found a new lease of life in the interim, as people's taste improved amongst other factors.Actually (You Better) Check Yourself is the offical A-side on this release. Why don't you put on one of your podcasts and let the great unwashed decide ?

That's my point there's still decent records turning up but you really have to go more to hear 'em.

To me Joe Mathews is a totally played out oldie, great Detriot double sider but played out. Now his vastly underated New Moon 45 "Little Angel" is a perfect crossover tune.

I can understand why you, personally, would get fed up with hearing Joe Matthews on a weekly basis but it'd be a bit of a treat for me, I haven't heard it played out for 38 years

Mick Smith plays ANYCD, at least he did the last time I was at the 100 Club, December 2006. Tremendous record. 

Love that Joe Matthews A side. Beyond my means though, sadly.
