At a nighter is it normal / acceptable to haggle over prices with a (record) dealer ?

Is it acceptable to offer records in part ex or to knock the price down ?

If a record in a box is not priced, does this mean its "big money", sold or not for sale ?

Does anyone out there collect bootlegs ? (I know some of these are quite big money now)

All I can suggest is, buy what you like at the price you are willing to pay for it. Other than that sorry but I'm not much use.

If you know what tracks you want, make a list, then try getting prices of dealers and ebay, as sometimes can be quite a remarkable price difference between sellers.

Depends on the person selling the record - dealers like Henry Atkinson probably wouldn't budge an inch - others may knock up to 20% off - but if you don't ask you don't get

Only if the dealer/seller is interested in your 45s - most will take trades but it will always go in their favour

Not necessarily - usually means dealer is too lazy to price it up

Grind the buggers to the floor and get yourself a bargin ..........exept off me of course you will always find my prices fair

as someone said earlier, do your homework - a record is only worth what you are prepared to pay for it

always haggle, if the dealer don't drop the price for you, get a pretty girl to ask for the same record......

and PM me your wants list - I've got a box of cheap records that I'm trying to get rid of

Remember, it's all about supply and demand. Quite a few tunes that are readily available have gone for silly money over the last couple of years, simply because a sound has become popular. (Sister James, Integrity?)

Buying from a dealer has a lot of advantages (you can see, feel and maybe hear the record) but they're only one source. At the end of the day you're a customer and have to weigh these advantages over other sources that might be cheaper. If you're buying at a venue have a wants list and research the prices before you go. A dealer wants to sell and you want to buy, but if his valuation doesn't match yours, walk away, there's always another copy somewhere else. Unless you're planning to DJ, buy what you like and want, not necessarily what's big at the time.

Think about buying albums. OK most people don't find them as sexy as 45s but it's a challenge, researching and tracking them down. You can often own some pretty expensive tunes for a fraction of the price. They a b*gger to carry around though

My two Golden Rules.

Have an iron will - stick to your budget and wants list.

And

Never buy anything after more than 3 pints

If you want to buy singles don't just stick to buying at nighters. Get yourself on mailing lists, JM, Anglo American and Pete Smith are probably the best to start with. Read every list religously, this way you will get familiarised with records and their prices. Buy a price guide or 2 and make sure you don't spend more than 80% of what a record is allegedly worth. Draw up a list of your wants and spend every night and all weekend trawling through ebay. Ignore your family. Stop socialising with your friends. Buy value foods at supermarkets to realise more capital. And most importantly NEVER look at a bank statement.

For me personally I would rather own four £50 records that I want rather than one £200 record that I want.

I think haggling is acceptable, if I take some records to a do then I'm always happy to argue prices with people. Trades sometimes but depends on what you have that you want to trade. There are loads of top quality cheapies out there to start your collecting off....buy stuff that you like and will play.

I've always likened the record bars of all-nighters to a morrocan souk in reverse. you might like to offer the dealer in question a cup of tea, ask him questions about his family, if he has any attractive sisters, how much he earns from his daytime job (if applicable), if he lives in a flat or a house etc, etc, all this pleasant chit-chat can smooth the way for the moment when you go for the jugular, pitching in a ridiculous offer & waiting earnestly for his/her reaction. he or she could just as easily tell you to f**** off & then promptly warn other sellers that there's a nutter on the loose. it always worked with me though, being able to shave a pound or two off the asking price in the process.

seriously speaking, as others have said, get yourself on some mailing lists: pete smith, joe dunlop, rob messer, adey pierce, andy dyson are just a few that I'm signed up to. all offer great records at very fair prices. pat brady & john manship are also great sources, with soundclips, friendly communication & spot-on grading. I find these last two invaluable for searching out stuff previously unknown to me. finally, the financial committment required. my three credit cards are up to the hilt, but I just can't resist. online buying with ebay is also tremendously habit forming, watching the progress of auctions, the sniping, the buzz from winning stuff, the feedback scores etc, etc...

this happens to be my 3rd collecting cycle since I got into the music in the mid 70's & I'm enjoying it just as much as I did back then. good hunting!!

I wouldn't bother about making a "tit" of yourself. I've been collecting years and I do it on a regular basis. It is a constant learning process.

My tip is to stick to Mintish originals,never ever buy as an investment,and as to specific query re. unpriced 45s I'd just walk away. Invariably when you ask price they're OTT.Oh, and get on Ebay

Welcome to the "dark side".

Here's my tips Mate:

1. Buy as many as you can as often as you can. Nothing worse than having 50 records in a box that holds 200.

2. Register your kidney with a South American Organ Donor charity. When you're really on your uppers and that Poets JV Copy in MINT does appear you'll get a fair sized wad of cash for a kidney (You can only pull this trick once though, unfortunately)

3. Never...and I mean NEVER take your records home in the sleeve you bought it in. (inevitably the seller will have scrawled the price all over the sleeve, and your other half will not be conned by your pathetic explanations of how you didn't pay that much)

4. If you smoke, drink, drive a car, live in house, go to football matches, enjoy the odd family holiday, then these activities are to cease and desist immediately. These activities are not conducive to record collecting. In fact they just get in the way.

5. Finally.....Only collect records you really like, enjoy your records and the collecting of 'em. Otherwise it's all a bit pointless innit?

They haven't got upset with me yet, or at least they haven't said they have.

In all seriousness though, they send the lists by email so it doesn't cost them any extra to send 200 than it would to send 1. Also Sean Chapman now does a list by email. Also getting lists by email when you get to see something that you don't know, you can look up stuff on Soul Club or Manships site for soundclips.

They dont give a monkeys as long as their lists reach as many people as possible. Once you are on a few you might even find you start receiving unsolicited lists from other dealers. There is an art to buying records so if you are on line at work get your lists sent there so you can respond immediatley. I rang Anglo American about a single last week, 15 minutes after I got the list and it had already gone. Some dealers such as Rob Messer send their lists outside of office hours so get these sent to your home address.

One is for USA released records and the other for UK released records. He's bringing out a new updated one for USA releases in the next month or so, could be worth waiting for the new one before you spend your cash.

Or get hold of the second one and use that as your guide rather than paying over the odds

Off topic post, How many dealers do you think will be straight on the case with increased prices when it gets realesed, im not even going to bother with this new guide, seems a waste of time to me.

Well at the risk of making a tit of myself, yes it's 2pm Tuesday March 11 1973.

Just buy what you like, not what someone else likes or tells you is "proper" Northern or is the "new" Northern, and after a while you will see what style particularly appeals to you. I find that financial limitations restrict me to a favourite genre.

1) "Mint unplayed" record grading, are you sure ? How does the seller know its never been played ? (unless they've owned it from new !)

2) If bootlegging records is viewed dimly, why is it acceptable to pop the middle out of original records ? Thought both of these things would "reduce" the originals value ? Or have I yet again missed the point ?!!!

1) Personally I very rarely describe things as mint unplayedbecause yo just can't be sure. Having said that I have piles of 45s that have come from old record shops or closed down distributors etc...they've never been sold to the 'public'. Quite often see these described as 'New old stock'.

2) It's not acceptable! Yes it does reduce the value....used to be done to fit records into jukeboxes or in some cases to make them look like US imports.

to start collecting records is bad because once you start you can't stop. despite i don't collect much Northern as i know my dad does i still have a few and compiled a list of tunes i want me and my dad to own however some are very rare and believe would be non existence on a vinyl record.
