The first time I ventured North of Birmingham, to Hinckley (OK may not be geographically North but it is further away from Gloucester), one of my abiding memories was the clapping to interplay was different to our local do's. We'd clap twice in parts where this new crowd clapped once.

I love the clapping and am sure it is one of the main reasons I initially fell in love with Northern Soul, but have always preferred the tunes where there is a one off almighty great clap, each break, a la Duke Browner, than the rabble type clapping to Right Track. The only time I like the rhythmic clapping is where a verse or chorus changes the beat of a record, like Cecil Washington - I dont like to lose

As its bad enough to get on the floor at my age now I prefer records with a short clap break. So my vote goes to Art Freeman 'Slipping Around'. Back to youth club days I remember when Funky Street Arthur Conley used to be played and hands were red raw afterwards.

I'm surprised at the sound,not brilliant, but not too bad considering I recorded it on an old philips mono tape recorder with no dedicated microphone. This Magix cleaning software helps though.

Thought the clapping to the weather forecast scene was over when Russell Grant finished presenting, but those Kentucky fried Clapping adds bought a lot of us out of the woodwork, although I still clap in the old style and get criticised by the 'new breed', who say its old hat and naff, and tapping your toes or humming is the new clapping

the first time i went to prestatyn and walked in to the main ballroom mid dance contest - f*** me that was amazing! I think that was the nail in the coffin for a northen soul obsession!

Also at mod doo's when Of Hopes Dreams And Tombstones was played "123!" Though that was more of a chant than a clap.............
