Martha Star - Love Is The Only Solution / I'm Lonely - Thelma 112

Martha Star

Love Is The Only Solution / I'm Lonely - Thelma

Thelma 112: 112 (45s)

The Thelma label is considered by many (including me) as one of the catalysts for the addictive rare-Soul curiosity we all suffer from. As young-gun Soul enthusiast this label would crop up in sales boxes, sales lists and conversations during the very early 70's, begging the question why such a consistently impressive label with not a bad record among it's catalog would have had so few releases... most of my teenage years were spent accumulating as many Emanuel Lasky 45's I could find. I just loved his voice, then I discovered Billy Kennedy, then Martha Star.. I knew nothing about the label but it's stark black & silver simplicity really appealed to me...most of my acquisitions came from the legendary Brain 45 Phillips.. former "Twisted Wheel" DJ would mail highly anticipated sales lists of USA rarities.. it was an education to read and even more exciting buying "blind" on the word of his one line comments, I was rarely disappointed. One day I bought what would turn out to be Thelma's most coveted 45, not then it was virtually unknown but today it certainly is Thelma's "Top-Dog"

The pre-Wigan era the search for stompers was my imperative "Love Is The Only Solution" ticked all the boxes for me. A crowded instrumental intro, brandishing honkin'-horns, Piano whacks, pumping sax and a femme-vocal dripping with attitude, strutting through that forest of instruments scything down all before her, oh that instrumental break, the away it lifts up and up to a crescendo.. Brilliant Detroit.. and I hadn't even noticed the covert girl-chorus in the background that today I think is a masterstroke...allowing Martha's vocal the rip it up.

It was for a 19 year old exactly what the Doctor ordered, to drive me on towards another Brian recommended 45...

Oh how foolish is youth.. I don't think I even gave the flipside a brief listen.. it was not until the 80's that it hit me, the very greatest Thelma recording was on the flipside.. "I'm Lonely" is saturated in everything Detroit Soul was in the mid-60's. Vibes, squealing girls, driving mid tempo beat and Martha's rich purring, pouring out imploring lyrics of loneliness, I just drowned in it's glorious despair..

Two killer tunes on one disc, with "I'm Lonely" out stripping most any girl tune you care to throw at me, for truly effective Northern Soul.. it shimmers alone it it's brilliance..

Cornell Gunter - Love In My Heart - Together

Cornell Gunter

Love In My Heart / Down In Mexico

Together: 101 (45s)

Irresistible and seriously elusive 1975 Los Angeles Northern Soul Crossover, seldom seen for sale, especially in the eye-popping condition.

This 45 is essentially a vocal-group recording, although the label does not credit any group; Cornell's whole career was hinged by close involvement with the vocal-group scene. The Platters, The Coasters, The Flairs were all drop-offs along the way, during his varied near 4 decade career. Going solo he incorporated his own groups The Ermines, The Cornells etc. so it is not surprising this 1975 D.I.Y. recording written and produced by him, is decorated by a full blown vocal group chorus. But tat is only 1/2 the story as he ignores the "Disco" pressure the Soul makers were under at the time Cornell pulls in a mix of California Jazz instrumentation, a wealth of male vocal harmonies and a typically Californian wavy saxophone haunting the background..

The hybrid of California jazz fusion, Doo-Wop and Soul works in spectacular fashion, delivering Northern Soul Crossover dance at it's most dazzling..

What A Tune...I wish I still had this 45 in my DJ set. Now that the Sunday Soul Rendezvous's are now the first destination for many Soulie's, and this would be the most-perfect of drops...

Condition Report

an impeccable copy - other than occasional minuscule surface rub to the effective light blue label (see scan) this 45 is flawless. The vinyl, we are unable to locate even a blemish on the play surface, as close to a Manship Mint as we're ever likely to encounter, no sign of DJ encounters on the playback either (listen). The last copy we had of this title over 3 years ago was a disappointing copy with vinyl and labels flaws, and it flew out the building.

Jimmy and the Sun Dials - Where Did I Lose You / All About You - V-Tone Promo

Jimmy and the Sun Dials

Where Did I Lose You? / All About You

V-Tone : 503 (45s)

You are viewing one of the Rarest Of The Rare Northern Soul classic style dancers, it is possible to own. One of the most-wanted 45's on the planet for more reasons than one.

We know of only a mere 2 copies residing in the UK; the other one being a rather bland white label test press (the only other example we have ever sold) but that 45 had a horrid sound flaw 2/3rd of the way through. Which didn't deter the purchaser, as the rarity and sheer pumping power of the recording overrode the questionable sound quality. So at last with this promo copy being flawless, I can hear the full potency of this glorious slab of "foot-to-the-floor" Northern Soul.

As for the just as meager known USA residing copies, they are universally considered vocal group gold-dust. Rare in the extreme, a Doo-Wop trophy that hardly anyone owns. And even if they did, who would ever sell a flawless copy with the promo labels..

A two pronged "impossible" with both sides considered "Grails" within two of the world's most vital vinyl collecting scenes, presented here in enviable condition..

Record collecting does not get any more challenging or satisfying than this opportunity.

Irma Thomas - Time Is On My Side - UK Liberty EP PS

Irma Thomas

Time Is On My Side + I Need Your Love So Bad / Straight From The Heart + Without Love

Liberty: LEP 4035 (EP)

The seldom encountered and now iconic 1964 EMI tribute to the Queen Of New Orleans Soul. As the Crescent City songstress benefiting from H. B. Barnum's Los Angeles know-how for the Big City production that had been sweeping New York for several years previous. Aided by Norman "Cry Baby" Meade, Jerry Ragovoy's teammate on many occasions with Garnet Mimms and Jimmy Norman's lyrics; a masterpiece was crafted that summer's day in 1964 Underlined by the many, many artists who attempted to eclipse Irma's original version. Famously The Rolling Stones (no UK 45) the same year.

What a combination of the vocal-bounty Irma's mesmerizing vocal provides and H. B.'s penchant for the full orchestra treatment, and the writing skills of Mead & Norman with the weight of L.A. other seasoned producer Eddie Ray bringing togethe a mighty, mighty build of real Soul. Just listen to the blanket chorus that accompanies her on "Time Is On My Side". A thunderous tidal wave of vocals weave even more potency into the session. Not many recordings of the era could match this monumental recording, maybe Garnet Mimms's "Cry Baby" carries the same overwhelming characteristics of throwing everything the studio could muster at the recording.. Phil Spector was no doubt noting he was not the only kid on the block embracing a "Wall Of Sound" commitment.

Check out the impressive track listing, featuring Deep Soul laments, Beating heart-rendering Soul strollers all blessed with Irma's ease of vocal and poignant portrayal of the lyrics. Yes, a "Queen" at work...

1. Time Is On My Side
2. I Need Your Love So Bad
3. Straight From The Heart
4. Without Love

Erma Franklin - Whispers (Getting Louder) / I Get The Sweetest Feeling - Brunswick PROMO

Erma Franklin

Whispers (Getting Louder) / I Get The Sweetest Feeling

Brunswick: 755430 DJ (45s)

Take a piece of Aretha's baby sister, hear her in top-fidelity "stereo" as she rides a battering bass-guitar rhythm, delivering those sing-a-long Barbara Acklin lyrics in an unparalleled muscular delivery. Jackie Wilson's anthem slides up a notch and takes on a totally different character. Carl Davis & Sonny Sanders decision to match Erma's outrageous vocal power with an equally bludgeoning Bass guitar was a masterstroke indeed, allowing Erma's voice to attack the production without overwhelming the song.

The result for me, is a rare thing, that someone was able to elevate and already scintillating classic.

..and the recording booth boys were not leaving it there, they got Erma to simmer-down a tad, and pour out a delicious version of Jackie's signature tune.. with superior arrangement, a full orchestra in motion and Erma's vocal again sailing above the proceedings. This stereo production is breathtakingly crystal clear, every note, every squeal of emotion hits you square in the face... it's astounding clarity staying with you long after the record ends..

Of course this record is in perfect condition throughout.. it has to be to fully appreciate the sheer quality in depth of such a thoughtful production throws out at you.

Let Her Go .. do the right Thing
Let Her Go...Be a Friend...
Let Her GOOO, Let Her Go, You Just Got To Let Go..

These lines mean more to the disciples of The Torch, Blackpool Mecca, Wigan Casino than most Northern Soul records ever made. Go on tell me you've not sang it out loud as you danced...

Joe Philips - I Just Can't Help Thinking About You / Can't Help But To Love You - Omen PROMO

Joe Phillips

I Just Can't Help Thinking About You / Can't Help But To Love You

Omen: 6 DJ (45s)

Those of you who follow DJ play lists will have noticed this Stafford spin once again appearing on many respected DJ preferences. I notice Rob Gray, Matt Fox are just a few who are championing this 45. But not for the solid slab of pumping Northern Soul "Can't Help But To Love You" but for the gargantuan Big City Beater "I Just Can't Help Thinking About You" both of which carry the pedigree of Chester Pipkin writing credits.

The 52 year old Los Angeles creation borrows heavily from the Brill Building, New York but for me, surpasses even some of the very greatest stirrings that establishments gave birth to. I must admit once I heard Rob Gray spin it a couple of years back at a "Feed Your Soul" Newark I quickly pulled a copy from my dusty collection and added it to my set, so uncool I know...but Soul-induced spine-tingling is such a rare experience, I had to incorporate it into my hour..

This style is now sweeping the country, and long may it last, goose-pimple productions need to be inflicted upon the public, even though many may have been blinded by the stomping traditional Northern Soul offerings..

If the mighty strolling mood-changers are not for you, just flip it over.. power-pack Northern Soul awaits..

The best of both worlds.. and rarity assured as most all of the few copies that were briefly available through the 80's have long been press-ganged into collections..and this copy is flawless with no signs of an affair with a NS DJ

Condition Report

Vinyl is flawless, a squeaky clean Mint - throughout (listen to both songs). Lead side label sports two pink "X's" for Radio DJ direction, flipside label is Mint. (see scans). A finer copy would be challenging to acquire.

Martha And The Vandellas - Jimmy Mack / Third Finger Left Hand - UK Tamla Motown TMG 599 DEMO

Martha And The Vandellas

Jimmy Mack / Third Finger Left Hand

Tamla Motown: TMG 599 DJ (45s)

Even a cursory look at this Green & White beauty, instantly confirms this disc is the Rare March 1967 TMG Demo is the very FIRST PRESS of a much reissued two-headed Motown monster..

A Youth club sound that has endured now 5 decades of both sides filling floors and Motown nights across Britain, particularly a favourite with the ladies as one side portrays Boyfriend absence and longing, whilst the other side cover girl aspirations of wedlock. Two quintessential Holland-Dozier-Holland journeys into the psyche of the female..

Popularity, radio & Club Jocks over-exposure, took the shine of what are two great Motown movers. EMI recognizing the flipside was receiving as much attention as the A-side repromoted it in 1970 and again in 1972 all differing Green & White DEMO's changing the "A" side to suite.

Before you today is the real deal last of the 500 series DEMO that EMI never expected such healthy sales and long term impact for Martha & the girls..

As a DEMO TMG fans will need no confirmation that it's first clothes are by far it's rarest

Condition Report

Both Green & White promo labels are flawless, no writing, stains, tears, stickers or distracting marks in sight. Vinyl although played has NO hairlines, marks, blemishes what so very near Mint minus we've gone for a conservative EX+. A fabulous example of what is a legendary recording and so many euphoric recalls from your Soul Teen-hood.

Enchanting Enchanters - Boss Action / No One In This World - Ben Mo Keith

Enchanting Enchanters

Boss Action / No One In This World

Ben Mo Keith: 685 (45s)

Rare FIRST PRESS with staggered "Ben Mo Keith" logo, label address left hand side.

A hugely sought after 45 for more reasons than one; topside gives up uncompromising Street-Funk, drenched in blaring-brass, stabbing trumpets, strong bass guitar rhythm, very JB influenced Deep Funk dancer. The lead vocal chants, squeals, growls his way though the dance instruction and a tsunami of destructive horns roll out. Proper real-deal Funker, so hard to acquire as the original.. but there's more!

As so often happens after a arduous Funk session, the group snuggle into a a sulking Sweet Soul "Low-Rider" experience, this 45 is no exception. The rattling drummer is still, as are the horns, but this time icy-cool falsetto's take to the air. The silky smooth lead hitting some impressive notes, cradled by note holding harmony, before he stretches over the falsetto high-bar with razor-sharp delivery, ratcheting the song up yet another notch...awesome ballad.

Hard FUNK followed by super-sweet-Soul.. rare Soul 45 hunting don't get no more satisfying than adding records of the double-pleasing calibre to your collection..

Condition Report

Red label is typical Chicago press, at first looks to have a mild fade, but we all know neighborhood Chicago labels are always a little light on colour depth, there's no fade happened, this is the exact colour characteristic of the "ORIGINAL label. Vinyls are flawless, there is a light blemish on the run-in but from memory this is inherent to the masterplate,. not affecting play in any way. Play surface is a strong unblemished Mint minus.
