How about this for an idea. If in the UK they could set up a museum for Northern soul and motown. maybe the whole soul scene but would be nicer for the whole Northern soul where you can have records placed to be looked at, old posters, video clips and notes for when you round the venue where you can use buttons to access on the screens old video clips and maybe even statues of some of the soul legends. and all kinds of other things sounds like a good idea anyone agree.

Baz, take the Victoria and Albert Museum for instance....not only do they house old stuff - the largest arts & crafts museum in the world - they also have a very active policy of showcasing living designers as well

The idea of a museum is excellent - it's never too soon to start conserving and housing the memorabillia of the last 40 years. However, where would the funding come from?? Where would it be sited? Who would be appointed as curators? Security staff.....and, who would want to part with their beloved collections of vinyl or paper based ephemera I think a quick note to the National Lottery might do the trick.... Jo

Yes the idea of a memrobelia type museum is not bad, but there is far more important things the NL should be providing moneys for than sculptures and other things that 'look good'

Instead of having drawers full of diamonte heels, they could have iconic items like beer towels and old talcum powder tins, bits of the Wigan Casino dancefloor, a country and western record, old wrist bands from Whitby, a lock of Richard Searling's hair, Soul Sam's pension book, one of the worn out old speakers from the 100 Club (as soon has they've finsihed with them of course) and the left overs from one of Ian Levine's dinners. Oh hang on scrub the last one there are never any leftovers.

Look at the stick anyone who attempts to make a TV piece about the scene gets. Can you imagine Russ or Kev starting a museum about northern Soul? it wouls be horrific.

I did go to a show about Youth Culture, possibly at the V&A Jo. They had a Northern Soul section that I quite enjoyed. About a dozen of us went there together, and there were 12 different views, and eventually the content was ripped apart in the boozer afterwards. its a no win situation.

Imagine someone putting a display about how they reginited the interest in a dead scene by creating the music in a Northrn Soul stylie for an advertising campaign

Wasn't there a museum doing an exhibit somewhere, seem to remember something on here about it?

Also Shane, (I think) mentioned a museum in London, which catalogued a particular woman's experiences of the soul scene, sorry can't remember her name.

there's a Blues one which I went to the opening of. It contains or will contain the archives of Paul Oliver amongst other things, and it is fascinating. https://www.euroblues.org/archive.htm

Funding is a big issue but it is a Charity . Also is not necessarily restricted to Blues as it is known as The Archive of African American Music

Our scooter club had its 25th anniversarry do a couple of years back. And the organisers got about 300 pictures going back through the span of the club. it was superb. An absolute hit.

Maybe someone in the photography game (Elaine Constantine? for example) could put together an exhibition of photo's. I'd visit it I'm sure. I think it would be easier and less controversial than an attempt to have a museum exhibit.

Could take out much of the controversy if it were free to get in. I think the major problem would be that if someone (independent or otherwise) was trying to set it up, they'd naturally go to Russ, Kev and Ian Levine for advice, and that would obviously be a red rag to a bull for some. Whilst it would be fantastic to look back at memories, I think there should be a large section on whats happening nowadays but it shouldn't just dwell on huge venues such as Stoke, because IMO that would be misrepresentative.

The 100 club should have its own little corner for the stirling work it's done for the scene for over a quarter of a century

I alway thought this should happen, connected to a Venue where Today's scene could still thrive, It's got to be a winner.

Baz....I wasn't suggesting that anyone other than US - that's the Northern Soul Museum Consortium - should get the money...what a worthy cause we are - only joking Lottery money is supposed to be spent on things that will benifit the community...small or large. I agree with you wholeheartedly that there needs to be a major shake up in the way money is distributed....

I know this topic is pure fantasy but I was just trying to point out that unless you can find a sugar mummy or daddy who would fund the museum (not impossible - look at the Chlore Gallery @ the Tate, Sainsbury Wing @ the National Gallery and the Tsui Gallery @ the V&A) - you ain't going to get the money from anywhere else. Having worked at the V&A for 14 years, I saw the stupidity of funding....the Government took away £13,000,000 in their budget reforms in one year and continued to do so for years after. They then expected the museum to allow the public to enter the building for free..(all entry should be free in national galleries and museums but the Government should support the institutions) But then you're left with a problem - how do you keep the building in good order as well as the objects and staff....the objects, by the way, belong to you and your children and your childrens children .. when you start thinking about the minutiae, you start getting a headache

I know that if you wished - or anyone on this site or scene wished - to donate paper memorabillia or fashion items, then the V&A Prints & Drawings dept or Textiles and Dress would be very happy to discuss the donation of a gift. The items can be given on a loan basis or given to the museum without any conditions attached. That way, a proper collection rather than a whole museum could be built up and people could view the items...sheet music, stock bags, mailers, flyers (which are already being collected by P&D) posters etc etc....anyway - hope that helps. I agree, that is why I think that the Museum should be very much tied to a suitable Venue.

Dare I say It, Wigan Casino, had It still been around.

Somewhere still going strong, would be Ideal though.

Might even be Lottery / Self financing with the right thought behind It
