Just a question on how young you think people are getting on the scene or what is youngest you seen.

To my suprise when i went to city club friday a dj by the name of Little Miss soul rosie i thought a nickname then to my suprise it was an 11 year old girl. She was dancing even as good as i thought.

What is your thoughts on this i would say good but only one problem with the DJing can play the tunes but needs to be older so can hear what she says when talking as not all young people are good with words just yet. but in a few years time she will be djing more and getting better

My Daughter's a soul fan although I'll admit she's just as fanciful for the current stuff with awful sexual lyrics!!!! However, she loves the stuff I ram down her ears and is very excited about her first weekender - taking her to Prestatyn in March

Yep, I agree, it's an adult atmosphere and the only underage people who should (but shouldn't really) be there are the ones that can manage to sneak in like none of us ever did before we were 18, honest (note, I can honestly say I never sneaked into a soul do before I was 18.... )

No offence to anyone but I find the 'kids DJing' thing a bit gimmicky. The only comfort is that in a few years they'll probably rebel and be into something much more sensible

yes i was there that night, very sweet but lets hope she doesnt follow her fathers footsteps or should i say bootsteps regards his blatent lack of original vinyl, even playing cheap lp tracks photocopied

Why do you say that though? I know, when I was 13-14 I longed to be a patron at a proper soul night but the opportunity didn't present itself to me living in Bournemouth. Now that opportunities present themselves where under 18's are able to attend soul gigs why shouldn't they? Surely, it's an introduction into something they might just carry a torch for into the future, ensuring the longevity of a genre we're all so passionate about.

My kids are now 15 and 23, have traveled to soul events with me all their lives. From early Southports to Allniters in Scotland, we traveled as a family to just about everything. Has it damaged them, in their veiw, not mine, no. When it was their weekend to be with me, they and I wanted to be together and not with a baby sitter, so they came. Many people on the scene know Roxanne and Che well, they never played up or cramped anyones style. They saw the good and the bad around them first hand, and discussed it with me. Now in later life they have a much more level view of drugs, drink and everything else related to the club scene than many of their friends.

This is not saying that's how other should bring up their kids, but to say I see no problem having young kids around. I've traveled with them to big dance events and Glastonbury, where lots of people take their children and we've had great fun. But there again I've always been an old hippy. They still come from time to time with me and have great fun and now bring their friends as well.

I don't think it's bad for an under 16 year old kid to go to a soul night. I think that the point is that you talk him before and explain the hole thing, tell him what to do and what not to do.

I started going to reggae nights (the closest thing to soul nights in Mexico) when I was about 14 and I haven't got any problems

It's ok if you get kids that go and behave. not if you go and loads of kids running around. but as said for someone who goes and respects the music etc. only thing is they should end up djing when they are older and able to speak better so we can understand or else we won't know what a little kid says at time

Well, IMHO that's obvious.

I was refering to soulie kids not adult soulie's kids. Of course it's wrong to force a kid go to a soul night when he doesn't want to because he will not enjoy and won't let other people enjoy.

About the DJing, they don't have to speak at all, just borrow some dad's records and spin around

My 2 kid's aged 12 & 16 love all genres of soul music,and i've taken them to the odd soul night, and they loved it,and on some occasions being the first on the dance floor.It's like Dave said it's all about how you bring them up.I myself would like to see a lot more people bring there youngsters out now and again,but only if there are well behaved and of an age where they know how to respect other people and there surroundings.

Reminds me of a bizzare moment about 3 years ago at Whitby.

I was walking down to the Pavilion for the afternoon session, and spotted a few 'Soulies' in front of us with full battle dress on.

They walked past a group of about a half-dozen Goth-type teenagers gathered around a bench.

When the Soulies had walked passed, all the kids p!ssed themselves laughing and started pointing at them.

Must admit, my first thought was 'You cheeky little ba......'

But then the sense of irony became too strong and I started laughing too

There's always exceptions but in general kids don't end up being into what their parents are.

the venues shouldn't allow it , easy as that and that way selfish parents don't have the choice and it is selfish to subject your children to such a drug fuelled atmosphere

I would`nt hesitate taking my kids if i could and if they was up for it of course, the scene is one of the safest around and a lot more safer than my local that they enjoy going to with me on a saturday afternoon, my girls are 13 and 10 but sensible and respectful (until you get to know them), it has openend thier eyes to the real world that awaits them when the reach the age of clubbing and pubbing etc.

I would be responsible for them and would make sure they behaved and was respectful of what the event was about.

Only if it was a kid friendly event of course.

There was an article in last months 'On the Scene' about Alex 'the soul boy' Simms who is 14 years old. He says he is either out dancing or djing at the weekend or dancing all over England.

He is now running his own monthly venue playing 100 per cent vinyl at Royston Civic in Barnsley the third Friday of every month. Also on the line up as resident DJ is Little Miss Soul.

Well, I beg your pardon! I don't do drugs, never have never will... people don't stand/sit there snorting lines and injecting themselves so why would my Daughter know that they are?

I don't have to be selfish - my Husband doesn't do soul so he stays at home. My Daughter wants to come because 'she' wants to come. Nothing to do we me having to drag her along.

And schools get raided too! Education is the key... my Daughter knows how scared I am of drugs and I am scared which is why I wouldn't do them... I don't want to snort and die I'm more worried about my kids getting drunk every night rather than doing drugs. Drink being legal has far more implications. However, this isn't the discussion I know.

you should attend an all-nighter over here. you have to fight your way past the people queuing up to engage in bolivian marching powder intercourse. I don't believe for a minute it doesn't happen in the UK. perhaps the old british reserve at play? more discreet probably? drugs exist at venues today as much as they did in the past. even at evening sessions. I witnessed it this christmas. suffice it to say that they were my age or older, in fancy dress & jawing on the dancefloor periphery as if they'd just been beamed down from cleethorpes pier 1975. each to his own.
