I see JM has this on auction now and in his usual style recalls the discs first appearance on the northern scene at the Torch.

I'm pretty sure I was there that night or the next week and recall the impact that tune had on "our" group;  in awe of a great sound.

It was surely one of the first 70's sounds spun on the scene? having been released in 1970. And at the time was viewed almost in the same way as the Carstairs was a bit later in that it was obviously not a 60's sound. A few weeks later one of our lot, whose name sadly escapes me acquired a copy and it joined a select band of discs played on a car disc player this lad had. (you posted the discs into a slot like a CD player). And in our own sad version of a male vocal harmony group the front of the car would sing" Let her go" to be followed by the rear singing "you don't really love that girl" then front "Cant you see" then the back "she believes you do".

Such happy days and great memories.

I did not know such a thing existed...how cool was that! I did get a mint perception issue for 10 pence in junk shop around 78...as it was getting revived. Thanks for posting. Ed

Never owned one Julian but danced in a shop doorway on the tiled floor to a few records getting played on one in Widnes back in the 70,s

Never had one myself either. Spent 2 weeks in Torquay listening to one with Les Cokell, Tubby (RIP) and the Chorley gang. Happy days.

Crikey Julian there’s a name from the distant past . Tubby used to end up at Dave Scutt’s in Clarence Road in Southport along with Legs (both from Accrington as I recall) and many other folk after the Mecca and possibly the Torch if my memory serves me correctly. Hope you’re well Julian cheers Dave

Do you have to press that little eject button with your right foot which should be on the acclerator? That has to be the most mental musium piece i've seen for ages, absolute quality!

It was always my understanding that Graham Warr brought back from the USA the first copy amongst a stellar hit that included many first copies of records that are today considered classic northern rarities (Dena Barnes, Duke Browner etc) Graham himself told me he was the first to play it at the Catacombs. There was always a crossing over of tunes between the Torch and the Catacombs, so presumably it would have gone to the Torch very soon after (Max told me he regularly traded with Keith and Colin, which led to the cross pollination and helped tunes to reach a wider audience)

Hi Dave

Yes, the Accrington boys were around at the Torch and Mecca along with most of lancashire if I remember correctly!  Speak to Tom Handley from Southport on a regular basis.

I have an old address book. When I get time I'm going to list lots of names from back in the day to see if anyone knows where they are.

Cheers

Julian
