Apologies if done before, but why do so many records on black ABC, USA, have gold paint dabbed on them? I assume it was some kind of method to denote old stock and cut out sales tax? But where, by who, I've come across loads over the years.

    Relatively common thing to see on ABC and any ABC subsidiaries, gotta say tho I can't remember seeing the gold paint on any white demo, always and maybe solely applied to stock copies on these labels.

Likely at ABC these were pressed in such great quantities at one time (just like Verve and M-G-M at one time) that they had overstocks of their own (not even gone to the record store's racks) that at ABC (only seen ABC's & Co. with those)  instead of 'hole drill' them they marked them with such gold paint to offer them on 'sales' and never to be refunded if ever...

I think the question has been asked/responded to previously on SS. Worth doing again though; I only mention it as some previous contributors may not be around anymore, and a previous search might have more answers/theories.

I would have thought the drill hole was the easier way to identify deletions for no return , gold paint splodge on a record seems to be a laborious way to do it even on few records never mind thousands.
